Welcome to a new semester! Observe the following policies to help you achieve success.
1. The students are expected to follow all HANDBOOK and Classroom rules.
2. The students are expected to be on time to class and be prepared with textbook, netbook,
notebook, and pen or pencil each day. Students are expected to write any notes or vocabulary
given during the class, as well as complete and keep all handouts given in a designated folder
or binder.
3. The students are responsible for getting all notes and homework assignments from any days
that she/he may be absent.
4. Homework will be due at the BEGINNING of the period on the due date given. Work should be
turned in to the appropriate folder.
5. Late assignments will be accepted with a 20% deduction of the maximum possible points from
the score earned up to seven calendar days prior to the final exam.
6. Absences, approved or unapproved, do not change the due date for major projects that was
assigned prior to the absence.
7. If a student is absent on the day a test is given, he/she will have to make up the test. The
student must make special arrangements with me as to when the test will be made up. For
work assigned when students are absent, the student will have the number of days absent to
make up their work.
8. Grades will be based on the School Board approved scale:
100-92%=A 91-83%=B 82-74%=C 73-65%=D 64-0%=F
9. Any student is welcome to come in before or after school for extra help if needed.
Course Description: This introductory course explores the usefulness of family and consumer sciences
in the home and in related occupations. Course content includes materials on personal values and goals,
recognition of family relationships and responsibilities, and vocational careers.
Unit 1: Personal Development
Chapters 1-7
MPO Objectives:
Students should be able to:
-Have an understanding of the term personality and recognize different personality traits
-Know the difference between values, goals, and standards
-Set long and short term goals
-Integrate goal setting and decision making into the career planning process
-Explain how decisions affect people and identify the six-step process in decision making
Unit 2: Relationship Skills
Chapters 8-13
MPO Objectives:
Students should be able to:
-Distinguish among different kinds of relationships
-Define verbal and nonverbal communication
-Explain how tone, body language, and image send positive communication
-Differentiate between passive, assertive, and aggressive peer pressure
Unit 3: Families and Friendships
Chapters 14-20
MPO Objectives:
Students should be able to:
-Explain the value of friendship and ways to make and keep friends
-Identify the functions that families fill for individuals
-Identify the basic family life cycle and ways to adjust and cope with changes in the cycle
Unit 4: Child Care and Development
Chapters 21-26
MPO Objectives:
Students should be able to:
-Identify the responsibilities of babysitting and describe the pre-school aged child
-Describe the various stages of growth in a child and identify characteristics with each stage
Unit 6: Food, Nutrition, and Wellness
Chapters 36-55
MPO Objectives:
Students should be able to:
-Use guidelines for grocery shopping decisions including comparison shopping
-Identify criteria for purchasing fresh, frozen, and canned food
-Give characteristics of various dairy products and ways to prepare them
-Describe cooking methods used to prepare protein foods and ways to store them
-Identify nutrients in food and their functions and the importance of nutrition
Unit 7: Clothing and Textiles
Chapters 56-68
MPO Objectives:
Students should be able to:
-Practice correct procedures in laundering clothes
-Read a pattern and follow directions in clothing construction
