Step IV Infrastructure update STFC Tim Hayler Eddie Holtom Norbert Collomb Graham Stokes 14th December 2011 MICO170 meeting Tim Hayler 1 MICE major Infrastructure milestones Task Baseline Status Downstream spectrometer solenoid base plate installation complete 31/12/11 Complete He window manufacture complete 30/6/12 Detail drawings complete, currently out for Quotation. TOF cage and Virostek plate bracket design complete 31/12/11 Detail drawings complete, currently out for Quotation AFC rolling platforms tested 31/12/11 Complete Radiation shield manufacture and testing complete 30/3/12 Design review held at the Technical board meeting 21st November, some open issues. Ready for AFC & SS installation 30/3/12 Depends on the MICE hall schedule of events Tim Hayler 2 Downstream spectrometer solenoid base plate installation complete All step IV base plates installed: Upstream spectrometer base plate (in beam and out of beam) AFC base plate (in beam and out of beam) Downstream spectrometer base plate (in beam only, there will be no possibility of moving the downstream spectrometer out of beam) Tim Hayler 3 He window manufacture, currently out for quotation Tim Hayler 4 TOF cage and Virostek plate bracket design complete Detail drawings of the bracket design are complete. We have worked closely with the Spectrometer team to make sure all the necessary compliance is in the design e.g. The way the brackets fasten to the Spectrometer and positioning of the TOF cage. Currently going through the tendering process. Expect delivery in march 2012 Tim Hayler 5 TOF cage and Virostek plate test support stand Support frame to test: • The bracket assembly to the TOF cage and Virostek plate. • TOF detector assembly, movement of the detector on the sliding mechanism. • The mechanical arm for removing the split ring •Expect the need to do some re-work on the Virostek plates, split rings, drill and tap holes, some machining Tim Hayler Expect to start the build in March 2012 6 AFC rolling platform tests complete Testing specification for the MICE Moving Platform: • Ensure the platform raises and lowers and moves horizontally • Leak check/pressure drop check (Hydraulic system) • Ensure the platform raises sufficiently to permit moving the unit without interference • Visual inspection of components under load regarding deformation • There are no unforeseen failures of components • The moving of the platform along its intended path Tim Hayler 7 AFC rolling platform tests complete 4 tonne load test done at Daresbury Lab Hydraulic jacks raise the platform. Roller stakes move the platform in and out of the beam. Final testing needs to be done in the MICE hall early 2012 Tim Hayler 8 The Radiation Shield The review presentation is on the technical board website, meeting minutes 21st November 2011. http://mice.iit.edu/tb/Meetings/2011-11-21/ Tim Hayler 9 Actions from the radiation shield review Action Date Responsible Status A test plan devised for all operating scenarios (in vacuum) 02/Jan/2012 Norbert Collomb WIP Manual method 02/Jan/2012 to open and close the shutter doors Norbert Collomb WIP Add radiation monitor to the design Tim Hayler and Norbert Collomb Need specification from the collaboration 01/Feb/2012 Tim Hayler 10 Spectrometer Solenoid stand Support frame design is being worked on at RAL with close collaboration with the Spectrometer team Tim Hayler 11 Spectrometer Solenoid stand The Spectrometer team will now provide the SS with just the four support feet shown. This helps with shipping issues. The frame will be built in the UK and installed in the MICE hall as part of the Step IV build Tim Hayler 12 Local magnetic shielding for the MICE hall compressors and beyond Prototype being made in mild steel for a fit check Tim Hayler 13 Ready for AFC and SS installation 30/03/2011 • The readiness date for the AFC and SS installation is very much dependant on the MICE hall schedule of events. • We want to install all the moving platforms for step IV • Can we move the KL detector downstream to progress the Engineering build in the first SS position? First raised at the TB, 21st Nov meeting, slides by Ken Long http://mice.iit.edu/tb/Meetings/2011-11-21/ • Are we taking beam in the first quarter of 2012? • What is the Hydrogen project doing? • What other work is scheduled for the first quarter 2012? • In building up the Infrastructure we would expect unknowns, items lost and unforeseen events. It would be very useful to start the work in January. Tim Hayler 14
