FIRST YEAR SUCCESS
FIRST YEAR SUCCESS
The First Year Success (FYS) system is designed to
improve learning for new students during their first
year of college in efforts to assist them in achieving
academic and personal success.
FOUR COMPONENTS
Recognizing that most students need additional
assistance as they transition to college, the
comprehensive system includes four components:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Orientation
Student Development (SDV) Courses
Family & Friends Information Sessions
Academic Alert

ORIENTATION
GETTING STARTED RIGHT!
New students participate in a face-to-face or online orientation
after completing the placement test and prior to enrolling.
TOPICS INCLUDES:
1. Support Services
2. Financial Services
3. Student Rights & Responsibilities
4. Academic Requirements
5. Enrollment Instructions
6. Online Assessment and Evaluation
SDV COURSES
SDV Courses promote student success by assisting students with their transition into
college. All new students should complete one of the SDV courses during their first 15
credit hours.
TOPICS INCLUDE:
1. Career Exploration and Development
2. College Resources and Policies
3. Academic Planning
4. Study Skills
5. Life Management
FAMILY & FRIENDS
Family & Friends Information Sessions provide an opportunity for those
individuals who are important in the lives of our students to learn more
about their transition to TCC and help them achieve their individual goals.
ACADEMIC ALERT
Academic Alert is designed to improve learning for students and assist them in achieving
success by connecting them with appropriate campus resources and services.
 Web-based referral program for students experiencing
academic difficulties.
 When a faculty member submits a referral,
the identified student automatically receives
an email notification listing suggested services
based on the academic concerns.

questions as carefully as possible.
The assessment has 6 parts and you must complete all 6 parts. The first five
parts consist of multiple choice questions and each may take about 5 minutes
to complete. Part 6 asks you to describe what you liked and did not like about
