Cathedral High School Vision
Cathedral High School, a Catholic institution
in the Holy Cross tradition,
will be the model for all high schools
as she profoundly shapes the way students
think, serve and lead.
Dear Cathedral Parents,
Cathedral High School Mission
As we plan to continue improving “the Cathedral
Cathedral, a Catholic college preparatory high school
in the Holy Cross tradition,
experience” for your children and for parents, we have
provides
to
a
diverse group of students opportunities
developed a Climate Audit Survey, which will be sent to Seniors
for spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional
and Sophomores and their parents, as well as to Faculty and
and physical growth through service and academic excellence.
Staff. This will occur later this month or in early December.
When this arrives, I ask that you will thoughtfully respond to the
survey since we need as much participation as possible. More detailed news on this survey will be sent out soon.
~~~~~
I have noticed that this year we seem to have a low number of Mass Intentions for our morning
masses. Remember, if you wish to have a mass offered for one of your loved ones, living or dead,
please contact either Father Munshower (968-7362) or Sister Lynne (968-7383) to have one of these
Masses for them.
Senior Parents:
 On Monday, November 7th, the Cathedral Senior Class of 2012 had a class meeting with regard to
ordering the graduation cap, gown, tassel and graduation announcements. If your student did not bring
home the ordering packet, there are extra packets at the front desk. Orders will be taken at school on
Wednesday, November 16th during all lunches and after school until 6:00 p.m. Be sure to turn in your order on
the 16th.
Senior Parents:
 On Dec. 5th the annual mass with the Auxiliary Bishop of Indianapolis will occur. We will gather after first
period in the Robert V. Welch Student Activity Center to board buses. Upon returning to Cathedral,
seniors will be dismissed. They are to be in school uniform on this day.
Senior Parents:
Senior Yearbook Portraits: For the sake of consistency in the book, all seniors must have their
yearbook picture taken at Prestige, even if they have had other senior pictures taken elsewhere. Don’t let your
senior be left out of his/her senior yearbook. Call for an appointment today. Call 317-829-2088 after 2
p.m. There is a $15 sitting fee for those wanting the yearbook pose only. The deadline is Dec. 13.
Senior Parents.
As noted in the mailing you should have received dated October 6, the deadline for submitting an ad
honoring your graduating senior in the 1012 yearbook is Friday, Nov. 18. These ads represent a strong
tradition at Cathedral, so you won’t want your student to be one of the few omitted. If you did not receive an
order form or have misplaced it, please go to John Hannan’s Cathedral Web page, click on Journalism 2:
Yearbook, and then on the Advertising Information resource folder to download the order form. You may
also get there by clicking on this link: http://www.cathedral-irish.org/page.cfm?p=549.
<http://www.cathedral-irish.org/page.cfm?p=549.> While the deadline is important, we will accept orders
after that date on a first-come-first-served basis while space and time allow.
more opportunity on Nov. 9 at 7:00PM in the Student life Center Commons. While this is geared for Freshmen
The Phoning for Dollar$ Fall Phonathon has been completed, and it was a huge success! This phonathon team was a
very spirited, motivated, talented and enjoyable group of students, and they did amazing work in support of the Cathedral
Fund*.
I’m pleased to say that in 10 nights of calling alumni, parents, past parents, and friends of CHS, this team raised $47,633
in gifts and pledges for the Cathedral Fund! This is a record dollar amount of gifts and pledges for a single phonathon
during recent years. Many of these students balanced their phonathon work with homework and came to work multiple
nights. Some came to make calls after theatre and sports rehearsals and practices. A couple came
after school, and one came during her Resource period to make calls. These students made
powerful connections with CHS alums and parents and gained valuable experience in community
relations. Most importantly, they served and gave back to Cathedral.
Please take a moment to look at the team of callers below and congratulate those you know for their
splendid efforts and record success in support of the Cathedral Fund. Those in italics were the top ten point leaders in
acquiring pledges and gifts.
*As you know, the Cathedral Fund is a family of funds for educational expenses and initiatives not fully covered by tuition -including academic/faculty initiatives, arts, athletics, campus enhancements, service/spirituality, technology, and, of course,
tuition assistance. The Cathedral Fund touches every student and every classroom, and all of us as faculty and staff.
Open House Yard Signs for Your Neighborhood:
If you live in a neighborhood that gets lots of traffic, and if you would be willing to help market
Cathedral’s Open House by placing a yard sign in your yard, you can get a sign from
Enrollment Management. Simply stop by and see Amy Weber, or have your son or daughter stop by
to get a sign. Open House is on Thursday, November 17, so having your sign out for about two weeks
would be great! If you have any questions, contact Amy Weber at aweber@cathedral-irish.org or
(317) 968-7370. Thanks for helping us market Open House in your neighborhood!
During the week of October 14, the National Honor Society and Debbie Boyd sold ribbons to honor and remember those
of the CHS Family whose lives have been touched by cancer. The NHS in turn generously donated proceeds of this
endeavor ($72.00) to the Cathedral Fund. On behalf of Cathedral and the Advancement Office, I would like to give sincere
thanks to the NHS, to Debbie, and to all who purchased ribbons in support of this thoughtful gesture. Your generosity is
deeply appreciated.
True Wealth
Daniel Flood – Brownsburg, Indiana
Age Group: Under 18
Themes: charity & service, good & evil, goodness & kindness, humility
Share This Essay:
I’ve been to New Orleans and seen the destruction of Hurricane Katrina years after it passed; I’ve built houses in
South Carolina in an area where the average income is well below the national average; and I’ve helped the
homeless in my own city. Each person I have met while working has taught me a different lesson: lessons that I will
never forget. Some people stand out more than others, but one man and the lessons he taught me stand out
among the rest.
Biloxi, Mississippi was hit hard by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. A native Mississippian, David was a frail 65 year old
man who wore a stocking cap despite temperatures in the upper 80s. Hurricane Katrina took its toll on David’s small
house; it was beat up with beetles in the wall and holes in the ceiling. While we took down the walls to replace the
drywall and beetles fell on top of us, he stood a few feet behind us cracking jokes and telling stories. We took
breaks and David showed us a card trick, a coin trick, or some other magic trick meant for a child. Despite being
poor, he wore a smile on his face unmatched by any I have ever seen. How could a person as poor as David be as
happy as he was?
I believe money does not buy happiness. Money buys things: material possessions for material hearts. Americans
have forgotten that having money is a luxury, not a necessity. A life should not be focused on the pursuit of money,
rather the pursuit of happiness. David taught me to be content with the life that I have and not obsess over money.
He built up his happiness over years of living a life with a child’s innocence. Happiness cannot be bought. True
wealth can’t be measured in dollars. I believe true wealth can only be measured by a person’s soul. His house had
beetles in the walls and holes in the ceiling, but he is the richest person I know.
P.S. Wealth Management'
If you haven't done anything with your old IRA, it's time to review your "wealth management." Invest in your son!
What greater wealth can a man have than healthy, happy children?
Also, "The Dad's Day Breakfast program seeks to include all sons at Cathedral. If your son's dad has passed away,
or is not present in his son's life for some other reason, it could be an uncle, a granddad, a mother, etc., who
attends the breakfast. Please also know, we have some dads who no longer have sons at Cathedral, but wish to continue
attending the breakfasts, and would love to have "a Cathedral son" with whom to share a dad's day breakfast! If your son
is interested, please call Bill Bissmeyer to make a reservation!
Tuition Assistance for 2012-2013
Families with students returning for 10th, 11th and/or 12th grade next year and who are interested in applying for
tuition assistance for next year can begin to do so as of November 1 and should apply by
February 15, 2012. The Enrollment Management Office recently mailed information about this process
to families who received need-based tuition assistance during the current school year, but families can
learn more by visiting www.gocathedral.com/tuition.



Also, there are a few key changes to the process for next year that impact returning families:
In the case of parents who are divorced or legally separated, Cathedral now requires each household to complete
the process.
Families now submit tax documentation directly to School & Student Services for Financial Aid (SSS) instead of to
Cathedral.
Families will receive tuition assistance awards at the time of re-enrollment (April).
Important tuition assistance dates are as follows:
 November 1—Earliest date to apply for tuition assistance for 2012-2013 (http://sss.nais.org)
 December 31—Deadline for applying for tuition assistance for incoming 9th graders (Class of 2016)
14

February 15—Deadline for applying for tuition assistance for returning students
Again, much more detail is available online at www.gocathedral.com/tuition.
Thank you,
Duane Emery, Vice President for Enrollment Management
National Institute On Drug Abuse (NIDA) - Drug Facts Chat Day (a real time web chat):
We were one of 71 schools from around the country participating in this first landmark event. Over
10,000 questions (combined) were submitted most of which were answered at some time during the
day. We will receive a transcript in a few days to use with our classes.
I am so proud of (most) of the students and how they represented Cathedral. This was a great
learning experience for them to ask professionals to share their knowledge and viewpoint on all aspects of drugs and
alcohol.
~~~~~
Parents may inadvertently increase the likelihood that their children will use alcohol or other drugs.
Have you ever heard parents say:
“I’m not naive; I know most kids drink.”
“All kids are going to experiment with alcohol”
“Pretty much everyone drinks in high school.”
“I tell my child, if he’s going to drink, I want him to do it at home.”
“Alcohol and other drug use is an epidemic among teenagers.”
Prevention studies consistently show that young people overestimate use, and underestimate
abstinence, on the part of their peers and older teens. Many parents share these
misperceptions, believing that “experimentation” and/or use are inevitable rites of passage for
adolescents. In fact, the large majority of middle and high school students are not using alcohol or other drugs.
In conveying, directly or indirectly, their own incorrect beliefs, parents unintentionally reinforce their children’s
misperceptions, which can ultimately increase adolescent alcohol and other drug use.
Parents play a significant role in their children’s lives and in preventing their use and abuse of substances,
especially as children grow into adolescence and face new risks, pressures and challenges. By knowing what is
really going on in their child’s world – that most of their child’s peers don't use alcohol or other drugs, don't smoke
marijuana, don't have parents who allow them to drink, don't think it's cool to get drunk - parents can speak to their
children about these issues from a position of confidence and strength, rather than fear and speculation Prevention
is strengthened when parents help their children develop accurate beliefs about their peers' behaviors.

We are still having issues with some cars stopping on the circle for pick-up and delivery of students to and from
school. We are asking that you do not do this as it causes traffic back-ups and has resulted in accidents in past

Janice Gabe, well know social worker, will be at Cathedral in the Commons at 7:00PM on Thursday, Nov. 10 th. Ms.
Gabe will address issues that adolescent parents face today in a frank and compelling manner. Janice will offer practical
suggestions to parents and will answer questions concerning all of the issues that teens today face. It is an evening worth
your time and I strongly suggest that you attend. Janice has spoken many times to parents and her ability to connect and
relate might be of a benefit to you.

Service Outreach News:
The spirit of our service will be guided by Matt 25:35-36: “I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty and you gave
me drink, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless and you gave to shelter. I was ill and you came to see me.”
“It is not one person alone who builds; nor is it one stone, or one single beam of wood which forms it. Each worker
contributes something from his or her own trade; each stone is cut to fit into its one appointed place and each piece of wood
is arranged and placed so as to enhance the general effect of the entire building.” Basil Moreau. Our service efforts are like
pieces of the mosaic which all come together and form the living heart and love of Jesus. Our gifts vary and, as such, we
create a rich tapestry and message of love with our actions. We link our hearts to our Lord and other brothers and sisters
as we seek the kingdom of God.
Class Service Projects Class service projects become perfect opportunities for off-season sport groups and families.
Details on all of these class service projects in November are noted below in Service Opportunities. Our freshmen have
supported the Catholic Charities Christmas Store on Oct 12 with twelve bulging bags of toys and 750 pairs of socks for
families shopping at the Christmas Store in December. Click here for more details about the freshman class service project
in this month on November 17th and 18th. Sophomores will support the community members of Anna’s House with a tasty
spaghetti dinner on Wednesday, Nov. 9 at Anna’s House (4:00 PM-7:30 PM-sophomores). On Saturday, Nov. 12 at the
Cathedral Soup Kitchen (10:30-1:30-juniors) juniors will be preparing a warm and toasty lunch and dialoging with the
homeless. The Cathedral orchestra will also join us to serenade this lunch. Thanks for your efforts to join us in these great
ministries.
Service Festival-Tuesday, November 15, 2011 On Tuesday, Nov 15, from 9:30-11:00, our students will be experiencing
education and experiential learning projects in ten areas of societal needs. Ranging from low cost housing needs and
working with Habitat for Humanity to the special needs and hunger, our students will be exposed to the missions of many
not for profits in the community, learn about community problems, and acquire ways they can commit to assist humanitarian
needs in Indianapolis.
Parent Volunteers For The Service Festival On November 15th, parent volunteers would be greatly appreciated to greet
and support speakers for our ten areas of humanitarian focus. Please let Mrs. Halstead know (email:
chalstead@cathedral-irish.org) if you could help graciously support our visitors on Tuesday, November 15 from 9:30-11.
Thanks so much.
Habitat Co-Presidents Excel Grace Waltz and Claire Welch made a Habitat for Humanity chapter presentation at the
National Habitat for Humanity Convention held in Indianapolis. They were praised for a vivacious and informative dialog
about best practices that they use in the leadership of the Cathedral Habitat for Humanity chapter. Their audience,
university and high school students from across the US active in Habitat activities year around, praised their upbeat and well
developed talk.
Peru Mission Trip We will have a call out meeting at 6:30 in Rm. 3303 on November 10, Mrs. Jamell’s classroom, to

opportunity to enjoy a service, language and cultural adventure in Lima and Cuzco, Peru. Some of the students from last
year’s trip will be there to share their stories and experiences.

have other problems with the linked documents, please proceed to the website to access links from the Service
Opportunities area
under On Campus/Service Outreach.
Please continue to turn to the most compelling areas of need to perform your service stewardship. Thank you for
supporting your class service projects with enthusiasm and compassion. Should you desire to pursue an outreach project
with an agency not listed, you may also consult the list of service agencies available by clicking here. By working with
diligence and interest on your service, you should find yourself achieving about four hours of service each
month. The balance of 2011 and 2012 provides rich opportunities to direct helpful hands and hearts to aid our community
needs.
Service hours for freshmen, sophomore and junior students for the academic year of 2011-12 are due on March 1,
2012. Seniors graduation hours for the academic year of 2011-2012 are due on December 1, 2011. Click here for
the 2011-12 Service Documentation. Click here for the 2011-12 Service Documentation form. Click here for the
Service Hour Criteria. Hours will not be accepted more than sixty days after the date of service performance.
Please check the service criteria because neighbor help, family help and working for a business without pay is not
29
accepted as service hours. We always encourage our students to help their families and neighbors but we do not
accept these efforts as service hours. We seek to perform our service in the spirit of Matthew 25:35-36.

Athletics:
IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (11-7-11): "Promoting education-based athletics in Indiana”
If you get injured in a practice or game, don't be ashamed or afraid to go to your coach or team trainer and let them know
about your injury.
 Injuries are a part of all sports and it is hard to compete when you are not at full strength. You can
also cause serious injury to your body if you don't correctly address the issue.
 The same reasoning applies in the classroom. If your grades aren't up to par and you need to see them
improve, turn to your teacher and ask for help.
More serious injuries and academic deficiencies can sometimes be prevented by early intervention!

Meditation: 1 Corinthians 3:9-11,16-17
The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica
34
Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? (1 Corinthians 3:16)
Anniversaries are important to all of us. Some of those anniversaries are even connected to a particular place: the church
where we were baptized or married, the new house we moved into, our parents’ gravesite. Being in these special places
stirs up memories and sometimes inspires us to rededicate ourselves to a special person or cause.
But why is this church in Rome so important that the anniversary of its dedication is celebrated throughout the world? For a
thousand years, the Lateran Basilica was the residence of the Bishop of Rome, and it still contains the “cathedra,” the chair
that symbolizes his office. Even though the pope today celebrates more official functions at the larger St. Peter’s, St. John
Lateran is still “the mother and head of all churches of the city and of the world,” as the inscription on its façade proclaims.
When we step into a sacred space like a church, especially if we take time to quiet our spirits, we become aware of the
presence of God. But St. Paul reminds us that we are also God’s dwelling-place. He tells us that we should be just as aware
of his presence in us, and in every other believer.
St. Augustine puts it well: “As often as we celebrate the dedication festival of a … church, if we worship attentively, what is
done in temples made with hands is done also in us spiritually. For he lied not who said, ‘The temple of God, which you are,
is holy.’ Therefore, since we are the temple of God —not because we deserve it but only by his grace —let us work hard,
with his help, to be a fitting place for the Holy One to dwell.”
Those charged with keeping a great cathedral clean and in good repair take this responsibility very seriously. We should
work at least as hard at polishing God’s image in ourselves, letting his love shine out from us! And while we’re at it, let’s look
at every fellow believer with the same awe, as a holy dwelling place of the Holy Spirit.
“Holy Spirit, thank you for coming to live in me. Make me into a worthy temple for your presence.”
Blessings,
