H.E.A.R.T.S. Mission Statement
Our mission as peers is to support one another as people who are challenged by the daily effects of living with,
coping with, and recovering from mental health issues. Everyone will be encouraged to develop relationships
that will enable and empower each other’s worldview. In addition, our aim is to develop greater awareness of
personal and relational patterns, to support and challenge each other through peer support, self-advocacy,
empowerment, and education. Our ultimate goal is to achieve recovery and ongoing wellness.
What is Wellness Recovery Action Plan?
Wellness Recovery Action Plan or (W.R.A.P) is a structured system to monitor uncomfortable and distressing
feelings and behaviors and through planned responses, reducing modifying or eliminating them. It also includes
plans for responses from others when you cannot make decisions, take care of yourself or keep yourself safe. ©
Mary Ellen Copeland
What is Intentional Peer Support?
Intentional Peer Support or (I.P.S.) is a way of thinking about purposeful relationships. It is a process where
both (or a group of people) use the relationship to look at things from new angles, develop greater awareness of
personal and relational patterns, and to support and challenge each other as we try new things. I.P.S. is used in
crisis respite (alternatives to psychiatric hospitalization), by peers, mental health professionals, families, friends,
and community-based organizations. © Shery Mead

Ken’s Corner
Hello to my fellow H.E.A.R.T.S. Members and Participants. I hope this finds you doing
well and feeling good today. How is everyone doing with your New Year’s resolutions? Well
my New Year resolutions this year are to eat healthier foods, and joined a gym and to
actually use it. I want to create an exercise routine for myself and tone myself up so I can live
a longer healthier life.
Now with that said I hope you will join us in our Health movement we have with Greater
Nashua Mental Health Center of Greater Nashua (formerly known as Community Council),
the Lamprey Health Clinic, and us H.E.A.R.T.S. Peer Support Center. This is a great collaboration of
community services working together for the good of consumers who want and deserve to live better and longer
healthier productive lives in our communities.
So Whole Health Action Planning Series will restart again starting Feb. 4th and continue each Monday
9:30am to 11am here at H.E.A.R.T.S. if you need a ride just give us a call early in the morning before 9am and
we can assist you.
We are starting back the smoking reduction classes every Tuesdays and Thursdays 1:30pm to 2:30pm so if
-3-
you missed us a couple of weeks we are back and ready to have fun together. If you need a ride let have a
conversation to see if we can accommodate your needs. We are still enjoying the walking group on Wednesdays
and Fridays at the indoor track at the new YMCA please come join us we have a blast together. We still are
enjoying Erin (she rocks) and her Cooking / Nutrition class on Wednesdays here at H.E.A.R.T.S. right before
we go on our walk and that from 9:30am till 10:30am. We make some really tasty food so come join us and
again if you need a ride call us early enough so we can get you here.
We also have Ask a Nurse with Nurse Sally she’s so great. We were having such a big turn out with her we
decided to break the group into men’s discussions and woman’s discussions. We are now going to be changing
the times but not the day to be in the afternoon instead of the morning. So Sally the Nurse will still be coming
on Tuesday afternoons. Please check the schedule to confirm the exact times.
We are looking into consolidating our Creative Writing class with a new Poem class. We would like to know
if folks are interested in any other Educational subjects to further your knowledge, or prepare for your GED.
Just let us know your needs and we will assist you with those needs. We will do one on one, or a small class
room setting.
We are starting up our Job Club again I believe it will be on Tuesdays from 11am to 12pm so come join us
and let’s get ready to work.
Thank you all for your support and taking ownership here at H.E.A.R.T.S. You are the reason we are here
and continue to prosper.
Ken Lewis, your grateful Director
Tom’s Corner
On very short notice (2 days) I was given the opportunity to attend the second WRAP
Around the World Conference in Oakland, CA. This conference is sponsored by The
Copeland Center. I will have much more to say about the conference in my corner next
month, I know that this will be of great disappointment to most of you, but I want to keep all
of you in suspense.
For our educational group this month we are very fortunate to have two representatives of
Senator Sheehan’s office to come speak to our members. They will be speaking about their Constituent Services
and Outreach programs, to name just a couple Judicial/Legal Matters, State Government and Federal Agencies.
And speaking of Valentine’s Day it’s a great time to tell your loved ones how much you love them, including
your pets, fish and plants. If you’re a rose buyer as I am, it’s just like Christmas and buying toys, buy them the
day after. Instead of paying $75.00/dozen you will pay $25.00/dozen.
I won’t be having a joke this month; I hope that you don’t mind.
Although I will tell you I just can’t keep up with technology. I thought that I was up to date at home with my
electronic stuff until I tried to dial 911 and found out that my phone does not have an 11. Wouldn’t you just
know it? OH well back to Best Buy.
I want to congratulate everyone for keeping your New Year’s resolutions, great job!
Well I guess I have bored you enough.
Tom

The H.E.A.R.T.S. Board of Directors hopes everyone had a Happy New Years. The
Board got a lot accomplished during the first six months of Fiscal year 2013, significant
fund raising, and we have dealt with a multitude of issues. The final six months will be
-4-
very busy as well, reviewing procedural manuals, and revising them where applicable.
For some Board Members, as well as myself, this six months will mark the end of our three year terms on June
30, 2013. I speak for all of us on the Board when I say it has been a great honor to have been entrusted by the
Membership to represent them.
