PRE – AP CHEMISTRY EXPECTATIONS MRS. GILL gillsx@pwcs.edu SCHOOLFUSION: I post copies of assignments, links for extra review and videos to SchoolFusion. YOU MUST ENTER A CORRECT EMAIL ADDRESS SO THAT YOU CAN RECEIVE UPDATES VIA EMAIL – THIS IS MANDATORY AND IT CAN BE A PARENT’S EMAIL. Parent’s Initials for School Fusion - _________________ Student’s Initials for School Fusion - _________________ REMIND101: I have found REMIND101 to be an excellent way to stay in contact with my students. Students have found it very useful to ask questions and get a quick response from me. I will check REMIND101 until 8pm each night. REMIND 101 offers safe chat for students to ask questions. I will post homework and assessment reminders on REMIND101. GRADING: Your academic grade will be calculated by dividing your points earned by the total points possible. Points will be earned in the following areas: Please complete all work in PENCIL, Chemistry is basically a math class with science and you will want to be able to easily correct your mistakes. Also we will be checking work with pen and it helps to easily see your corrections. A. Standard Based Summative Assessments – (aka tests or quizzes) Each assessment will cover 3-4 standards of material and will be broken down by these standards Each assessment will have 3-4 grades assigned to it based on the standards B. Bell Ringers – (small daily formative assessments) This will be 1-2 problem done daily covering the current material. Students will keep these in their composition book. Students will receive immediate feedback from me and will be able to work on the problem(s) until it is correct. This will be a small 20-25 point grade for each unit of study. C. Laboratory – Your lab mark is based on pre-labs and written lab reports. Your laboratory will consist of multiple assignments, you may have pre-lab questions to complete, you will always have a completed lab report that must be done and occasionally you will have laboratory quizzes. YOU MUST HAVE BEEN PRESENT AND ACTUALLY HAVE DONE THE LAB WORK IN ORDER TO RECEIVE CREDIT FOR A LAB REPORT. D. Miscellaneous Projects – We will be doing several small projects throughout the year. Information will be provided at the time the project is assigned. Important Items that will not be assessed a Traditional Grade I am not calling it homework anymore!!!! A. FORMATIVE ASSIGNMENTS: (AKA HOMEWORK) Michael Phelps didn’t win a truckload of gold medals without hitting the pool everyday, did you think Mark Zuckerburg just lucked into Facebook, and I pretty sure JayZ had to practice his hits once or twice. So you shouldn’t be shocked with the necessity of practicing a little bit every night. How can you possibly do well on the summative assessments without practice and remember you can’t retest until all the work is complete. You might as well get on board with the practice schedule just like you would for any extracurricular. A good rule of thumb for practice is to complete at least half of the problems the night they are assigned (odds one night, evens the next). This way if problems occur there is still plenty of time to come in for help. Late practice assignments hurt your ability to learn. Please do your best to complete all assignments on time. Please come talk to me if you are having trouble completing practice on time. We will be going over practice on the day it is due. I will post the answers online or go over the answers in class, and then you will have a chance to assess your own work and make corrections with classmates. This is practice so I expect you to make mistakes and learn from them. This is practice so I won’t be assigning a grade to it, but will mark it in the grade book as completed or missing. I will do my best to always post these assignments on School Fusion. B. BINDER – An organized chemistry binder must be kept to provide ready access to notes, handouts, homework and other references. It should be kept up to date and brought to class each day. Your notebook should only contain Chemistry materials. The following is a suggestion of how to organize your notebook, please decide what works best for you. I would definitely use a three-ring binder (1 ½ in or 2 in) and have dividers for each chapter or topic. I will help you label the dividers as we make our way through the school year. I have had students use the according files, which can be easily labeled as well. RETESTING: This is available for summative assessments, only. This will take place after school on a day designated by Mrs. Gill. This is a privilege not a right. Retesting will be available for students scoring below a 70% on any standard on a summative assessment. Students will be given a review assignment specific to the deficient standard that must be completed correctly before the re-test can occur. Students will be given a test ticket, which will inform them of the material to be retested as well as the date the re-test must occur by and a place for a parent to sign in acknowledgement. The higher of the two scores will be recorded If necessary additional re-test opportunities may be given, re-testing opportunities may be extended to all students and the re-testing may be rescinded completely. This is the sole discretion of Mrs. Gill. CLASS CONDUCT: No “horseplay” of any sort will be allowed in the classroom or the laboratory. Such behavior in a chemistry lab results in danger to the health and safety of the other students and will not be tolerated. No person has the right to behave in such a way as to interfere with the legitimate rights, or hurt the feelings, of other people. Foul language and disrespectful treatment of anyone will not be tolerated and will result in disciplinary action. Considerate, courteous, cooperative and mature behavior is expected. LATE WORK: Please avoid submitting work late; this includes your daily practice as well. Your grade will not be impacted, but your time will be. You will need to schedule a time out with me. Time Outs will be held after school on Tues, Weds and Thurs. You will need to bring your incomplete work to work on with me. EXTRA HELP: I will be available for extra help Tues and Thurs each week from 2:00-3:00 pm in room 3101. Don’t wait to come in for help; a little help can go a long way to aid in your success. GENERAL INFORMATION: 1. ALWAYS BRING AN ATTITUDE TO LEARN. (Even if you forget everything else) 2. Always bring the following to class – notebook with paper, scientific calculator, pencils 3. Never bring to class on lab days – food, drinks, gum, candy, open-toed shoes 4. Cell phones, tablets, iPods, laptops need to be used according to the new BYOD policy. I will post when these items may be used in class. Supplies for Chemistry: Due Date_As soon as you are able (please let me know if you need financial assistance) 1) Binder with dividers (1 ½ or 2 inch) 2) Composition Book 3) Paper for binder (not a spiral notebook) 4) Pencils 5) Note cards – helpful, but not necessary 6) Highlighter-helpful, but not necessary 7) Scientific Calculator is preferred; look for the word Scientific on the packaging. Graphing calculators may be used on tests and quizzes, but may be subject to having the memory erased, which can sometimes erase purchased apps. I have a class set of calculators for students to borrow during class; each student will be assigned a specific calculator.
