Foreword
This handbook has been prepared to provide a quick reference guide to answer to
commonly asked questions and outline expectations of the West Des Moines
Lacrosse Club (WDMLAX). It is felt by the Board of Directors and coaching staff that
if you properly informed of team policies and player/parent expectations it will
make your decision to participate, and time with, WDMLAX a much more enjoyable
and rewarding experience.
The actual policies referenced or other information contained within may be
changed or updated without notice.
All player and parents of WDMLAX are encouraged to read the complete policies and
procedures of any and all leagues and/or tournaments where WDMLAX may
complete.
Non-Discrimination Statement
West Des Moines Lacrosse Club does not discriminate on the basis of race, creed,
color, religion, national origin, sex, marital status, sexual orientation, gender
identity, physical or mental disability, or socioeconomic status in programs and
activities.
3
Program Philosophy
The WDMLAX program philosophy is one of developing individuals as well as the
team. The organization believes its primary role is to develop the character of
players resulting in future upstanding members of society. The WDMLAX
organization understands that the life lessons taught to our athletes will carry far
beyond the field, and that preparing our players for competition entails imparting
values and strategies that will impact them long beyond their playing days. The
program strives to develop and improve positive citizenship traits among the
program’s participants. The team endeavors to win, but not at the expense of
learning, development, and most importantly the enjoyment of playing for the love
of the game. Participation in the WDMLAX club program, while a privilege and not a
right, should provide many athletes a lifetime basis for personal values, for work
and leisure activities. Every effort will be made to support the team with the best
facilities, equipment and most qualified staff available. Coaches will teach the
specific skills necessary for improvement as a lacrosse player and provide guidance
in the development of self-realization, good sportsmanship, cooperation, leadership,
ethical behavior, and an appreciation for the importance of practice and a strong
work ethic.
The Middle School (boys) program trains the athletes in the basic skills of lacrosse.
Equal playing time among players is not guaranteed, however, the philosophy at the
Middle School level is to emphasize player development over wins. The coaching
staff will attempt to keep disparity in playing time amongst team members to a
minimum. The emphasis at the Middle School level will be to develop the skills of
the team members in order to enhance their ability to compete at the Junior Varsity
and Varsity levels in the future.
The Junior Varsity (boys) program trains athletes in the skills of the sport. NELAX
competition begins at this level and WDMLAX will afford as many players as
possible the opportunity to participate within the schedule so that they may achieve
their fullest learning and performance levels. While equal playing time among
players is not guaranteed, the philosophy at the Junior Varsity level is to emphasize
player development over wins. There are times in the game that are considered
‘coach time.’ These are key times in the game when coaching strategy and player
performance may trump equal playing time considerations. This is generally when
the team is serving a penalty, trying to take advantage when our opponent is serving
a penalty, or the last quarter of a close game. The emphasis at the Junior Varsity
level will be to develop the skills of the team members in order to enhance their
ability to compete at the Varsity level in the future.
The Varsity program (boys and girls) will continue to develop lacrosse players, and
utilize those who show the greatest ability in a variety of skills and represent good
sportsmanship and strong work ethic. Team members who are more able will be
the primary participants. The Varsity teams are for those who have learned the
4
basic skills well and perform them both in practice and in competition. Role
specialization of the athletes will become more evident at this level. Role
specialization is necessary at this level of play for the team to be competitive.
Athletes may be used in specific roles for the benefit of the entire team. Therefore,
while an effort is made to allow as many members as possible to complete, the more
advanced athletes will receive the majority of the playing time. The Varsity team
will strive to compete in the high levels of competition possible. The team will
endeavor to finish as high as possible in any league or tournament competition.
Team members who display leadership and/or enthusiasm, in combination with
basic skill development, may enhance their opportunity to participate at both the
Varsity and Junior Varsity levels of competition. It should be understood that some
team members may participate at both the Varsity and Junior Varsity level
simultaneously, but likely to differing degrees.
The following information outlines key tenets of our philosophy.
ACADEMICS – Academics are of great importance to WDMLAX. This is a school first
club program. It is EXPECTED that all players attend their classes regularly and do
all required schoolwork to maintain eligibility throughout the school year.
Education opens doors to the future and therefore, needs to be a priority.
ATTITUDE – Attitude is the more important influence in a player’s success. A
positive attitude will help the player succeed on and off the field. A poor attitude
not only affects the player, but also those around them.
CHARACTER – Development of the individual is more important than winning.
Players will be held accountable for their actions and will contribute to a positive
culture. Their actions will affect their success. Good character will be demonstrated
in all facets of the player’s life. Players will learn to make good decisions in the
development of their character.
EFFORT – Skill-based play through lacrosse is one of the ways that players learn
that it will take effort to be successful in life. Best effort is expected at all times on
and off the lacrosse field.
RESPECT – All players, coaches, and parents WILL respect each other, the rules, the
officials, the opponents, and themselves. No one person is more important than
another. Players will also respect their peers, teachers, school administrators, and
their families.
FUNDAMENTALS – Lacrosse is a skill-based sport, fundamentals play a vital part of
the game. Fundamentals will be practiced every day during the season. Players
wanting to get better and earn playing time do so by practicing fundamentals on
their own time in addition to during practice.
5
Parent Expectations
WDMLAX recognizes the important role parents play in the development of the
athlete. We understand that WDMLAX may not be the right choice for all families.
We expect parents to review this handbook, player rules and expectations, and the
parent expectations below to ensure that the parents and player are fully committed
to WDMLAX prior to completing registration, forms, and making payments for
participation.




Support your son/daughter.
Support the entire team and program.
Support the coaching staff in a positive manner – let the coaches coach.
Encourage your player to practice on their ‘own’ time in addition to
scheduled practices.
Encourage your player to first communication with their coach directly about
their development or any concerns, not through parent-coach
communication.
Respect and adhere to the communication expectations.
Do not interact with coaches and players during games, warm-ups and postgame team discussion.
Please reply in a timely manner to team communications.
Honor the game! Display good sportsmanship at all times!
Eligibility
The following represent the requirements that must be met by a player to be
considered eligible to participate with WDMLAX.
The WDMLAX Board of Directors shall have the right and discretion to refuse
participation to any individual. Participation as a player with WDMLAX is a
privilege, not a right.
All players are required to be individual members of US Lacrosse. A player shall
not participate in any lacrosse related activity with WDMLAX until a US Lacrosse
Individual Membership Registration has been completed, appropriate fee paid to US
Lacrosse, and a copy of the registration and current US Lacrosse number with
expiration date is provided to the Team Manager or player’s coach. The only
exception to this policy is a player that wants to try lacrosse by attending no more
than 4 practices. As long as the potential player submits a completed WDMLAX
Parental Consent Waiver and Release Form prior to the 4 practice trial period, they
may participate in practice only. A copy of this Release Form is included in the
Documents section of this handbook.
6
WDMLAX requires that all incoming players report any outstanding financial
obligations to other US Lacrosse registered organizations. As a member of US
Lacrosse, WDMLAX will not place an individual on our roster until the outstanding
financial obligations with any previous club or program are satisfied and the player
is considered in good standing with that organization.
A player may request a release from WDMLAX to complete with another club by
submitting such request in writing to the Board of Directors. The issuance of a
release by WDMLAX is at the discretion of the Board of Directors. Under no
circumstances will such a release be issued unless the individual has completed all
financial commitment to, and are, in otherwise good standing with WDMLAX at the
time that the release is requested.
Every player must complete four (4) hours of community service each season. This
service will be organized through WDMLAX with multiple options for dates and
types of service. In the past, opportunities included blanket making for the Ronald
McDonald House and acting as Angels in the Outfield for the Kiwanis Miracle
League.
Every player [or their family member(s)] must complete four (4) hours of service to
the fundraising efforts of WDMLAX. These opportunities will be organized through
WDMLAX with multiple options for dates and types of service. In the past
opportunities included stadium clean-up, Pizza Ranch nights, concession stand duty
at area high schools sporting events, and concession duty at other local sporting
event venues. In lieu of this minimum requirement, a donation of $80 may be made
to WDMLAX. Failure to complete the required minimum hours or remit the
donation may result is suspension and/or dismissal from the team.
Participation Guidelines
Additionally, to participate with WDMLAX, players must be eligible to participate in
their local schools’ interscholastic athletic programs. In order to determine the
specific eligibility rules applied to any individual, it will be necessary for the parent
to review their individual school’s student handbook or contact the appropriate
school officials for assistance in making the determination. The Iowa High School
Athletic Association requires that all participants must be under 20 years of age and
shall be enrolled students of the school in good standing.
Typically any student moving/transferring into a new school district who has been
declared ineligible under a prior district’s Student Activity Conduct Code or
equivalent policy will not be eligible for participation in competition until the full
period of ineligibility, as identified by the prior district, has been completed.
WDMLAX must comply with state concussion laws regarding high school
interscholastic athletics.
7
All player fees/dues must be paid in full to participate and be considered in
good financial standing with WDMLAX.
Standard on Academic Eligibility
WDMLAX values academic performance and progress. It is our goal for all athletes
to perform up to their potential in the classroom as well as on the field. In order to
participate in WDMLAX, players must be academically eligible to participate in their
local schools’ interscholastic athletic programs. Proof of eligibility must be
provided (copy of the latest official grading period) by the player to their
coach by March 1, or prior to the beginning of game, whichever is earlier.
Additionally, each player is to submit a list of current classes that have any
major projects due during the season with due dates noted. Eligibility must be
re-evaluated following the completion of any grading period that results in a final
grade being posted to an individual’s academic transcript.
In order to determine the specific academic eligibility rules applied to any
individual, it will be necessary for the parent to review their individual school’s
student handbook or contact the appropriate school officials for assistance in
making the determination. Typically, school standards require the passing of 4
credit courses at all times and the requirement for making adequate progress
towards graduation to remain eligible.
All WDMLAX players are required to maintain a grade point average of 2.0 or
greater in order to be eligible to play. Players will turn in copies of grade reports to
their coach within one week of receiving a grade report from their school. If a
player becomes ineligible to play, the player will be suspended for a minimum of
one game. The head coach will meet with player and/or parents to determine if
further action is necessary.
Ineligibility
The ineligible player is still expected to attend all team functions (such as practices
and games). If a player is declared ineligible two times throughout the season
he/she will be considered for dismissal from the team. A student’s effort, attitude,
and progress will be evaluated and a decision made by the coaching staff regarding
the dismissal. The head coach will have the final ay on these decisions. An ineligible
player affects not only their own playing time, but more importantly the
performance of the entire team. Succeeding academically and athletically will
provide a player with many possibilities in the future.
If a player has a positive attitude towards academics and puts forth their best
effort, they are bound to succeed.
8
Player Rules & Expectations
These policies, rules, and expectations are designed to ensure that each player
receives the best experience possible, while giving maximum effort to the success of
the program. In order to participate as a player with this program, each player must
understand these rules and expectations and know that any violation may lead to
their dismissal from the program.
ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO: Use of alcohol and/or tobacco is strictly prohibited.
Players violating this rule will automatically receive a two game suspension for the
first offense. The second offense during a players’ career will lead to dismissal from
the program.
DRUGS: any offense involving the use of drugs, possession of drugs and/or drug
paraphernalia, or the selling and/or buying drugs, will lead to immediate dismissal
of the player from the program.
SUSPENSION FROM SCHOOL: Any suspension from school will lead to an automatic
doubling of the suspension from lacrosse. Example: If a student is suspended 3 days
from school, they will be suspended 6 days from lacrosse activities.
UNEXCUSED ABSENCES: For every unexcused absence during the school day, the
player will be required to make up that time through extra condition. If the
unexcused absence occurs on the day of a game, the player will not be allowed to
play in that day’s game.
BULLYING, HAZING, HARASSMENT: (see more in Harassment and Bullying
section) Any behavior that is deemed to be hazing, bullying, or harassment will not
be tolerated. These violations will lead to a minimum of a one game suspension for
the first offense. The player will be dismissed from the program for the second
offense.
Any behavior or action deemed detrimental to the WDMLAX program will be
addressed by the coaching staff and/or Board of Directors in a fair and timely
manner. The consequences will match the infraction. The infraction will be
investigated to the fullest reasonable extent.
Players are expected to be geared-up and on the field ready to play or practice at the
scheduled start time. If a player cannot make it to a practice or game on time, or will
miss a game or practice for any reason, they must notify their coach prior to the
event. In the event of unforeseen circumstances, contact must be made as soon as
possible. Failure to make contact will be considered an unexcused absence.
Unexcused absences may result in the player sitting a minimum of one quarter in
the next scheduled game. Additional unexcused absences will be handled at the
discretion of the coaching staff and may include dismissal from the program.
9
Rules, Expectations, & Consequences
1.
Captains will be identified at the beginning of each spring season by the
coaches. Captains are expected to be leaders on and off the field and follow all rules
and expectations. The tone they set dictates how the rest of the team
performs. They should be the first on the field at games and practices, and are
responsible for organizing the warm up routine for both. Captains will perform
double the amount of any individual consequences listed below. Captains may be
removed from their leadership role at any time at the coach’s discretion.
2.
Players are expected to lead by example on and off the field. Players should
arrive to practices and games focused on lacrosse. Appropriate non-lacrosse
conversations must end at the conclusion of warm up stretching. Appropriate
conversations include other sports, academic issues, college, and related
items. Inappropriate conversations are not allowed upon arrival to the game or
practice field – including the parking lot. Inappropriate conversations include
dating, fighting, parties, etc. Failure to comply with this rule will result in full field
(down & back) sprints assessed to the entire team.
3.
Racist, homophobic, anti-religious, and other discriminatory conversations
have no place at our games or practices. Consequences will apply to everyone
engaged in the conversation. The first offense will be a warning. The second offense
will result in full field (down & back) sprints. The third offense will result in
reduced playing time of at least one half. The fourth offense will result in dismissal
from the team. Players should not be discussing politics or religion at games or
practices.
4.
Foul language is not allowed. The league has set serious consequences for use
of the f-bomb, and the team rules will extend that to the s-word, c-word, and bword. If a coach hears a player using foul language at practice, the first offense will
be a warning. The second offense will result in full field (down & back) sprints. The
third offense will result in reduced playing time of at least one half. The fourth
offense will result in dismissal from the team. Players using any of the listed
language upon arrival on game day will face a reduction of potential playing time for
at least one quarter plus three full field (down & back) sprints at the next practice.
5.
This is a team sport. Players are expected to support and encourage their
teammates. Any player that openly and/or publicly degrades a teammate’s play on
game day –including warm ups -will be withheld from play for at least on quarter,
depending on the infraction and will be required to turn in a one hundred word
essay regarding the value of sportsmanship and teamwork to the coaches at the next
practice. Failure to do so will result in suspension at the next game. Any player that
openly and/or publicly degrades a teammate’s play at practice will be required to
10
turn in a fifty word essay on sportsmanship and teamwork prior to the next game;
failure to do so will result in suspension for that game.
6.
This is a team sport. Players are expected to respect their coaches,
teammates, and opponents. Any player that participates in name calling; talking
about a coach, teammate, or opponent in a negative manner; not fully engaging in
warm-ups or practice; or displaying any conduct deemed unsupportive, negative, or
disrespectful will be withheld from play for at least one quarter, depending on the
infraction and will be required to turn in a one hundred word essay regarding the
value of sportsmanship and teamwork to the coaches at the next practice. Failure to
do so will result in suspension at the next game. If the conduct continues the player
may be suspended indefinitely or dismissed from the team.
7.
High School players are required to attend all film and practice
sessions. Absences will only be excused for illnesses or extreme circumstances –
after being approved by the coaching staff. Notification must be made as soon as
possible before practice. Failure to attend practice without an excused absence will
result in 1. A guaranteed loss of playing time of one quarter for each session missed
and, 2. Two full field (down & back) sprints and ten bodybuilders at the next
practice for each day missed.
8.
Players are to be geared up, on the field, and starting warm ups by the stated
practice start time. Warm up laps and stretching should be concluded no later than
ten minutes following practice start time. Five bodybuilders will be assigned to the
team for every minute past that time; ten hillside slaloms will be assigned to the
team for every five minutes past that time. The coaching staff will inform players
once the ten minutes past practice start time is reached. Players that arrive after the
warm up has started will be required to do three full field (down & back) sprints,
unless the coaching staff has been notified prior to practice with a valid reason for
the tardiness.
9.
All players are required to stay at practice and games until the ball search and
field cleanup (player trash and debris removed) are complete. The ball search and
cleanup of the field will occur once we officially break, before any pads and
equipment are removed. Players are not to visit their equipment bags until the ball
search is declared complete. Any player leaving the field before the balls are
accounted for and the field is clean will become responsible for storing equipment
for the remainder of the week and all of the following week. Penalized players will
also do three full field (down & back) sprints at the following practice. This applies
to home and away games.
10.
Assigned players are required to stay at practice and games until all
equipment (goals, cones, tables, etc.) has been returned to the shed. Any assigned
player leaving the field before all of the equipment is put away, the shed is locked,
and the individual with the keys has returned to the field will become responsible
for storing equipment for the remainder of the week and all of the following
11
week. Penalized players will also do three full field (down & back) sprints and ten
body builders at the following practice.
11. Assigned players are expected to arrive one and a half hours prior to the start
time of all home games to set up the field. Assigned players that do not arrive on
time to set up the field, without prior notification and approval will face 1. A
guaranteed loss of playing time of at least one quarter and, 2. Three full field (down
& back) sprints at the following practice. Penalized players will also become
responsible for storing equipment for all of the following week.
12. Players are not allowed to publicly lobby for practice to be canceled or delayed,
regardless of the weather. This is a coaching/administrative decision. Any player
found to be lobbying or otherwise suggesting that practice be canceled or delayed
will be suspended for at least one quarter at the next game and will be required to
do three full field (down & back) sprints and ten bodybuilders. The appropriate
action in this situation is to contact the coaching staff directly via email, Facebook,
or even text with a valid reason for cancellation (ie Valley’s parking lot flooded up to
car doors); “joke” requests (ie it’s too nice out) will be treated as lobbying with the
consequences listed above.
13. Players and parents are not allowed to question the coaches’ decisions in
games or at practice regarding deployment of personnel, positions played, playing
time, method and timing of drills, and other coaching functions. This includes the
substitution box on game day; the coaching staff will coordinate the substitution
order. Players are not allowed to talk back to or disrespect the coaching staff,
captains, or teammates. Failure to adhere to this rule on game day will result in
the player being pulled for at least one quarter of play, depending on the nature and
severity; for serious or late infractions, the consequences will carry over to the next
game and/or practice. Failure to adhere to this rule at practice will result in three
full field (down & back) sprints and ten bodybuilders. Players and parents are
allowed to ask questions for clarification or education purposes.
14. Any player receiving a penalty for a mouth guard infraction will be withheld
from play for the remainder of the quarter in which their penalty ends. Any player
that receives a penalty for talking back to the referee will be withheld from play for
the remainder of the quarter in which their penalty ends. Any captain that receives
either of the above penalties will be withheld from play for the remainder of the half
in which their penalty ends. Players will also do ten bodybuilders per infraction at
the next practice.
15. Any player found to be using alcohol will be suspended immediately for two
games. Any payer found to be using drugs or in possession of drugs or drug
paraphernalia will be dismissed from the program immediately.
12
Games
Players are to report as directed, usually one hour prior to scheduled game time.
Players are expected to wear appropriate warm-ups unless otherwise directed by
the coaching staff. The following are the dress guidelines for 2016:

o Sweatpants or track pants in black, orange, white or gray
 Headwear options include:

o Athletic logo brand in black, orange, white or gray
Harassment, Hazing and Bullying
WDMLAX support only those activities which are constructive, educational, and
ones that contribute to the intellectual and personal development of the athletes
who are members of the program. WDMLAX unequivocally opposes any situation
created intentionally to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment,
harassment or ridicule.
WDMLAX interprets hazing as any act whether physical, mental, emotional, or
psychological, which subjects another person, voluntarily or involuntarily, to
anything that may abuse, mistreat, degrade, humiliate, harass, or intimidate the
person, or which may in any fashion compromise the inherent dignity of the person.
In addition, any requirements by a player or parent which compels another player
or parent to participate in any activity which is against WDMLAX policy or
state/federal law will be defined as hazing.
WDMLAX Athlete Agreement Concerning Hazing
In order to ensure that all player and parents understand what is expected of them
in regard to the Harassment, Hazing, and Bullying policy, all players and parents are
required to provide a signature acknowledgement of the WDMLAX Athlete
Agreement Concerning Hazing Form in order for the player to participant in the
program. A copy of this Agreement is included in the Documents section of this
handbook.
WDMLAX complies with the laws and regulations applied by the local school
districts with the players attend school. As such, the club is bound by the rules and
regulations of the Iowa High School Athletic Association. Violation of Iowa law in
regard to hazing may result in legal criminal/civil prosecution.
13
IOWA HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION HAZING POLICY
The Iowa High School Athletic Association believes all individuals should be treated
with respect and dignity. Students should be able to participate in IHSAA-sponsored
programs in an environment free from any behavior that is intimidating, hostile,
offensive, or dangerous. Each member school is responsible for taking such action
and enacting such policies as may be necessary to address incidents of hazing and to
ensure such conduct is prohibited. Policies enacted by schools should be in
accordance with sections of the Iowa Code that address hazing.
HAZING Iowa Code Section 708.10
1. a. A person commits an act of hazing when the person intentionally or recklessly
engages in any act or acts involving forced activity which endanger the physical
health or safety of a student for the purpose of initiation or admission into, or
affiliation with any organization operating in connection with a school, college, or
university. Prohibited acts include, but are not limited to, any brutality of a physical
nature such as whipping, forced confinement, or any other forced activity which
endangers the physical health or safety of the student.
b. For purposes of this section, "forced activity" means any activity which is a
condition of initiation or admission into, or affiliation with, an organization,
regardless of a student's willingness to participate in the activity.
2. A person who commits an act of hazing is guilty of a simple misdemeanor.
3. A person who commits an act of hazing which causes serious bodily injury to
another is guilty of a serious misdemeanor.
Myths and Facts About Hazing
Myth #1: Hazing is a problem for fraternities and sororities primarily.
Fact: Hazing is a societal problem. Hazing incidents have been frequently
documented in the military, athletic teams, marching bands, religious cults,
professional schools and other types of clubs and/or, organizations. Reports of
hazing activities in high schools are on the rise.
Myth #2: Hazing is no more than foolish pranks that sometimes go awry.
Fact: Hazing is an act of power and control over others --- it is victimization. Hazing
is pre-meditated and NOT accidental. Hazing is abusive, degrading and often lifethreatening.
Myth #3: As long as there’s no malicious intent, a little hazing should be O.K.
Fact: Even if there’s no malicious “intent” safety may still be a factor in traditional
hazing activities that are considered to be “all in good fun.” For example, serious
accidents have occurred during scavenger hunts and kidnapping trips. Besides, what
14
purpose do such activities serve in promoting the growth and development of group
team members?
Myth #4: Hazing is an effective way to teach respect and develop discipline.
Fact: First of all, respect must be EARNED--not taught. Victims of hazing rarely
report having respect for those who have hazed them. Just like other forms of
victimization, hazing breeds mistrust, apathy and alienation.
Myth #5: If someone agrees to participate in an activity, it can’t be considered
hazing.
Fact: In states that have laws against hazing consent of the victim can’t be used as a
defense in a civil suit. This is because even if someone agrees to participate in a
potentially hazardous action it may not be true consent when considering the peer
pressure and desire to belong to the group.
Myth #6: It’s difficult to determine whether or not a certain activity is hazing — it’s
such a gray area sometimes.
Fact: It’s not difficult to decide if an activity is hazing if you use common sense and
ask yourself the following questions:
Make the following inquiries of each activity to determine whether or not it is
hazing.
1) Is alcohol involved?
2) Will active/current members of the group refuse to participate with the new
members and do exactly what they’re being asked to do?
3) Does the activity risk emotional or physical abuse?
4) Is there risk of injury or a question of safety?
5) Do you have any reservation describing the activity to your parents, to a
professor or University official?
6) Would you object to the activity being photographed for the school
newspaper or filmed by the local TV news crew?
If the answer to any of these questions is “yes,” the activity is probably hazing.

WDMLAX Rules, Expectations, & Consequences
1.
Captains will be identified at the beginning of each spring season by the
coaches. Captains are expected to be leaders on and off the field and follow all
rules and expectations.
2.
High School players are expected to lead by example on and off the
field. Players should arrive to practices and games focused on
lacrosse. Appropriate non-lacrosse conversations must end at the conclusion of
warm up stretching. Appropriate conversations include other sports, academic
issues, college, and related items. Inappropriate conversations are not allowed
upon arrival to the game or practice field – including the parking
lot. Inappropriate conversations include dating, fighting, parties, etc. Failure to
comply with this rule will result in full field (down & back) sprints assessed to the
entire team.
3.
Racist, homophobic, anti-religious, and other discriminatory conversations
have no place at our games or practices. Consequences will apply to everybody
engaged in the conversation. The first offense will be a warning. The second
offense will result in full field (down & back) sprints. The third offense will result
in reduced playing time of at least one half. The fourth offense will result in
dismissal from the team. Players should not be discussing politics or religion at
games or practices.
4.
Foul language is not allowed. The league has set serious consequences for
use of the f-bomb, and the team rules will extend that to the s-word, c-word, and
b-word. If a coach hears a player using foul language at practice, the first offense
will be a warning. The second offense will result in full field (down & back)
sprints. The third offense will result in reduced playing time of at least one
half. The fourth offense will result in dismissal from the team. Players using any
of the listed language upon arrival on game day will face a reduction of potential
playing time for at least one quarter plus three full field (down & back) sprints at
the next practice.
19
5.
This is a team sport. Players are expected to support and encourage their
teammates. Any player that openly and/or publicly degrades a teammate’s play on
game day –including warm ups -will be withheld from play for at least on quarter,
depending on the infraction and will be required to turn in a one hundred word
essay regarding the value of sportsmanship and teamwork to the coaches at the
next practice. Failure to do so will result in suspension at the next game. Any
player that openly and/or publicly degrades a teammate’s play at practice will be
required to turn in a fifty word essay on sportsmanship and teamwork prior to the
next game; failure to do so will result in suspension for that game.
6.
This is a team sport. Players are expected to respect their coaches,
teammates, and opponents. Any player that participates in name calling; talking
about a coach, teammate, or opponent in a negative manner; not fully engaging in
warm-ups or practice; or displaying any conduct deemed unsupportive, negative,
or disrespectful will be withheld from play for at least one quarter, depending on
the infraction and will be required to turn in a one hundred word essay regarding
the value of sportsmanship and teamwork to the coaches at the next
practice. Failure to do so will result in suspension at the next game. If the
conduct continues the player may be suspended indefinitely or dismissed from the
team.
7.
High School players are required to attend all film and practice
sessions. Absences will only be excused for illnesses or extreme circumstances –
after being approved by the coaching staff. Notification must be made as soon as
possible before practice. Failure to attend practice without an excused absence
will result in 1. A guaranteed loss of playing time of one quarter for each session
missed and, 2. Two full field (down & back) sprints and ten bodybuilders at the
next practice for each day missed.
8.
Players are to be geared up, on the field, and starting warm ups by the stated
practice start time. Warm up laps and stretching should be concluded no later than
ten minutes following practice start time. Five bodybuilders will be assigned to
the team for every minute past that time; ten hillside slaloms will be assigned to
the team for every five minutes past that time. The coaching staff will inform
players once the ten minutes past practice start time is reached. Players that arrive
after the warm up has started will be required to do three full field (down & back)
sprints, unless the coaching staff has been notified prior to practice with a valid
reason for the tardiness.
20
9.
All players are required to stay at practice and games until the ball search
and field cleanup (player trash and debris removed) are complete. The ball search
and cleanup of the field will occur once we officially break, before any pads and
equipment are removed. Players are not to visit their equipment bags until the ball
search is declared complete. Any player leaving the field before the balls are
accounted for and the field is clean will become responsible for storing equipment
for the remainder of the week and all of the following week. Penalized players
will also do three full field (down & back) sprints at the following practice. This
applies to home and away games.
10.
Assigned players are required to stay at practice and games until all
equipment (goals, cones, tables, etc.) has been returned to the shed. Any assigned
player leaving the field before all of the equipment is put away, the shed is locked,
and the individual with the keys has returned to the field will become responsible
for storing equipment for the remainder of the week and all of the following
Three full field
(down & back) sprints at the following practice. Penalized players will also
become responsible for storing equipment for all of the following week.
12. Players are not allowed to publicly lobby for practice to be canceled or
delayed, regardless of the weather. This is a coaching/administrative
decision. Any player found to be lobbying or otherwise suggesting that practice
be canceled or delayed will be suspended for at least one quarter at the next game
and will be required to do three full field (down & back) sprints and ten
bodybuilders. The appropriate action in this situation is to contact the coaching
staff directly via email, Facebook, or even text with a valid reason for cancellation
(i.e. Valley’s parking lot flooded up to car doors); “joke” requests (i.e. it’s too nice
out) will be treated as lobbying with the consequences listed above.
Failure to adhere to this rule on game day will result in
21
the player being pulled for at least one quarter of play, depending on the nature
and severity; for serious or late infractions, the consequences will carry over to the
next game and/or practice. Failure to adhere to this rule at practice will result in
three full field (down & back) sprints and ten bodybuilders. Players and parents
are allowed to ask questions for clarification or education purposes. If continued
disrespect is shown by any player to their coach(s), captains, or teammates, they
may be suspended or dismissed from the team.
14. Any player receiving a penalty for a mouth guard infraction will be withheld
from play for the remainder of the quarter in which their penalty ends. Any player
that receives a penalty for talking back to the referee will be withheld from play
for the remainder of the quarter in which their penalty ends. Any captain that
receives either of the above penalties will be withheld from play for the remainder
of the half in which their penalty ends. Players will also do ten bodybuilders per
infraction at the next practice.
15. Any player found to be using alcohol will be suspended immediately for two
games. Any payer found to be using drugs or in possession of drugs or drug
paraphernalia will be dismissed from the program immediately.
Every player must complete four (4) hours of community service each
season. This service will be organized through WDMLAX with multiple options for
dates and types of service. In the past, opportunities included blanket making for
the Ronald McDonald House and acting as Angels in the Outfield for the Kiwanis
Miracle League.
16.
17.
Every player [or their family member(s)] must complete four (4) hours of
service to the fundraising efforts of WDMLAX. These opportunities will be
organized through WDMLAX with multiple options for dates and types of service. In
the past opportunities included stadium cleanup, Pizza Ranch nights, concession
stand duty at area high schools sporting events, and concession duty at other local
sporting event venues. In lieu of this minimum requirement, a donation of $80 may
be made to WDMLAX. Failure to complete the required minimum hours or remit the
donation may result is suspension and/or dismissal from the team.

*These rules are applicable to all players affiliated with the West Des Moines
Lacrosse Club. Coaching staff may use their discretion for alternate consequences
for infractions to these rules and expectations. Any player who believes his/her
privilege to participate has been restricted without good cause has the right to
immediately appeal the decision. Please see the West Des Moines Lacrosse Club
handbook for the Disciplinary Appeal Procedures.
These WDMLAX Rules, Expectations, and Consequences must be signed by
player AND parent and submitted each season prior to the player being eligible
to practice with and/or play for West Des Moines Lacrosse Club.

WDMAX Athlete Agreement Concerning Hazing
WDMLAX support only those activities which are constructive, educational, and ones that contribute
to the intellectual and personal development of the athletes who are members of the program.
WDMLAX unequivocally opposes any situation created intentionally to produce mental or physical
discomfort, embarrassment, harassment or ridicule.
WDMLAX interprets hazing as any act whether physical, mental, emotional, or psychological, which
subjects another person, voluntarily or involuntarily, to anything that may abuse, mistreat,
degrade, humiliate, harass, or intimidate the person, or which may in any fashion compromise the
inherent dignity of the person. In addition, any requirements by a player or parent which compels
another player or parent to participate in any activity which is against WDMLAX policy or
state/federal law will be defined as hazing.
Actions and activities which are prohibited include, but are not limited to, the following:
 Any type of initiation or other activity where there is an expectation of individuals joining a particular team to
participate in behavior designed to humiliate, degrade, or abuse them regardless of the person’s
willingness to participate.
 Forcing, requiring, or pressuring an individual to consume alcohol or any other substance.
 Forcing, requiring, or pressuring an individual to shave any part of the body, including hair on the head.
 Any requirement or pressure on an individual to participate in any activity which is illegal, perverse, publicly
indecent, contrary to general morals and/or beliefs, e.g. public profanity, indecent or lewd conduct, or sexual
gestures in public.
 Urinating on an individual or subjecting an individual to physical conduct with any other bodily fluid or
hazardous materials.
 Required eating of anything an individual would refuse to eat otherwise.
 Any activity or action that creates a risk to the health, safety, or property of the greater community.
 Assigning or endorsing pranks such as stealing or harassment or another organization.
 Expecting or pressuring individuals to participate in an activity in which the full organization/program is not
willing to participate.
 Physical abuse of any kind.
 Nudity at any time.
 Paddling, beating, or otherwise permitting a person to otherwise hit others.
 Morally degrading/humiliating games or other activity that makes an individual the object of amusement,
ridicule, or intimidation.
 Subjecting an individual to cruel and unusual psychological conditions.
 Intentionally damaging the equipment or making it un-useable or likely to degrade the owner’s performance.
I have read the policy about hazing and understand that if I am in violation of this policy I will be
subject to discipline as adjudicated by the WDMLAX Disciplinary Committee that may include, but is
not limited to, suspension from the team and/or dismissal from the team. In addition, I am aware
that the team may be subject to group discipline that can include, but is not limited to, team
probation, cancellation of individual contests and/or cancellation of the entire season.
I understand that I am required to know, understand and follow the rules, policies, and procedures
related to hazing as defined in the WDMLAX Player and Parent Handbook – 2016 Season.
