PHOTOSYNTHESIS LET’S GET INTO THIS… • I can describe the process of photosynthesis and write its equation. • I can explain the transfer of energy that takes place in photosynthesis. • I can explain the difference between the light dependent and light independent reactions. LEARNER OUTCOMES • http://teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=62625 What could be better than a rap song about photosynthesis? • List some things that we use in our everyday lives that are solar powered (or could be solar powered). Solar Power! • In a way we are solar powered…explain how??? We run on solar power? • In one day, enough solar energy reaches the United States to power the ENTIRE WORLD’S energy demands for 1 year. • If this interests you, consider taking APES next year SOLAR POWER • Producers are organisms that make their own food (chemical energy) from inorganic materials. • Plants do not make energy; they capture it, store it, and deliver it. • Energy can be transformed, but never created or destroyed (1st Law of Thermodynamics) Producers • The process that captures energy from sunlight to make sugars that store chemical energy. • Directly or indirectly, the energy for almost all organisms begins as sunlight. PHOTOSYNTHESIS • Plants absorb visible light for photosynthesis. • Visible light appears white but it is made up of several colors or wavelengths of light. * Chlorophyll is a molecule in chloroplasts that absorbs some of the energy in visible light. CHLOROPHYLL… SOUNDS MORE LIKE BOROPHYLL TO ME! • There are two types of chlorophyll; a and b. • Together, they absorb mostly red and blue wavelengths of light, not green. • Green is reflected, which is why plants appear green to us! TYPES OF CHLOROPHYLL • Photosynthesis can be broken down into 2 reactions: • 1. Light-dependent reactions capture energy from sunlight and water to make ATP. • 2. Light-independent reactions use ATP and carbon dioxide to make glucose! TWO REACTIONS IN PHOTOSYNTHESIS • 6CO2 +6 H2O -> C6H12O6 + 6O2 Overall Equation of Photosynthesis • http://teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=62625 A Photosynthesis Rap 1 More Time!
