Part 7: Paragraph Writing
Description
A paragraph is a group of sentences that develops a main idea, which
is the most important idea of that paragraph. The sentence with the main idea is
called a ‘Topic Sentence’. Other sentences are used to support the main idea.
They are supporting details.
There are many types of paragraphs depending on how the main idea
and the supporting ideas are organized. They are paragraphs of description,
opinion, cause-effect, process, and so on. In this unit we are going to discuss a
paragraph of description.
A ‘Description’ is a paragraph with a main idea that gives the impression
of a certain feature about something, someone, or some place, and the

supporting ideas are details telling what the thing, the person or the place is like.
In description writing, prepositions are used a lot. They include the
following.

The following is an example of a paragraph describing a one-thousandbaht banknote. The underlined part is the topic sentence.
In Thailand the currency used is Thai baht. We will take a look at the
highest value bank note which is one-thousand baht. In the middle is a picture of
King Bhumipol, who is our beloved King. In the upper right corner of the bank
note is the Arabic number which shows the bank note’s denomination, and on
the lower right is the bank note’s serial number. On the left-hand side, on top is
the bank note’s serial number which is printed in Thai figures; underneath is a
symbol of the King together with the signatures of the Minister of Finance and the
governer of the Bank of Thailand. Under those two authorized signatures are the
bank note’s denomination printed in large Thai numbers. In the left upper corner
of the bank note is the Garuda, which is a legendary bird believed to belong to
one of the highest Gods, as in Thai society we have a belief that the King is a

divine God.

exports can be quoted either in the buyer's
currency or the seller's currency. But usually
they are quoted in a hard currency such as
US dollars, Japanese yen, or euro. Terms of
delivery are always indicated in the price
quoted. At this point, the international
standard Incoterms play an important role (for
the exporter to quote the price to the
importer.)
Incoterms are a set of international
rules published by the International Chamber
of Commerce, Paris with the aim of avoiding
disagreements which may arise from
differences in trading practices in different
countries. Incoterms help make clear the
responsibilities of the exporter and the
importer since there are many costs in
sending goods from one country to another,
such as the cost of packing, insurance, duty,
and freight, in addition to the cost or the value
of the goods themselves.
