Introduction to Sociology
LEARNING OBJECTIVE #1
• Students will demonstrate
understanding of the techniques used
for observation of social phenomena.
ASSESSMENT MEASURES
• Students will conduct content analysis,
participant observation, or field study of
a particular social setting or visual
media, and complete an essay, scored
by two raters using a criterion list.
LEARNING OBJECTIVE #2
• Students will demonstrate
understanding of hypotheses
development in the social sciences.
ASSESSMENT MEASURES
• Students will create and apply
hypotheses to explain correlations
between social variables (ex.: education
and income, unemployment and crime
rates, social class and religious
affiliation, etc.) in objectively-scored
short answer test items.
LEARNING OBJECTIVE #3
• Students will demonstrate
understanding of measurement and
data collection in the social sciences.
ASSESSMENT MEASURES
• Students will successfully complete a
computer-generated, short answer
exercise, scored with answer key, that
uses survey and census data to explore
suicide in the United States.
LEARNING OBJECTIVE #4
• Students will demonstrate
understanding of mathematical
(statistical) findings, and the
interpretation and evaluation of
research.
ASSESSMENT MEASURES
• Students will successfully demonstrate
understanding of the logic of basic
statistical measures (measures of
central tendency, correlation, statistical
significance, etc.) on short answer test
items scored with criterion list.
LEARNING OBJECTIVE #5
• Students will demonstrate knowledge of
major concepts, models and issues in
the social sciences.
ASSESSMENT MEASURES
• Students will complete essays
demonstrating an understanding of
sociological concepts as follows: theory,
culture, socialization, stratification,
social change. Scores will be obtained
by two raters using criterion list.

heart disease, HIV/AIDS, etc., vary
across social groups on objectivelyscored short answer test items.

ASSESSMENT MEASURES
• Students will correctly describe
epidemiological concepts of rate,
incidence, and prevalence and the
application of these concepts, on
objectively-scored short answer test
items.

• Students will demonstrate
understanding of mathematical
(statistical) findings, and the
interpretation and evaluation of
research findings.
ASSESSMENT MEASURES
• Students will correctly describe
calculation of life expectancy and infant
mortality on objectively-scored short
answer test items.
LEARNING OBJECTIVE #5
• Students will demonstrate knowledge of
major concepts, models and issues in
the social sciences.
ASSESSMENT MEASURES
• Students will correctly explain in essays
the concepts of the sociology of health,
illness and health care as follows:
theory, social factors and illness,
meaning and experience of illness,
health care systems (U.S. and global),
health care providers, bioethics. Scored
by two raters using criterion list.
