Photosynthesis Review Activity

 Create a small (8 ½ x 11) poster on photosynthesis making sure each of the following are addressed:

 You should use graphics and words

 Sunlight

 Chlorophyll molecule

Chloroplast

High energy electrons

Light-dependent reactions

 With inputs and outputs

 Light-independent reactions

 With inputs and outputs

• All parts labeled and accurate? 15 points

• Easily read and demonstrate the

Processes? 10 points

• Effort/creativity 5 points?

 NADPH/ATP

Where does the mass come from?

Which opinion or opinions do you agree with? Explain.

Lets see if you are correct!

So where does a tree get its mass from?

•  Law of Conservation of Mass – Matter cannot be created or destroyed  only TRANSFORMED

•  Can matter be made from sunlight (energy)?

• No

•  It definitely has to do with photosynthesis.

Photosynthesis Lab

On a separate sheet of paper write the following:

Question: How does light affect photosynthesis?

Hypothesis: (leave a couple spaces to write in a minute)

Materials:

 beaker

 2 test tubes

 straw

 2 sprigs of a pond plant

 aluminum foil

 phenol red

Pre-Lab Tests

Phenol red is an indicator that shows the presence or absence of CO

2

.

Write the following: (below your materials)

• When CO

2 is absent, phenol red is _________

• When CO

2 is present, phenol red turns ________

Lab Setup

1. Add several drops of phenol red to 100 ml of water until water turns the water pink.

2. Using a straw, bubble

CO

2 into the beaker until it turns yellow.

Set-Up Continued

Wrap me in Foil!

CONTROL??

3. Pour water from beaker into 2 test tubes. Place an equal sized piece of plant in each test tube.

4. Wrap 1 test tube in aluminum foil so that no light can get to the plant.

5. Label both test tubes with group name. (tape)

6. Place wrapped tube in the "dark" test tube rack.

Place the other in the

"light" test tube rack where it will be kept under light conditions for 24 hrs.

Minute Paper

On a Separate Piece of Paper:

Outline the process of photosynthesis.

 Be sure to identify the “key players” and discuss both light-dependent and light-independent reactions.

Photosynthesis Analysis Questions

1. Under which condition did photosynthesis occur? What is your evidence? Explain your evidence. Why does photosynthesis proceed under this condition?

2. Under which condition did photosynthesis not occur?

What is your evidence? Explain your evidence. Why does photosynthesis not proceed under this condition?

3. Can Photosynthesis happen during the dark? Explain how this could/could not happen.
