Pay By Touch
Based in San Francisco, California, Pay By Touch consumers can use the Pay By Touch
system to pay for purchases simply by swiping their fingers on a Pay By Touch sensor. The
system securely connects users to user accounts at point-of-sale (POS) locations, eliminating
the need for users to carry credit or debit cards, checks or cash.
CHALLENGE
The JBoss Application Server,
which the company was using
to test J2EE applications for
its Web site, didn't integrate
with the WebSphere
Application Server (WAS)
production environment. To
streamline the development
process and reduce costs,
Pay By Touch needed to
implement a compatible, lowcost J2EE development
server.

BENEFITS
SOLUTION
Pay By Touch implemented
IBM WebSphere Application
Server Community Edition
(WASCE) V1.0 software on
Intel-based hardware. The
software acts as a readily
accessible and flexible
foundation for developing
Java-based applications,
which can be easily deployed
on the WebSphere production
server after testing.
Application eliminated the
need to port applications to
production after testing.
Time savings facilitated a 50
percent increase in the IT
staff's productivity.
By standardizing on
WebSphere software,
receives around-the-clock
support from IBM in all areas
of its infrastructure.

Open Source and Linux can offer a reason-to-call, a source of revenue
through IBM software and services, and an on-ramp to further IBM software
Customers are looking for a “trusted advisor” on Open Source and Linux –
and IBM Business Partners can meet this need
Linux is now in mainstream usage in many areas – and emerging in others
such as Client, Real time, and Security
Customers typically do not choose open source software so they can modify
the code – instead they choose it for business or technical reasons such as
flexibility, TCO, or functionality
Open source is not a “silver bullet” for customers and offers its own
challenges – but in can provide real benefit especially as part of a mixed open
source / private source solution
There are many ways to make money around open source – including Direct
(e.g. support), Indirect (e.g. on-ramp), and Disruptive (e.g. competitive
displacement)
