GEOGRAPHY: THE PLACE WHERE HISTORY HAPPENS Definition: The study of where things are on earth, why they are there, and their relationship to people, things, or other places. HUMAN VS. PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY • Human geography is the study of patterns of human life and changes humans have made on earth. • How humans have changed physical landscape • Why people act in certain ways. What would be some examples of human geography? •Spread of religion •Spread of culture •Spread of ideas •Mining for raw materials •Building dams, etc. Physical Geography • Physical geography is the study of the natural world. • • What is happening where, why & importance. What would be some examples of physical geography? – Climate, weather, landforms THE 5 THEMES OF GEOGRAPHY • MR. HELP – Movement – Region – Human/Environmental Interaction – Location – Place MOVEMENT • Includes the movement of people, things, such as goods, as well as communications (the movement of ideas). • WHAT WOULD BE AN EXAMPLE OF MOVEMENT? • Technology • Food REGION • Regions are areas that can be grouped together by a set of things special to that region. We have countries, ruled by governments, areas speaking the same language, or having the same religion, and we have areas served by a particular service, such as a school district. • WHAT REGIONS DO WE LIVE IN? • Midwest • Northeast WI HUMAN/ENVIRONMENTAL INTERACTION • This theme explains how humans and the environment interact with each other. The address can be any type of address that gives an exact position. – WHAT WOULD BE AN EXAMPLE OF ABSOLUTE LOCATION? – Street Address – Latitude and Longitude LOCATION • Relative location is shown by saying where something is in relation to somewhere or something else. Ten minutes away by train. • WHAT WOULD BE AN EXAMPLE OF RELATIVE LOCATION?
