STONY BROOK
SUMMER READING PROGRAM
Dear Stony Brook Students and Parents,
Is your child complaining he or she is bored with nothing to do? Is it too hot
outside, are there only reruns are on television or are the mosquitoes biting
too much? Well, we have some answers for you!
Stony Brook School is offering a summer reading incentive program.
Enclosed you will find a district-wide summer reading list compiled by Mrs.
Corkery and other district librarians. The teachers at Stony Brook School
invite you to join Stony Brook’s Summer Reading Program!
The attached list offers suggestions for books your child can read.
Parents may read books to younger grade children. You may substitute
any non-fiction book on the list for another book on the same subject at your
child’s reading level. You may also read any book by the same author
marked with the word “series”.
Stony Brook Summer Reading Program Prizes:
 Read 5 books, earn a reading certificate
 Read 10 books, earn a reading certificate and a homework pass!
 Read 20 books, earn a homework pass, a reading certificate, and an
invitation to come to our Summer Reading Party!
 There will be a Grand Prize for the overall top reader!
THE READING LOG MUST BE SUBMITTED TO YOUR CHILD’S
HOMEROOM TEACHER ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL,
NO EXCEPTION WILL BE MADE!
*All forms will also be available on Mrs. Corkery’s website!*
If you haven’t heard….
Stony Brook School has an exciting online reading program called Tumble Books. It
has more than 300 narrated, animated picture books and chapter books in English as well
as in Spanish and French. Your child can read along as he/she listens to the narrator, or
turn off the sound and simply read along and watch the animation. After finishing the
story, a student can either take a short quiz just for fun, try a puzzle or game , or write a
short report.
Directions:
1. Point to the gray Library button on the top of the Stony Brook School website.
When you see a dropdown box, click on TumbleBooks to get to the website.
2. Click on either Story Books (easy picture books) or Readables (chapter
books).
3. Search for a book by title or subject or just click on the cover picture that you
like. To find a book in Spanish, click on Choose a Language on the top right.
4. Listen, read, and enjoy!
How to choose “just right” books:
 Look at the cover.
 Read the title and author.
 Read the blurb in the back or inside the front cover.
 Flip through the book.
 Read a page using the Five Finger Rule:
Put one finger up for every word you don’t know.
 0-1 Fingers – Too easy
 2-3 Fingers – Just right
 4-5 Fingers – Too hard
Have a great summer! Happy Reading!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Kobylarz
Mrs. Corkery
