INSTRUCTOR INFORMATION Instructor’s Name: Amira Shaham-Albalancy Office Number: F168 Office location: the office is on the first floor of the Founders building in the first hallway to the left of the main entrance (hallway next to the cashier window). I encourage you to come visit my office. If my door is open and I am in my office you are welcome in (even if not office hours). Office Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday – 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM Friday by appointment If there will be changes in office hours due to unexpected events or college related activities, I will post a note on my door and if possible will try to announce in class. Email: aalbalancy@collin.edu - BEST WAY TO GET A QUICK RESPONSE E-mail etiquette: I encourage students contact me through e-mail to discuss class material or any questions, concerns, or suggestions that they may have. I will check e-mails during the week (Monday Through Friday) up to 8 PM and students will receive a reply within 24 hours. Occasionally, I will also check e-mails during the weekend. Since I receive many e-mails daily here are some guidelines to obtain a quick response from me: 1. Send all e-mail correspondence to me through Collin College CougarMail. I cannot discuss any class or confidential information with students through external e-mail addresses. E-mails from external accounts will be checked last and might not be answered at all if the subject matter is considered confidential. 2. Include the following two pieces of information in the subject lines: the course number and the reason for the email. This will help me identify the urgency. E-mails with no subject line as described or without subject line will be read and answered last and/or might not be answered within 24 hours. 3. Students should write their full name in the e-mail. This helps me identify the sender so that I may respond properly. 4. Any e-mail that includes texting, rather than actual words, (example - “u” instead of “you”) WILL NOT BE ANSWERED CLASS INFORMATION Section Number: P2L Meeting Times: MTWR 1:00 – 3:45 pm Meeting Location: J201 Course resources: Lab manual: Human Anatomy and Physiology, custom edition for Collin College by Marieb and Mitchell for lab (I usually do not use the lab manual directly but it can be a good resource for study) These lab manual can be purchased in the campus bookstore together with the textbook and it is also available on reserve through the college library. Other course resources: 1. Mastering A and P www.pearsonmylab.com - course notes and assignments will be published there Course ID - shaham-albalancy42297; direct access via Blackboard is also available. You will use the same code and course ID that is used for the lecture section. 2. Anatomy and physiology Facebook group at: http://www.facebook.com/#/group.php?gid=115612635508&ref=ts If you are not a member please ask to join – it is a closed group for A&P students only. In this group we post photos, discuss A&P material and more. There are several posted photos, links and resources that can help you with your studies. Supplies: Mandatory - Surgical or exam gloves, dissecting kit, safety goggles Missing the first lab meeting: Students that miss the first day of the lab are required to view the “Starting with Safety” DVD in the Science Den prior to being permitted to attend the next lab. The Science Den staff will supply the student with the DVD to watch and with a confirmation note to return to their instructor to verify completion. None of the lab supplies will be supplied by instructor. Students MUST have them to participate in the lab activities Attendance Policy I strongly believe that attending and participating in class is a major factor in students’ success. Please note that I will not take attendance or monitor your participation. There is no direct penalty for being absent. However, if you do not attend class, you are still responsible for all material covered during that class meeting and you will receive a zero (0) for any missed assignment. I will occasionally announce in the class changes/additions to schedule and assignments. I do not post those changes on any platform. It is highly recommended that if you miss a class, you would contact me or your friends to get the updates. Missed (due to absence) material and assignments that are distributed in class cannot be obtained from my office without an acceptable excuse with appropriate documentation. Please see my Make-up and late submission Guidelines for Assignments and/or Exams for more information. Come on time – I am going to be on time in class and prepared to teach. I expect the same from all the students enrolled in this class. I find students who are tardy to be disruptive with the teaching/learning process that is taking place in the classroom. Therefore in accordance with section 7-4.5 Classroom Dismissal by Faculty Member, of the current Student Handbook, “If a student is disruptive in class . . .a faculty member has the right to temporarily dismiss the student from class. . . .” Therefore, if you are late you will not be able to join the class. If a student is late more than once, it will be reported to the Dean of Students. The time will be decided by the clock founds on the wall in the classroom. If the clock is off, the time will be defined by my watch. Electronic Devices: NO ELECTRONIC DEVICES ARE ALLOWED IN THE CLASSROOM (UNLESS SPECIFICALLY APPROVED BY THE INSTRUCTOR AS SPECIFIED IN AGREEMENT BELOW) It is a violation of the Student Code of Conduct (Chapter 2, Section 7-2.4 Other Offenses, Item S) to engage “in the use of electronic or digital media or telecommunication devices during class, Collin College labs and/or other learning environments.” This includes social networking activities such as texting, talking on the phone, and Web browsing from laptops, Smart phones, or any other relevant electronic devices during class time. Class electronic devices guidelines: 1. Each student should print, initial and sign the attached agreement and hand it back to me no later than the second meeting of the class (Tuesday 6/10/2014). 2. If you are not able to attend class, please scan and e-mail by the due date AND bring the hard copy in the next meeting 3. Students that will not supply the signed hard copy of the agreement by the due date will not be able to use any electronic device in the classroom at any time. 4. Attempts to use an electronic device not in accordance with the above rules and the ones specified in the agreement, will result in removing the student from the class on the particular meeting and reporting to the office of the Dean of Students if such violation will be repeated. Method of Evaluation: This is the required distribution of lecture and lab grades according to the biology department Final Lecture Total (Lecture Total*0.6) Final Laboratory Total Course Grade (Laboratory Total*0.4) Letter Grade: 100-90 =A 80-89 =B 70-79 =C 60-69 =D >60 =F Please note - I do not curve class grades nor do I round grades to the next level (example: a student with a final grade of 79.4 will receive a C in the course). It is extremely important that you will record your grades and calculate them during the semester (see details below – in “Detailed Method of Evaluation”) Detailed Method of Evaluation It is a student’s responsibility to track their individual assignments and exams grades and calculate cumulative grades throughout the semester. Students who have questions about their grades, how to improve their grades, or how to calculate their grades, should meet with me as soon as possible. Please do not wait until the last week of the semester to discuss these issues with me, because by then it is usually too late to make a major improvement in a student’s overall grade. It is very important to understand that a non-submitted assignment will be recorded with a grade of zero that will be incorporated into the final grade Below you will find the detailed distribution of the grades: 1. Each assignment has a maximum grade of 100 (not including bonus points – if applies). 2. The calculation is made by averaging each component and using the average to calculate % of grade (example – take all your quizzes grade and calculate average; take the average and multiple by 0.2. This will give you the relative contribution of the quizzes to the LAB grade) 3. Lab will include mainly (but not only) anatomy and histology. Students are expected to know the relationship between structure and function to succeed in the class. Assignment % from grade final lab 8-10 Quizzes 2 Lab reports 3 Practicals Total 20 20 20 each=60 100 8-10 quizzes – no quiz grade will be dropped. The highest grade will be considered twice. Quizzes will include set-up questions and questions to be answered / words to be defined. No make-up quizzes will be given under any circumstances. 2 lab reports – The topics and dates will be announced in class during the semester and detailed instructions will be posted on the Mastering A&P. Lab reports should be submitted written in a scientific format. Detailed rubric will be posted on the Mastering A&P. Written assignments should be submitted via turnitin.com (class ID: 8080710 and password: lec2402s14 – same as lecture section) and a hard copy should be submitted on the due date in class. I do not accept e-mailed assignments or submission in my office unless discussed and authorized by me. Each assignment will be accompanied by specific instructions. No late submission will be granted without acceptable reason supported by documentation (see Make-up and late submission Guidelines for Assignments and/or Exams below). 3 practical exams – Each lab practical will include 50 set-up questions (slides, models, dissected cats etc.). The offering of bonus / extra points is optional. If given the maximum point values are: Maximum 5 points per lab quiz Maximum 3 points per 100 point lab practical Maximum 0 points (no extra/bonus) per lab report Make-up and late submission Guidelines for Assignments and/or Exams I understand that a student may have some unexpected events impacting their life during the semester (example: major illness or death of a family member). It is important for the student to communicate with me about these issues immediately, so that s/he will have an opportunity to complete missed coursework and exams. There are some class rules regarding missed coursework and exams that students should be aware of: 1. Class policy is that no make-up exams (any type) will be given automatically. If a student cannot take the exam during the scheduled time, the student must contact me immediately to discuss options (by CougarMail or leaving a message on my office phone within seven (7) hours of missing the test). 2. Do not assume that you are eligible for a make-up test. Only students with acceptable excuses (hospitalization of the student or immediate family member or a death in the immediate family) will be considered automatically with appropriate documentation. Please discuss with me what is considered an appropriate documentation. Any other reason should be discussed with me in person. Documents must be presented to me on the first class session that the student returns to class. The documents supplied should cover ALL the missing classes. If a student fails to return to class and to show supporting documents in a timely manner, no make-up will be granted. If you miss a practical please contact me immediately (as mentioned above) to discuss your options. If a make up is approved a comprehensive make up practical will be given in the final exam day 7/10/2014 starting at 1:30pm in J201. The eligibility for a practical make up will be discussed upon supplying the appropriate documentation by a committee that includes me and 2 other A&P professors that were assigned by the A&P group. Lateral Transfer Policy Lateral transfers will not be granted after the 2nd week of class or after the first lecture exam, whichever comes first. Exceptions to this are for documented changes in work schedule and family emergencies. If a student does transfer to another section, all previous grades will accompany the student. However, the new instructor can require the student to retake any exam or quiz. For questions concerning this policy, contact the Biology Department Chair. Grading of assignment of a student caught violating the Student Code of Conduct for Scholastic Dishonesty Any form of scholastic dishonesty will be reported to the Dean of Student Development Office for review. The specific Assignment will not be graded until I receive a final decision from the Dean of Student Development Office. If the student is found in violation of the Student Code of Conduct, the specific assignment will receive a grade of zero. In addition, if a student is suspected of committing scholastic dishonesty, I reserve the right not only to submit a formal complaint to the Dean of Student Development Office, but also to give a grade of “F” for the entire course Academic Dishonesty: See the current Collin Student Handbook for additional information. It is also disrespectful to others, both students and instructors, who are engaged in the teaching/learning process. The quality of the learning experience suffers when these discourteous distractions occur. Therefore, students who wish to have electronic devices in the classroom when permitted must agree to comply with the guidelines outlined below. Directions: Your initials located next to each item below signify your understanding and compliance with each term of this policy. __________All electronic devices, including cell phones, blackberries, pagers, tablet PCs, mobile presenters, wireless tablets, digital recorders, beepers, palms, Ipods, MP3 players, texting calculators, camera phones, digital cameras or laptops, are not to be used during class unless the professor authorizes their usage for a class-related purpose. __________Students may not take pictures or make recordings (audio and/or video) of classmates or instructors without their permission. ________________During lab activities, smartphones or cameras may be used for the purpose of taking pictures of the slides and models ONLY. If a student will use the devices to any purpose other than taking pictures, the use of electronic devices will be banned completely for the entire class for the same session. __________During regular lecture classes, students are permitted to keep their cell phones on vibrate if they have a legitimate need, which must be approved in advance by the instructor. During exam periods, ALL cell phones must be turned OFF and put away in a backpack, purse, etc. __________If authorized to use, Laptop computers, notebooks, tablets, and other similar devices may ONLY be used for class-related purpose. Students will refrain from using their devices for any other purpose, including Internet use, social media, texting, instant messaging, game playing, etc. ___________Audio and video recorders (digital recorders, mp3 players, smart phones, etc.) may be used to record classroom lectures, but the professor has to authorize their usage for and it has to be for class-related purpose only. Students should stop the audio and video recording once the lecture is over. Audio and video recordings are for the student’s individual use only, and may not be distributed to others without permission from the instructor. __________Violation of this agreement will result in revocation of electronic device usage privileges. Violations of this agreement as it relates to the Collin Student Code of Conduct will be turned in to the Dean of Students Office.
