Explain? Animals are heterotrophs, meaning… They get their energy from “eating others” (hetero = other) Plants are autotrophs, meaning… They produce their own energy (auto = self) Plants need energy Can’t eat other plants! So, need the sun to collect light energy chemical energy Need to obtain nutrients from environment to build bigger energy molecules ex. CHNOPS C6H12O6 (glucose) How do they get the materials needed? Plant Structure* k Leaves = collect sunlight Roots = collect water & nutrients Stomata = exchange gas (CO2 & O2) Photosynthesis* The process by which green plants, some bacteria, and some protists use sunlight energy, water, and carbon dioxide to produce glucose and oxygen 6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy C6H12O6 + 6O2 Two Part Process* 1. Light Reactions: Requires light; converts light energy to chemical energy Occurs in the thylakoid membrane (see above) Collects light energy and forms ATP & NADPH Oxygen produced Light Reactions* Light energy from the sun stimulates a protein (called a “photosystem”) in the thylakoid membrane to split H2O molecules into oxygen and hydrogen ions Oxygen is released (byproduct) Hydrogen ions protons (H+) available for electron transport chain Light Reactions* Use an electron transport chain just like in cellular respiration! Light energy and a proton (H+) gradient use ATP synthase to produce ATP (light chemical energy) Both of these systems (cellular respiration & photosynthesis) have ETCs, because they were both derived from the same primitive ancestor! Cell resp: ETC in mitochondria w/ electron carrier NADH, Photosyn: ETC in chloroplast w/ electron carrier NADPH Two Part Process* 2. Light-independent Reactions (Calvin Cycle) Does not require light, but DOES require the product of the light reaction (ATP) Takes place in the stroma of the chloroplast Uses ATP & NADPH to reduce CO2 and synthesize (create) C6H12O6 (glucose) NOT called the dark reactions because CAN occur in light (just doesn’t need to) Making connections… Cellular Respiration ^ Photosynthesis ^ How are they related?
