S.C.A.P. School Council Meeting Minutes
Thursday May 21, 2015 – 6 pm
S.C.A.P.
SCHOOL COUNCIL MEMBERS PRESENT: Steve & Kirsty Sinclair, Anne Carradice, Carmela Klug,
Peter Fuhrer, Nancy Gamache, Lee-Anne Hines, Rebecca Barker (for last part of meeting)
REGRETS: Dan Mack, Terri Anne Lundgren, Lori Wilson
Absent: Sheila Helm, Kors Pater, Bonnie Wolsey
1. Call to order & prayer by Steve Sinclair
2. Review & approval of minutes from the previous meeting – moved by Carmela, seconded
by Nancy, passed
3. Agenda reviewed & approved with the following additions made:
a. Next Year’s elections to be added to New Business
4. Declaration of Conflict of Interest – None
5. Principal’s Report (Anne)
a. Changes for next school year:
i. Dianne Thompson will be elementary & high school principal at SCAP
ii. Anne Carradice will be going to Nestor Falls school
iii. Dan Mack is already at Crossroad
iv. Michelle Mosbeck has taken Dan’s place
b. Tell them from me survey (a survey that students completed during Education
week); Anne will email School Council members when she gets the summary
c. Flag – Pete Veldhuisen & Gerald Veldhuisen will be putting the flag pole in the
designated ‘green area’ in front of the school
d. Signage
i. Window covers have arrived
ii. All classrooms have signage with Room numbers/teachers’ names.
iii. School sign being developed by CPA decorating committee to reflect SCAP
philosophy
e. EQAO – cancelled for Grade 3 & 6 this year due to elementary teacher “work to
rule”.
f. Science night – several comments about this being a very positive event
g. Education week – a very good week; many volunteers/helpers – activities
included:
i. Grandparents Day
ii. Mini-Festival highlights of SCAP students who take music lessons
iii. School speeches
iv. Soccer tournament
v. Mental health presentation
vi. “Pitch In” – town clean up
vii. Healthy snacks provided to encourage healthy eating
viii. Bicycle safety with Holly Kropelin and Constable Guy Beaudry

Business arising from the minutes
a. Sex Ed curriculum reviewed grade by grade; Carmela Klug & Anne Carradice
noting the concerns & expressed wishes of the School Council. Following is a
summary of the discussion:
i. Parents must know when sexual health content is being taught & exactly
what will be taught
ii. Boys & girls must be separated during the sexual health component of the
health course
1. Want a male teacher for the boys & female teacher for the girls
iii. It was relayed that at a recent PIC (Parent Involvement Committee) meeting
that there was provision for parents to choose an alternative sexual health
curriculum & opt out of the provincial curriculum – Anne will follow up on
this option
iv. SCAP School Council members plan to search for alternative sexual health
curricula
b. Letter received about graduation – there was a letter written to the CPA board
from a parent of a SCAP student expressing concern about graduation being less
God honouring & God centered than in previous years
i. Acknowledged that the RRDSB theme of “Believing/Achieving/Dreaming”
must be acknowledged & is a theme that can & should be promoted from a
Biblical perspective in our school
ii. School Council felt that God was very much acknowledged & honoured in the
SCAP graduation ceremonies
7. News & Reports:
a. Teacher/Student Update (Lee-Anne; Rebecca sends her regrets, but arrived later,
if there were questions)
i. Students were involved in tree planting & set a new record of 40 trees each
in ½ hr for the Guinness World Book of Records
ii. New soccer nets have been ordered to help our Buddy Day activities
1. Thank you to Becca Barker for measuring & ordering these
iii. Student Council organized chapel this week the focus was: worshiping God
iv. Loewen’s Greenhouse coupons again this year as a fundraiser
v. Spring concert was moved to June 8 due to the numerous activities in May
vi. Field Day – June 12
1. Lee-Anne following up on the many details around this event
2. This event is open to the public
3. People willing to volunteer can contact Diane Veldhuisen for
details
8. New Business/Questions and Answers:
a. Next school year election of School Council members
i. Request for nominations will go out in 1st SCAP Rap on Aug 26, 2015
ii. Deadline for nominations will be September 11, 2015
iii. Election will be held at the Open House…..actual date to be determined
b. Updated policies – no issues noted
9. Next Meeting – to be held in September after the election of members
10. Meeting adjourned at 9:05 pm
