Course Objectives:
MAT 079: Concepts and techniques associated with Pre-Algebra Mathematics including: the
arithmetic of fractions, decimals, proportions, percent, signed number operations, and
applications
MAT 087: Topics include real number systems, algebraic operations, linear equations,
coordinate systems, powers and roots, polynomials, factoring and solving quadratic equations.
The skills and application component will provide students with an opportunity to practice newly
acquired skills and use these skills to solve practical problems.
Pre-requisite: Knowledge of whole number arithmetic
Attendance Policy:
If you are absent from the class, you will be responsible for all material covered in class that day.
If you have 6 absences or more, I may give you a grade of U/F (unofficially withdrawing).
A grade of U/F may affect a your current or future financial aid eligibility
If you are using your cell phone in class, you will be considered absent. This class
requires active participation and if you are using your cell phone you are not participating in
class (meaning you are absent). Cell Phones need to be turned off with no noise once I start my
lesson. No cell phone usage of any kind (calculator, text message, internet…)
Help on campus:
I would encourage you to see me for extra help. Other places that you can go to receive tutoring
are Math Lab: Room M205 and Content Tutoring Center: Room C342
Students with special needs:
The Disability Services Office (DSO) at Onondaga Community College is available to assist

GRADING:
This is pass/fail course. A passing grade (S: satisfactory) will require a minimum 80% on each
chapter test, the final exam, and homework/classwork assignments. In addition to that
requirement, a more specific grade will be assigned according to the following:
Homework/Classwork: 25%, Tests 50%, Final 25%.
SA: 93-100%
SA-: 90-92%
SB+: 86-89%
SB: 80-85%
U: average below 80% (fail)
Tests (50%):
- We will have 3 tests in MAT 079 and 5 tests in MAT 087
- If school closes on the day of the test, you will have to take your test the next class.
- You will have an opportunity to retake your tests to achieve 80% within 7 days after each test.
- You will need to have at least 80% on each of your test in order to take the final exam.
Homework, Classwork, and Quizzes (25%):
- Homework will be given everyday on either papers or coursecompass.com
- You will need to earn at least 80% average for your homework/classwork assignments
- There will be either classwork assignments for students to work in group or quizzes at the end
of the class (no make-up).
Final Exam (25%):
- There will be a comprehensive Final Exam for MAT 079 and another one for MAT 087.
You need to earn at least 80% on each of the final exams to pass the class.
AFTER-SEMESTER WORKSHOP
An After-Semester Workshop is available for students who have worked hard all semester,
attended class on a regular basis, but do not pass the course. Instructor recommendation is
necessary for any student wishing to enroll in the workshop. Certain skills must be demonstrated
on the final exam to be eligible. A grade of SB will be assigned to those students that
successfully complete the workshop. Additionally, the workshop is available for those students
who passed the course, but want to improve their skills prior to taking the next level math class.
