Why I want to interview Korey
As an MMA fighter, personal trainer and franchise owner of one of New Zealand hottest gym chains
(Snap Fitness), Korey Gibson is someone who knows a lot about motivation. I was interested in
exploring this motivation and the role it has played in Koreys’ success regarding both his personal
and professional career. As a gym owner and long-time personal trainer I was also keen to get
Koreys’ take on the factors that contribute to, and take away from, building and maintaining
motivation.

Korey Gibson grew up living in some of the poorest, toughest areas in New Zealand, where gangs
and street fights were common. He began playing rugby with the Bell Block Marist Dragons when he
was 10, learning at an early age that the thing he liked most about it was tackling! By 15 he was
playing with the seniors, and then the National League Competition by 17. In 1996 he captained New
Zealand to a win over Australia, owning the field over experienced Australian State of Origin players.
At the age of 19, at which time he was considered one of the fittest men in the Auckland Warriors,
he was diagnosed with cancer, resulting in surgery and years of post follow up scares.
In 2001, and having experienced numerous injuries – including spinal injuries – that he had
continued to push through, Korey gave up Rugby League in favor of a shot at boxing. After winning
two amateur fights, his work commitments forced him to stop, until two years later when he again
tried his hand at fighting, only this time under Steve Compton who, recognising his talent, sent him
to Integrated Martial Arts to train with Danny Higgins. He had his first MMA fight in October 2006,
since which he has remained undefeated across four fights.
Korey is a true inspiration to all MMA fighters and fans alike, and on November 9, 2007, he
succesfully achieved one of his goals by capturing the Australian Lightweight title at Warriors Realm
11.

achieve.

Music - reggae music and Maori music / band - Bob Marley & the Wailers, NZ reggae bands, Trinity
Roots and anything with a positive message / song - hhhmmm tough one to answer but I really love
listening to "Aotearoa" by Trinity Roots or "Brothers In Arms" by Dire Straits (the week leading into a
fight especially). But I can't forget my cage entry song - "Burning" By Kora.
What is your biggest fear?
Failure.
Do you believe "never giving up" is the difference between making it and not making it in any sport?
It's definitely a big part of it and life in general, I also think that enjoyment and having fun whilst
your on your journey or at training is just as important.
Have you ever failed at anything? If yes how did you overcome this?
I don't know if I have failed at anything completely, but I have definitely made a lot of mistakes in
life, business and in sports. I don't dwell on them at all, I let them go, learn from them and try and
come up with strategies to ensure the same mistake doesn't happen again and forward movement is
maintained.

I don't know brother, I think I was born with it. I can tell you that as a young boy I remember telling

Quest open again after the earthquakes (closed for 7 months now) and see what's on the horizon.
What title would you like to win?
NZ or South Pacific Supremacy Lightweight Title.
People you would like to thank?
Dan Higgins and Steve Compton - two great teachers and motivators - Kia ora Coaches! I'd also like
to thank my awesome staff and all the family friends that have given me a hand since returning to
NZ. A special thanks to Dad for organising the build of our brand new house, and to my bro Hayden
Dreaver "Master" in Kaikoura for teaching me about bush culture and living off the land.
Anything further you would like to add?
Yes another major focus of mine at present is studying my Te Reo and to become a fluent speaker. I
would also like add that NZ MMA is on the rise, we just need to ensure it maintains a professional
approach and strong "behind the scenes" systems that ensure we grow as fast as the sport is
growing worldwide.
