New organization
• CERN
– Detector cooling. Transfer of activity to PH (i.e. most likely DT) under discussion
– TS/LEA gas supply: Transfer of activity to PH/DT (will possibly happen).
– TS/LEA EAM. Will merge with some people from AB/ATB (Gatignon,
EFTHYMIOPOULOS, etc.) + a LHC planning group (?) to engineering dept (EN).
– TS/SU: will become a section in AB/ABP
– IT/CO: will be merged with some people from AB/CO and then form a group in
engineering department, GL Roberto Saban. PH would like to preserve JCOP, and
also Wayne as coordinator.
• DT structure
– Allain Gonidec stays Dep. Dep. Leader (DDL) throughout 2009
– 2nd DDL position (currently M. Doser) will be suppressed
– Linear Collider / CLIC detector study
• L. Linssen in charge, together with W.D. Schlatter + some fellows/students
– A. Gonidec will from 2009 on be in charge of White Paper R&D WPs. There will be a
review committee set up to assess progress and objectives. Yearly reviews.
– Detector Cooling  See slides.
• White Paper R&D WP being created. A technical student, Joao Noite (PT), selected
(supervision by Antti, prel.). Starts 1 of Jan 2009.
– Discussion with A. Ceccucci on NA62 (Ferdi present). Several possible involvements
of DT: e.g. straw tracker, gas systems (straws, RICH), RICH vessel, controls,
Gigatracker mechanics. Approval by RB expected. Then search for funding. Draft
MOU exists.
Safety matters
•
In the new CERN organigram Safety commission seems to be located similarly as today…

Safety matters
•
Building repair status:
– Building 25 roof being re-worked right now with heavy equipment
• Removal of an old concrete layer.
• Is the building safe during the operation? We, e.g. TSO, not too much
informed …
DT coordination meeting, A. Onnela
7
Workshop matters
•
DT gluing service / succession plan for D. Fraissard:
– 13 Nov: Visits to TS/MME Polymers & Resins workshop (Paolo Chiggiato) and
to DT gluing lab (Daniel Fraissard)
• TS Polymer lab: ”Material science oriented”, electrical insulations, feedthroughs, several ovens and vacuum chambers for resin preparation and
curing. ~2 technicians quasi- permanently.
• DT gluing lab: ”Assembly gluing oriented”, one big oven, space for
lamination work and large assemblies. <1 person part-time.
– Preserving and promoting the DT gluing lab seems justified, needed in our
projects and complementary to what TS/MME has.
– Next step: Choosing of successor(s) for Daniel Fraissard
• Diego Perini, Hans Danielsson, Andrea Catinaccio, Antti Onnela to meet
and select candidate(s)
• Check with Daniel Fraissard + Christian + Ferdi + possible project leader
before asking the candidate(s)

Future of Detector Cooling
1. The new detector cooling project in PH-DT
Initial Mandate (preliminary)
• Build up theoretical and practical expertise for future ‘advanced’ detector cooling
systems (PFC, CO2, not H2O)
• Supports consolidation efforts for existing detector cooling systems
• Develop thermal management solutions for detector upgrades
• Contribute to standardization (equipment, controls)
Foreseen resources
• 1 engineer
• a 2nd cooling expert should be hired during 2009
• 3-4 FTE of technicians,
• one PJAS working on controls (already working with MB)
• 1 tech. Student, 1 Fellow
• Lab space and Mechanical support
• Synergies with DT gas systems and magnet controls
PH will create a R&D WP
(White paper funds, theme 3)
for cooling.
If this approach is successful it is expected that CERN can reinforce this team to a central unit, which
can undertake the construction and maintenance of the future detector cooling systems.

2. Set up a Cooling Working Group (CWG)
Initial Mandate (preliminary)
• Consolidation: (2009-2010)
-
Understand shortcomings of present systems
Examine present running experience and future operation requirements (e.g. radiation aspects)
Support technical groups and experiments in improving the present systems
Define activities of common interest for the DT Cooling team
• LHC upgrade phase 1:Pixel Detector Exchange (B-layer in ATLAS, Pixel replacement in
CMS) (2009 – 2011)
- Define and examine the present requirements of the cooling systems for the new Pixel Detectors
in ATLAS and CMS
- Work out cooling system proposals for the pixel detectors (where possible these systems
should be prototype cases for the upgrade detectors).
• LHC upgrade phase 2: (2009-2012)
- Define and examine the present requirements of the cooling systems for the upgrade Trackers of
ATLAS and CMS. Follow up changes in the requirements (and their consequences) in a
transparent and traceable way.
- Work on a consensus for a common cooling technology for these systems and propose coherent
and costed design layouts. The design proposals should include the control system and exploit
at best standardizations between ATLAS and CMS.
- Steer and rationalize the R&D projects and the construction of selected prototype systems
- Work out a QA plan for the construction, installation and commissioning of the future systems.

The CWG mandate should extend over
all parts of the detector cooling systems
(including heaters or heat exchangers
inside the experiments). The CWG has
no executive power. The final technical
choices remain the responsibility of the
experiments.

DT manpower and TS/CV-DC merge to a DT Cooling project
• avoids doubling of infrastructure and resources
• avoids artificial split between M&O (CV-DC) and future systems (DT)
• efficient training of new DT personnel
• efficient integration of new DT personnel in consolidation efforts
• simplification for CWG (deals with a single cooling team)

5.2 Lab and office space, access to workshops
B187 is a high quality work area
(air conditioned) of about 300 m2.
It is in direct proximity to the gas
systems team (welding, electrical
and small mech. workshop) and to
the DT main mech. workshop
B166.

5.3 Transition
During the LHC shutdown period 08/09, consolidation work on the cooling systems of
ATLAS and CMS is of highest importance. It should not be compromised by removols of
offices and labs.
Proposal:
• CV-DC personnel remain in their offices and labs
• In parallel, office space and lab space in 187 is prepared
• Removal around mid 2009
• The formal transfer of CV-DC to PH could take place as soon as formal aspects
(budgets, maintenance contract, quota for fellow and students) are clarified, ideally on 1
Jan 2009
5.4 Computational Fluid Dynamics
The CFD activities, which rely currently on student and fellow manpower, supervised by M.
Battistin, should be continued as a service for the whole of CERN. The service could be part
of the PH cooling team or remain in EN/CV.

General approach for new projects
•Avoid fragmentation into too many mini projects (~1-2 FTE)
•Collaborate with experiment’s CERN group
•Try to apply available expertise and infrastructure (DSF, bond lab, thin film lab,
irradiation facilities, mechanical workshops, gluing lab...)
•Find interesting projects to keep phys/eng/tech up to date in new technologies
Aim for ~2-3 main projects with major hardware deliverable
+ a couple of smaller projects.
+ engineering/integration/installation support
First discussions took place…
•ATLAS upgrade: pixel endcap, m-strip tracker endcap
•CMS upgrade: cooling (see next slide), muon RPCs, beam monitoring, humidity
measurement
•ALICE upgrade: HMPID
•LHCb upgrade: VELO upgrade (40 MHz)
•TOTEM upgrade: Large GEM (T1), part of WP5
•NA62: Giga tracker, Straw tracker, gas systems, controls, (RICH ?)

Engineering R&D
(discussion forum, all LHC experiments + DT participating, moderated by L.Linssen)
We expressed interest to participate in a couple of common engineering R&D
activities, e.g.

Detector cooling
o DT/CMX/AT-CRG intend to study suitability of CO2 cooling for large scale detectors.
Pilot case: New CMS pixel det.; Timescale 18 months.
o Could be extended ...

Reverse engineering = 3D models for high accuracy reconstruction of built structures.
DT/TS-SU. 1 shared fellow requested. Time scale 2 years.

Material for future detectors (structural, thermal, radiation hard, pipework and joining
techniques).
