Sophomore English: British Literature
Syllabus: September-December 2013
Ms. Deborah Fallon, Mrs. Margaret Schellato
The student is responsible for being prepared for class by following the schedule in the
syllabus. Each instructor retains the right to alter dates or add assessments as the need
arises. Changes to the syllabus will be posted on the teacher’s page.
This class is designed to be interactive and your participation is crucial. As one means
of assessing your involvement, daily attendance will be monitored. If you are absent,
you are responsible for securing class notes and handouts and checking the teacher’s
page for any changes. Tests, in class essays, etc. must be made up within two days of
your return to school.
Summer Reading:
Due dates for the summer reading assessments follow. The details of the specific
assignments will be handed out in class.
September 9: A Man For All Seasons
September 16: 1984
September 23: Pride and Prejudice
September 30: Jane Eyre
Vocabulary:
Vocabulary lessons must be completed independently and will be reviewed in class
weekly on Fridays. Additional assignments related to vocabulary will be at the
instructor’s discretion. Vocabulary tests will be administered upon completion of each 6lesson unit. The first test is scheduled for October 21.
PSAT/SAT Preparation:
Lessons geared to preparation for the PSAT and SAT will be conducted regularly. Keep
your copy of the Kaplan’s SAT Subject Test in Literature in the classroom. It may not
be taken home until the end of the school year.
Little, Brown Handbook:
The Little, Brown Handbook is an important grammar, usage, writing, and style resource
book that has been adopted for the sophomore, junior, and senior classes. You should
consult this text for help as you complete your homework. Bring your book to class on
the days indicated in the syllabus. Additional dates will be announced in class and/or
posted on the teacher’s page as appropriate.
Literature—Pearson Prentice-Hall The British Tradition: Reading Schedule:
Be prepared to discuss the assigned works on the scheduled dates. Preparation includes
completing the reading and recording your responses to the literature. Class preparation
may be tested through measures such as unannounced quizzes, in class writing
assignments, or group discussion. A reading journal, specifics of which will be presented
in class, will be collected and graded periodically.
