Design Your Own Lab In this project you will be creating your own lab to answer a question related to the Mix and Flow of Matter Unit. Your project will require: 1. Testable question 2. Hypothesis If [manipulated variable] … then [what you expect to happen] … because [use scientific reasoning to explain] 3. Variables Manipulated Variable: What are you changing? Responding Variable: What are you trying to find out? (Hint: look at the lab question) Controlled Variable: What are you keeping constant (or the same) throughout the experiment... there should be lots (at least 3)! 4. Materials What will you be using in the lab, list everything 5. Procedure Step by step instructions to follow when conducting the lab o Think back to the “Making a Peanut Butter Sandwich Lesson”, be very detailed and direct in your instructions 6. Observations Must include a table including o Detailed scientific title o Qualitative or quantitative data (which will help you answer your lab question better?) 7. Analysis Use your observations to answer the lab question Include scientific theory/reasoning from class (or research) to help support your observations What is one improvement you would make to your lab? Why? Connection to the real world – how would you use this information in manufacturing, or design? 8. Conclusion One sentence that answers your testable question Remember to avoid “touchy feely words”
