2015 Regional Updates on Southeastern Vermont’s CEDS and “Vital Projects” May 26th Londonderry May 27th Wilmington May 28th Brattleboro & Bellows Falls What is a CEDS? • Developed using a federally outlined process • Assess assets, opportunities, strengths and weaknesses using data and public input • Develops Goals • Creates regional, strategic plan for growing the economy • Includes and ranks public, private and nonprofit projects that will make progress towards goals How does a CEDS get updated • CEDS was accepted in July 2014 • CEDS are five year plans – ours runs through July 2019 • Updated Annually • In 2018 we will redo the whole CEDS development process SeVEDS (coordinates regional CEDS development) History: Started in 2007 as a small group looking to improve broadband and cell service Mission: To reverse the economic decline of our region. Vision: Southeastern Vermont will have an economy that generates long-term growth and prosperity and that improves our quality of life and sustains our quality of place. SE Vermont average wage comparison with neighboring States reveals that the region is at a significant disadvantage in attracting and retaining a skilled workforce due its lower average wage. Objective 4: Increase the Size and Quality of the Workforce CEDS Objectives OBJECTIVE 5: Retain and attract younger talent through engagement linkages, lifestyle amenities, and meaningful career opportunities. OBJECTIVE 6: Develop immediate VY specific workforce and site impact mitigation strategies prior to the 2014 closure of the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant. CEDS Projects • • In 2013 52 projects were submitted throughout the region from public, private and non-profit entities. In 2014 42 projects were submitted The CEDS selection committee reviewed and assessed projects by the SeVEDS goals and strategies • • All projects are included in the CEDS 12 projects were selected as Vital Projects CEDS Vital Projects 1. 2. 3. 4. 2015 Vital Projects: Bellows Falls Area Development Corporation: NEW Island Redevelopment project will remediate approximately 5 acres of downtown brownfields sites into useable industrial space SeVEDS Workforce: Job Board for employers in Windham and Bennington Counties will help build the talent pipeline for Windham Region Employers UPDATED Ironwood Brand, PreCraft, STIX: Build a rapid prototyping facility at existing shop for prefab high performance building envelopes and resilient mechanical systems UPDATED BDCC: extend electric water and sewer to new industrial regional sites UPDATED CEDS Vital Projects 5. BDCC: assess existing key elements of innovation ecosystem, determine missing elements, research models for missing elements and development of metrics for evaluating success UPDATED 6. BDCC/SeVEDS: Southern Vermont Sustainable Recruitment Project for employers and tourism entities – connects to Job Board UPDATED 7. Sustainable Energy Outreach Network (SEON): The Board of Directors of the SEON is looking for funding to offset two years of operational expenses and non-employee compensation in support of the current and future activities of the organization. NEW 8. Windham Child Care Association: Build a more sustainable childcare system through innovative shared practices to increase overall program quality and earnings, workforce development for childcare workers. UPDATED CEDS Vital Projects 9. Strolling of the Heifers: Southeastern Vermont Food and Agricultural Innovation Center at the Robert H. Gibson River Garden, 157 Main Street, Brattleboro UPDATED 10. Storm Petral, LLC: Storm Petral released two web based software applications in the Spring of 2014. Tempest-GEMS facilitates the financial recovery of governmental agencies and key non-profits after impact from a natural disaster. It manages federally funded reconstruction and recovery grants. NEW 11. Rich Earth Institute: Creating a sustainable, regional, urine recycling system NEW 12.
