SOME HIGH SCHOOL VOCABULARY WORDS AND IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR YOU TO KNOW
TERM OR TRIMESTER
Scott has 3 trimesters or terms. Each term is 12 weeks long. You can earn 2 ½ credits each term for a total of 7 ½ each
year.
CREDIT
Each class you take is worth ½ credit. Every time you PASS a class you receive ½ credit.
If you FAIL a class you receive 0 credit. If you fail a required class, you will have to take it over—NOT FUN!
Think of CREDITS as dollars. You get 50 cents for every class you pass. You get nothing for every class you fail. You need $28 to graduate
In other words, you will need 28 credits earned over 4 years to graduate with a Scott High School Diploma
ELECTIVE
Any class you take that is not listed as a REQUIREMENT is an ELECTIVE credit.
Every class you take is worth ½ credit whether it is Required or an Elective.
CLASS STATUS OR STANDING
Freshman=9th Grade Sophomore=10th Grade (5.5 credits) Junior=11th Grade (13 credits) Senior=12th Grade (20.5 credits)
To become a Sophomore, you will need to earn 5.5 credits in your 9th Grade. To become a Junior, you will need a total of 13 credits. To be a Senior you will
need a total of 20.5 credits.
AP CLASS
AP classes are classes that are equivalent to a college level class. Freshmen do not take AP classes.
They are usually for Juniors and Seniors.
PLAN TEST
A Practice Test for the ACT. You will take the PLAN in the 10th Grade.
It will predict how well you can expect to score on the ACT
ACT TEST
Colleges require the ACT to make sure you are ready to do college work.
In order to take college classes instead of having to pay for remedial classes, you will need to make the following scores on the ACT test in your Junior year:
English: 18 Math: 19 Reading: 20
GPA
Every grade you make has a point value. For example, a “B” is worth 3.0 points. Each grade you make in a high school
class earns points that make up your “Grade Point Average” (GPA)
WEIGHTED CLASS
Some classes require more work so you get bonus points on your GPA. Only HONORS and AP classes are weighted at
Scott. Your KEES money is weighted only if you take AP classes. Honors weight does not count for KEES money.
DIPLOMA
This is a document that is given to students who have finished a Program of Studies set by the State of Kentucky, the
Kenton County School District, and Scott High School. A Scott Diploma requires 28 credits.
COLLEGE READY CURRICULUM
Colleges in Kentucky want to make sure the students they admit are ready for college. In addition to ACT scores, they
want to know if you have met the CRC.
To meet the CRC, students must earn 2 credits in the SAME World Language and earn 1 credit in Chemistry.
