Little Nesley Cottage Useful Information Lighting the Wood burner Open the doors – right hand door first by rotating the door knob. Place firelighter in centre with kindling around and over and then place a couple of larger logs in. Light the firelighter and close the doors. The two lower slides in doors should be slid to open the air vents. The top air vents should be left open all the time when burning. Once the kindling is alight and the two logs are starting to burn, close the lower slides by about a ¼. From now on all parts of the burner will become very hot and a glove should be used for any contact. The log burner must not be used with the doors left open. The aim is not to have a roaring fire but a steady burn, so occasionally add a log or two to keep everything ticking over with a medium flame alongside using the lower air vents. Please do not leave the burner unattended for long without closing all vents. Fires generally burn better with a layer of ash in the base. Do not worry about cleaning out the grate unless the ash is literally falling out of the door, if it becomes necessary to remove some ash then please use the metal bucket and shovel to remove some of the ash, which can be spread on the garden.
