1/2/13 Good morning Dr. Lowery, How are you? I hope well. I was emailing to ask if you knew of any seniors and/or grad students that are about to graduate (or already did) that are seeking a career in the commercial industry designing structures? My company, Matrix Structural Engineers, is located in Houston and we are actively looking to hire 2-3 young engineers. Obviously, they would need to be technically sound, but more than that, we're looking for self-starters, people that can communicate effectively and also people with a personality/sense of humor. Any students you can think of that would fall into this category? If so, please shoot me an email and let me know! I'll be headed to the Career Fair in a few weeks, but it'd be nice to get a heads up beforehand, since we'll be on campus interviewing that same week. Please let me know, and see you soon hopefully! If any interest pops up, please have them check out www.matrixstructural.com and/or email me at spayne@matrixstructural.com. Thanks! --Stephanie Payne, '08 Dr. Lowery, Last year, we had much success with our Aggie intern. We are again looking for a summer intern to serve on our Aviation Team in Frisco, Texas. I am now working for Datum Engineers a structural engineering firm based in Texas which strives to empower the architectural vision of its clients. A few of our most notable projects include: the Irving Convention Center, the Perot Museum, the New Central Austin Library, the Parkland Hospital, and the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington to name a few. Strong coursework and grades are important (3.0 GPA would be the absolute minimum, but I would expect to see better than that). The prospects should have an interest and desire to work on building structures (with architects). No specific experience is necessary, although it is always a plus to see some construction or design internships. If nothing else, this helps the student understand what the job/industry is like and shows us where their interests might lie. The hardest thing for us to evaluate, often times, is a student’s initiative. It is important that the candidate be motivated and able to think about things independently, while also having good tendencies to check in for guidance. There is a balance here. Strong communication skills are very important too. We will hire non-citizens who have proper work authorization. But know that we hire with a long-term perspective – hoping that things will work out and they will stay with us a long time. I don’t want to hire anyone with a short shelf life or horizon for staying here in Texas. Thanks, Michael Greetings from the Illinois Department of Transportation! My current design includes the installation of a pond with two buildings hanging over the water. We want the center to be as peaceful and environmentally natural as possible given the small space we have to work with. Since 1999 I owned a marine design and construction company on Lake Livingston called Waterside Construction & Design, which I sold in 2011. Since then I have been doing other things but have been constantly asked to design projects for people. So when I was asked by doctor Rany Cherian to design the expansion for her clinic I agreed and formed a new company, Shoretech Marine Consulting LLC. I am looking for a young engineer that can approve, stamp and sign design drawings for permitting of my projects, especially the commercial ones. The engineer that I worked with previously, since 1988 anyway, is now retired at 83 years old. I would like to work with someone from A&M if at all possible. If you can help me find someone I would appreciate it. I have never approached looking for an engineer in this fashion before so if I am doing in wrong please let me know. My son-in-law and doctor Cherian's son, nephew, and apparently several other family members are either students or recent graduates of A&M. So we would like to "keep it in the family" so to speak. The company is Nortex Engineering and we specialize in residential foundation engineering and framing engineering. Our clients range from custom single family builders to production builders and apartment builders. It is almost 100% slab on grade designing to the PTI standards (Post Tension Institute). It is actually pretty basic “stuff”. We have a crew of detailers that have everything in the computer system that does the design and placement of beams and cables. The engineer reviews the completed drawings, works on staying current with all of the municipalities, and helps manage the staff. The ideal situation for us would be to find a retired or semi-retired P.E. who would not need to work a full week. He or she could work a few hours a day or a few days per week, etc. We can be pretty flexible. This can be a very lucrative situation for the right person. No headaches from the administrative or management side, but remain an active engineer and “stay in the game”. If you know of anyone that might be interested, please let me know. Things are looking very good right now for me personally & professionally. My company is very busy and looking to fill a few positions. I would greatly appreciate your distribution of the below job listings and brief company description to your mailing list! H2B, Inc. is hiring! We are a small Civil/Structural Engineering company located in the Houston Heights area. H2B is a Service Disabled Veteran Owned business, so we are able to qualify for some governmental projects that require diverse certifications. The company offers great benefits and a flexible work schedule with an understanding of the need for a good work/personal life balance. I personally have been employed with H2B for about 6 months now, and I love working here! We are a small company, but currently have an extensive backlog of projects; we are always getting new projects in as well – business is great! The positions we are currently seeking to fill are as follows: - Structural engineer – the ideal candidate will have 7-10 years of a variety of building experience, including commercial, education and medical. Civil Engineer – 3-5 years of experience, EIT or PE. Entry level civil engineer/civil designer – entry level civil engineer new to the industry, or an experienced civil designer that is well-versed in CADD/Micro Station. Most of the projects that we do are either small (1-10) acre commercial/industrial developments in which we typically do the full civil site design or foundation designs for pre-engineered metal buildings. Often we get projects that include both the civil site design and foundation design. We infrequently have projects that involve wood-framed structures as well. By hiring a mid-senior level Structural Engineer, we are hoping to expand our company’s range of services and get involved in some larger structural projects. Qualified candidates please send resumes to travis.james@h2bengineers.com. Thank you, Travis E. James, EIT Project Engineer H2B, Inc. (TBPE Firm Reg. Listserve. Thanks and Gig’Em. Goodwin & Marshall, Inc. (G&M) is currently seeking undergraduate students that are interested in a Cooperative Education Opportunity focused on Surveying for the 2014 Spring and Summer semesters. G&M has a well-defined college cooperative education program and for the last 15 years has worked with co-op programs and students from several universities, particularly Texas A&M University. We are looking for students that have a superior work ethic, a great attitude, and the desire to gain actual surveying experience before graduation. This particular position will be focused on the Surveying side of our business, however there will also be an opportunity for some exposure to civil engineering as surveyors and engineers will work together to successfully complete projects. G&M maintains a fulltime staff of 15 professional engineers and surveyors. Due to the size of the company, co-op students are provided with the opportunity to work closely with the registered surveyors and professional engineers on staff. Consequently, co-op students are integral to the work production process at G&M and will be working on real projects with real deadlines and budgets. The secondary purpose of the co-op program with G&M is to establish long-term relationships with the highest caliber of student. Several full-time members of our staff began their careers as co-op students, including a handful of Aggies. Since G&M implemented the co-op program in the late 90’s, over 60 college students have gained invaluable “real world” experience that they have utilized to begin successful careers. This is particularly important for students that are interested in the Surveying profession. Nationwide, the number of registered surveyors continues to decline each year as the number of retiring surveyors exceeds the number of newly registered surveyors. Through this surveying co-op opportunity, G&M is also seeking out the next full-time surveyor that will join our team. Additional information about G&M can be found on our website at www.gmcivil.com. Undergraduate students interested in this Co-op opportunity can apply by sending their resume to mbaacke@gmcivil.com. Please include “Surveying Position” in the Subject line. G&M will also be at the Career Fair in January for students interested in a Summer-Fall Co-op.
