COMPLETING YOUR APPLICATION

The written application and supporting documentation is the basis on which the decision is made as to which applicants will progress to the next stage of the selection process and be offered an interview.

Therefore, it is of primary importance and should be prepared carefully.

Your application should contain:

 A completed job application form (including Addressing the Selection Criteria)

 Up to date Resume

 Copies of qualifications, licences or tickets relevant to the position

Application Form

The application form is included at the end of this information package. This form allows us to collect important information about you required for the selection process including contact and referee details. Please take the time to complete your form fully and correctly as this is your introduction to the organisation and a chance to demonstrate your communication skills. If you do not include relevant information you run the risk of missing out on an interview.

If you would like to type your application form rather than writing it out you can request to have a word format copy of the form emailed out to you by calling our administration section on (02) 6941 2400.

EEO Data

This section of the application is not compulsory. This information allows us to assess and report on the number of applications received by members of equity target groups. This information can then be used to monitor and improve our attraction methods to members of these target groups as part of

Councils Equal Employment Opportunity Management Plan. This information is not used as part of the selection decision.

Addressing the Selection Criteria

Addressing the essential and desirable selection criteria is a critical step in your application for the position. You need to clearly provide a response to each selection criteria. Highlight your knowledge and experience by providing relevant examples. Don’t forget to highlight transferable skills if you do not have direct experience in the area listed.

This information will be used to short-list candidates for interview. The selection panel can only make a judgement about your suitability based on the information you provide. The panel will use the information you provide to make a comparison of your claims to the position with that of other applicants.

Selection Criteria is divided into 2 parts:

1. Essential – knowledge, skills and abilities which the applicant must be able to demonstrate/meet in order to meet the requirements of the position (and progress to interview)

2. Desirable – knowledge, skills and abilities which are identified as beneficial to the role, skill shortages, transferable skills or those that would add depth to the essential requirements.

Practical Tips:

Under each selection criteria you need to address the criteria – do not just state that you meet it, you must outline how you have demonstrated this. Just writing ‘yes’, ‘no’ or ‘I can meet this criteria’ is not a sufficient response.

Provide examples, highlight major achievements and list any formal training that you have completed to support your claims.

 Don’t underestimate your skills and experience, even if you do not have direct experience in a work area or task you may have transferable skills. Do not just consider paid experience, you may have relevant experience that you have gained as a volunteer for example.

Example Response - Operational

Criteria:

Response:

Current Traffic Control Ticket – Stop/Slow and related experience

I currently hold a Traffic Control Ticket expiry date 6 July 2012. I have 2 years’ experience carrying out traffic control duties on small-medium worksites on a daily basis.

Resume

You should include a resume (curriculum vitae) that is simple, clear and concise and most importantly, up to date. It should include: personal details, education and training, employment history (organisation, positions, dates, main responsibilities/achievements), skills/experience including those gained outside paid work.

If you are concerned about ‘gaps’ in your work history or training history you should explain these in your cover letter. An example of how to explain this would be: ‘you will note that from Nov 2006 –

Nov 2009 there is a gap in my employment history, the reason for this is that I was out of the workforce after the birth of my children during this time’.

Copies of Qualifications

You need to provide copies of any relevant licences/qualifications to substantiate claims made in your application. Copies must show your name, the authorising/issuing agency and the expiry date (if applicable).

This is another important source of information for the panel to use in selecting the most suitable applicants for interview.

Getting Assistance

If you feel that you have the skills and experience required to meet the requirements of the position, but that your ability to prepare an application may limit your ability to gain an interview there are a few options available to you:

 You can have someone else assist you in preparing the application: either a friend or family member/ an employment assistance agency like Riverina Community College or Summit;

 Contact our HR department if you are unsure of how to complete any of the forms or requirements of the application;

 Speak to the Contact Officer listed for the position if you require further information about the job you are interested in. Such discussion will help you in deciding not only whether you apply, but also what aspects of your qualifications and experience you should emphasise.
