Making inferences helps your student get more out of reading
By middle school, your child needs to “read between the lines.” This is
called making an inference – understanding an idea not printed in the text,
which you figure out by reading.
Make inferences by relating what you read to what you know:
 What’s different? Your child reads about a “timy dog” and he thinks
of dogs that aren’t tiny. Now he knows the dog probably isn’t a Great
Dane.
 Is it part of something? Your child reads that a little boy “woke up
thinking about icing,” and he thinks of cake icing. Now he knows it
could be the little boy’s birthday.
 Can I think of any characteristics? Your child reads that “the
bathroom looked as if a seal had bathed there,” and he remembers
that seals enjoy splashing. Now he knows the bathroom probably has
water all over it.

SAVE THE DATE! Middle School Program Overview is April 14th
Mount View Middle School invites parents of 5th grade students to attend an overview of
the middle school and G/T programs on Tuesday, April 14th at 7pm. Ms. Szalecki, the
6th grade counselor, will present information on the middle school courses and
schedule. Mrs. Mako, the G/T resource teacher, will discuss the G/T program and its
many offerings.
This overview is designed for parents only. Students will attend a visitation during the
school day on May 19th.
It's Time To Order YEARBOOKS!

additional charge for this convenience. No more lost checks in backpacks or lockers!
Just go to ybpay.lifetouch.com and enter 9869915 as the yearbook code. From
there, you'll be prompted to order your yearbook.
The yearbook costs $25 and is an 80 page hardback book in full color which will be
given to students during the last week of school. Please have all orders in by April
20th. If you have any questions about ordering a yearbook, please contact Ms. Stumpfl
at pamela_stumpfl@hcpss.org.
Project Linus
On Falcon Day, 3/27 one of the activities will be making fleece tied
blankets for Project Linus. Project Linus donates handmade blankets to
seriously ill children or children who've experienced a trauma of some kind.
We are asking for donations of fleece 1 1/2 yard (54 in. long x the width
off bolt). If you have any kind of fleece at home that is at least this size,
would you consider donating it? If you'd like to buy some, Jo Anne's has
kid themed fleece and usually has sales. Fleece from home needs to be
clean and free from smoke or pet hair. Straight from store is fine. Send
the fleece in to Mrs. Grimes Room 16 or Mrs. Merza room 13. Thanks for
your help with this worthwhile project that we think the kids will enjoy
doing.
Reading Events at Mount View--Three reading incentive programs are underway at Mount View. The Bowie Baysox are
offering a free student ticket to a baseball game in May to any student who reads 4 books
by the end of March. The Frederick Keys will give a free ticket to any student who reads 3
books by April 17th. Read Across Maryland and the "30/30 Challenge" started on March
1st. Students who pledge to read 30 minutes every day for the next 30 days (March 1March 30) will be entered to win a Kindle Fire or Amazon Gift Card. Contact Mrs. DeMoss,
or any ELA or II teacher for additional information.
Girls on the Run is a life-changing, experiential learning program for girls in third
through eighth grade. The programs combine training for a 3.1 mile running event with
self-esteem enhancing, uplifting workouts. The goals of the programs are to encourage
positive emotional, social, mental, spiritual and physical development. The lessons
promote self-challenge instead of competition; self-worth instead of societal worth; and
cooperation instead of rivalry. our mission is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and
confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.
The girls will meet after school twice a week for 10 weeks with the season ending
5K to be held on Saturday, May 30th., in Howard County, MD. Mount View Middle
School will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30-3:45 starting the week of
March 16th. To register your daughter, go to www.gotrcentralmd.org.
From the Health Room
Immunization Requirements for the 2015-2016
School Year
Students entering 7th Grade for the 2015-2016 school year are
required by the State of Maryland to have a meningitis vaccine and a Tdap vaccine by the
first day of school, August 24, 2015.
Please contact your child’s health care provider to obtain documentation of these vaccines
(if they have previously been administered) or to schedule an appointment to receive the
required vaccinations. Failure to provide proof of updated immunizations by the first day
of school next year could result in your child being excluded from school. Please turn in
the necessary documentation to the Health Room as soon as possible. Physician’s offices
may fax immunization documentation directly to the Health Room at
410-442-8050. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Health Room at
410-313-5550. Thank you!
March is National Nutrition Month. To help reinforce that half your plate should be fruits
and vegetables, students who are eating both a fruit and a vegetable during selected
lunches next week will get recognized and entered into a prize drawing for a fruit infusion
water bottle. So pack those fruits and veggies in your lunch!
G/T Summer Institutes
The G/T Summer Institutes for Talent Development course catalog is now available
online at http://www.hcpss.org/academics/gifted-and-talented/
Green Team Tip Of The Month: Recycle FILM (aka plastic bags)
Right Here At Mount View!
Did you know... Plastic bags of all kinds can be recycled in your county blue bins, BUT they
are easily contaminated with food products. It's better to take them back to the
grocery store, Walmart, or Target and put them in the collection bins located at
the store entrance. The bags collected at these spots become new materials like Trex
Decking. In fact, the front benches and planters at Mount View, as well as the picnic tables
in our outdoor classroom are all made from recycled plastic!
If getting to the store doesn't work for your family, Mount View's Green Team is happy to
help. Just drop off your bags at our RecyclEASE location outside of the FACS
classroom, right next to the Reuse-A-Shoe drop off.
FILM that can be recycled includes not just grocery store bags, but any stretchy thin plastic
like bread bags (just shake out the crumbs!) and newspaper bags.
Remember... the more you recycle the less you pay in taxes! We pay to have our
garbage hauled away to a landfill in Virginia (Alpha Ridge is just a convenience center) so
the more that you recycle, the less you throw away. The less you throw away, the less tax
you pay for garbage removal! Be Green To Save Green!
Calling all chefs! The Healthy Howard Recipe Contest submission deadline has been
extended to Monday, March 23rd. In case you haven’t heard, here’s how it works. Students
select a recipe for submission. All recipes must be prepared in 20 minutes or less (not
including pre-prep) and can be an original healthy creation or a healthier version of
traditionally unhealthy foods. Such as baked chicken versus fried chicken. No frying or
baking is allowed. Recipe’s cannot contain added shortening or butter and must contain at
least 3 vegetables. Your recipe must be able to be duplicated by the student if they become
finalist during the cook-off. Please see Mrs. Pearce during Falcon time if you want help
with your recipe. You can get full information about the contest by visiting
www.HealthyLittleCooks.com. You can also join the 7-Day Challenge on the website to help
get healthy recipe ideas. Recipe submission and parent consent forms are available from
Mrs. Pearce or Mrs. Mako. The Mt. View recipe finalist will win a fruit infusion water
bottle. If you’re chosen as a finalist for the cook-off scheduled on April 30th, you could win a
trophy, free 6 month subscription to YMCA, a free 6-month membership to the Healthy
Little Cooks Online Kids Club and a gift basket filled with fun cooking products.
…and Mount View's Green Team reminds you to BUY LOCAL when cooking to ensure
the best quality ingredients in your cooking! We are fortunate to have many local farms
and farmers' markets here in Howard County.
NOW is the time to sign up for a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) where you
buy fresh produce DIRECTLY from the farmer. Our closest farm is Breezy Willow, right
off of Route 99, which has pick up locations from the farm or from Miller Branch Library!
