Good morning Dr. Lowery,
How are you? I hope well.
I was emailing to ask if you knew of any seniors and/or grad students that are about to
graduate (or already did) that are seeking a career in the commercial industry designing
structures? My company, Matrix Structural Engineers, is located in Houston and we are actively
looking to hire 2-3 young engineers. Obviously, they would need to be technically sound, but
more than that, we're looking for self-starters, people that can communicate effectively and
also people with a personality/sense of humor.

Last year, we had much success with our Aggie intern. We are again looking for a summer intern
to serve on our Aviation Team in Frisco, Texas. Garver is a multi-disciplined engineering,
planning, and environmental services firm with offices throughout the southern United States.
The engineering intern would be responsible for assisting the team with civil engineering designs
for airport projects, including improvements to runways, taxiways, aprons, airfield grading and
drainage, and other airport construction related projects. The ideal candidate is familiar with
AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office products. The most ideal candidate is from the Dallas-Fort
Worth area, or has interest in working in the area after graduation. We are looking for a student
who plans on graduating by December 2013 or earlier.
Garver is rapidly growing in Texas and there are many opportunities for young engineers. We
are hoping to hire someone with a strong interest in entering the aviation field as a consulting

Cole is a rapidly growing civil engineering, surveying, planning and landscape architecture firm

I am a former grad student of TAMU (I completed my Masters of Engineering in Water
Resources in August 2010). My company has published an open requisition for an
Environmental Specialist. It will be in the Environmental Department of my firm and
concentrate mostly on air permitting for Oil and Gas sites. The majority of our work is in Texas
and Louisiana but we work in shale plays throughout the US as well.

Enjoyed our conversation yesterday. Things are certainly changing in Engineering at TAMU. I guess that
you have seen a lot of that in your career there and you have much to be proud of. I still can’t get over
the projection of 25,000 Engineering students. I’m also intrigued by the distance learning comment.
As I mentioned yesterday, Halff Associates has openings for a few May graduates, mostly for our offices
in Dallas, Richardson, Frisco and Georgetown. Our needs are General Civil in all of these offices and
Structural with a Masters in Richardson. I would greatly appreciate you sending an e-mail out to your

L^3 note - Also, some clarification on their ability to hire international students, and more:
Datum is looking for engineers graduating with a Master’s focused in Structural Engineering. Strong
coursework and grades are important (3.0 GPA would be the absolute minimum, but I would expect to
see better than that). The prospects should have an interest and desire to work on building structures
(with architects). No specific experience is necessary, although it is always a plus to see some
construction or design internships. If nothing else, this helps the student understand what the
job/industry is like and shows us where their interests might lie.
The hardest thing for us to evaluate, often times, is a student’s initiative. It is important that the
candidate be motivated and able to think about things independently, while also having good
tendencies to check in for guidance. There is a balance here.
Strong communication skills are very important too.
We will hire non-citizens who have proper work authorization. But know that we hire with a long-term
perspective – hoping that things will work out and they will stay with us a long time. I don’t want to hire
anyone with a short shelf life or horizon for staying here in Texas.

Ports Project Engineer:
HDR is seeking a qualified individual to join a group of experts in the Ports and Maritime group
as a Project Engineer. This individual will participate with teams to design small to large
projects (construction values typically from $500K to $100M) and primary focus will be on
structural, geotechnical and general civil design elements of projects. Primary responsibility will
involve performing design tasks on projects ranging from limited complexity and scope to those
including complex features. Efforts will be guided by senior level engineers and management.
Duties will include:

technical specifications
 Construction field observations to verify general conformance with contract documents
 Production of documents (studies/reports, designs, details, sketches, opinions of costs)

in publication of technical articles will be a secondary expectation of this role.
The ideal candidate will have a good mechanical aptitude and prior work experience to illustrate

aptitude. Good to excellent oral and written communications skills will be required for
interaction between peers, management and other design and production staff.
Experience/Minimum Requirements: 0 to 4 years of experience involving similar work
described above, Master of Science Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or foreign
equivalent), Engineer in Training license or ability to obtain within six months.
Current knowledge of linear, non-linear, large displacement, high end structural analysis and
soil-structure interaction analysis and design software is mandatory. Knowledge and ability to

Mr. Lee Lowrey Jr.:
I am working on a new project in Bryan for the Texas Avenue Medical Center, which is
actually an addiction treatment facility. My current design includes the installation of a
pond with two buildings hanging over the water. We want the center to be as peaceful
and environmentally natural as possible given the small space we have to work with.
Since 1999 I owned a marine design and construction company on Lake Livingston
called Waterside Construction & Design, which I sold in 2011.
Since then I have been doing other things but have been constantly asked to design
projects for people.
So when I was asked by doctor Rany Cherian to design the expansion for her clinic I
agreed and formed a new company, Shoretech Marine Consulting LLC.
I am looking for a young engineer that can approve, stamp and sign design drawings for
permitting of my projects, especially the commercial ones.
The engineer that I worked with previously, since 1988 anyway, is now retired at 83
years old.
I would like to work with someone from A&M if at all possible. If you can help me find
someone I would appreciate it. I have never approached looking for an engineer in this
fashion before so if I am doing in wrong please let me know.
My son-in-law and doctor Cherian's son, nephew, and apparently several other family
members are either students or recent graduates of A&M. So we would like to "keep it
in the family" so to speak.

Hello –
I am a 1983 graduate in Building Construction and my son is a 2011 graduate in Construction
Science. One of the companies I help in Ft. Worth is in need of an engineer and I thought of the
department as we make our search. The company is Nortex Engineering and we specialize in
residential foundation engineering and framing engineering. Our clients range from custom
single family builders to production builders and apartment builders. It is almost 100% slab on
grade designing to the PTI standards (Post Tension Institute).
It is actually pretty basic “stuff”. We have a crew of detailers that have everything in the
computer system that does the design and placement of beams and cables. The engineer reviews
the completed drawings, works on staying current with all of the municipalities, and helps
manage the staff.
The ideal situation for us would be to find a retired or semi-retired P.E. who would not need to
work a full week. He or she could work a few hours a day or a few days per week, etc. We can
be pretty flexible.
This can be a very lucrative situation for the right person. No headaches from the administrative
or management side, but remain an active engineer and “stay in the game”.

I hope all is well for you and that things are going good for the Civil Department. It has been too
long since I’ve been back to the Civil building and had a chance to visit everyone.
I’m writing to you because we have an opening at the area office in Liberty for an EIT coming
up soon. The job duties would include developing routine maintenance contracts, inspecting
construction, assisting in plan development, and any additional day to day duties as they come

I am looking for Civil Engineer graduates and interns to work with our design group to map new
and existing water parks. Schlitterbahn is actively growing and changing its focus to a year round
park system.
Looking for one full time civil engineer with 1-4 years of experience who understands primary
utility distribution, roads, parking lots and grading along pedestrian walkways. This person will
be primarily responsible for managing site planning data and work with our master planners.
They will also be required to operate and manage data from a gps data collector. Other duties
may include construction staking. The data changes rapidly so this person will have to work
within an aggressive construction and design environment.
Also looking for 1-4 part-time civil engineering interns who know AutoCAD and can operate a
GPS data collector to produce as-built drawings of existing parks. These interns will work
closely with the above mentioned civil engineering staff person.

AutoCAD and/or MicroStation design software. Candidate will be expected to decipher Civil site
backgrounds, work with nested External Reference Files (Xrefs), adhere to company drafting
standards, and create design details from sketches and manufacturers data-sheets. The
position requires daily interface with in-house design and engineering staff, staying current with
CAD technology and techniques, and other related tasks as assigned. Technical focus of work
will include the application of Civil Engineering to site development, industrial facilities, and
municipal infrastructure including design of roadways, drainage facilities, site grading, water and
sanitary sewer utilities.
Requirements
Candidate must possess a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or
related discipline and have passed the EIT exam. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office tools
including Word, and Excel is required. Good verbal and written communication skills are also
important.
The environment at TRC is fast paced, with numerous overlapping projects and assignments.
Candidate must be flexible, well organized, accountable, and able to work successfully with
multiple project teams and personalities.

Entry level Civil Engineer, with 0-1 year experience, needed in the Arlington, TX office of TRC. Candidates
