Photo Essay Evaluation
BY KYLE BOTEN
Characteristics of the Genre
 The characteristics I focused on were to make the audience feel uplifting
and joyous. I also wanted the audience to feel as though they were
traveling the globe at sporting events.
 My audience for the piece was my GT class and teacher of the class and
(possibly in the future) parents.
 Some mentor texts that inspired me to create this were biographies of
famous sport players and books of different cultures studies.
Writing Process
 The idea for this piece started
when I was looking at photo
essays online when I saw one for
food people eat across the globe.
I thought an around the world
type essay would be a great idea.
I also read and article about
Brazil winning a soccer
tournament when the two
articles combined into my photo
essay.
 I had to research sports from
corners of the globe and learn
how they were played by using
Google. I found my images by
figuring out the name of sports
and Google-ing the sport name. I
also searched for uplifting music
to fit my genre.
Technology
Technology skills I applied during this project were learning how to use
PhotoStory 3 and learning what kinds of music fit moods. For example, when I
wanted my slides to feel uplifting, I didn’t want to make it sound like the
commercials for abused animals. I had to learn what was best fitting by
searching uplifting on FreePlayMusic.com. When I was learning how to use
PhotoStory 3, I had to think of it as something other than a new program, but
one that I know how to work.
Affective Development
I learned that I like sports more than I really thought. For example, I would
only play tag and think that football was a sport for jocks. Know I know that
sports are actually one of my core values. I have now realized that I enjoy
photos more than I used to. For example, when I looked at photos, I saw them
as pictures and not moments.
Evaluation
I think my work was very amazing and that the effort I put it paid off at the
end of it all. In 1 to 10 scale I’d say 8.5.
I am proud of my musical choices because they were very happy and
enjoyable. I am proud of these because it took a lot of time to find the music
needed
Some of the challenges I faced were narrating while many others were too. I
had to wait my turn even when others didn’t notice I was working.
For my next project, I’d like to use PhotoStory again but to summarize a book
(just an idea) with pictures and narration. I would like this because while
PhotoStory 3 is fresh in my mind, and I’m interested in pictures and reading
novels.
