ABSTRACT
The 2012-2013 Graduate Exit Survey provides data on recent prospective graduates’ perceptions of the programs and services of Guilford Technical Community College. Information concerning prospective graduates’ satisfaction with various aspects of GTCC such as instruction and student-oriented services is examined as well as goal-completion data.
The primary stakeholders of this particular survey include current and prospective GTCC students, GTCC faculty and staff, and the North Carolina Community College System. This survey will be used for college-level program reviews and the state-level annual performance review. Demographic variables include sex, race, and age.

INTRODUCTION
The Office of Institutional Research, Effectiveness, and Reaffirmation conduct a survey of the Guilford
Technical Community College (GTCC) graduating class each year. The purpose of the study is to gather data on the perceptions of and satisfaction with experiences our prospective graduates have had throughout their academic studies while at the college. Gathering these types of data from our prospective graduates provides important planning and improvement information for our program departments and service areas. Such data are critical to our internal program reviews and external system-level reporting requirements.
METHODOLOGY
Design and Survey Administration
The 2012-2013 Graduate Exit Survey administered by the Institutional Research, Effectiveness, and
Reaffirmation staff was based on previous graduate exit surveys conducted at GTCC and included questions mandated by the North Carolina Community College System for performance management.
The survey comprised the following categories: general conclusions concerning overall satisfaction with the quality of service areas and of instruction, reasons for enrolling at GTCC, goal completion, and employability skills information.
The survey was administered by the Records Office to those individuals whom graduated in the Fall
2012, Spring 2013 and Summer 2013 semesters. Of the 1987 unduplicated prospective graduates for Fall
2012, Spring 2013 and Summer 2013 semesters, 526 responded to the survey. This provided a response rate of 26.4%. Because a student can complete and therefore apply for graduation in multiple programs in one academic year, it is possible that a student may have completed the survey more than one time.
Demographic data were drawn from the Colleague system.
Analysis Format
Frequencies and/or percentages of responses are presented as the primary format for analysis. The analysis includes an overview of responses for each survey section. All analyses involve the entire survey sample (n=526) unless otherwise noted.

Additionally, response rate was 2.6% for 2011-2012 due to distribution of the survey later in the semester than usual, interpret these results with caution.

Satisfaction ratings for the overall quality of GTCC are up 4.8% from 2007-2008 academic year including a peak at 2009-2010 with the satisfaction with quality of academic programs increasing 3.6% from 2007-2008 to
2012-2013. Satisfaction with the quality of instruction in major course has been relatively consistent throughout the years.
Results show an increase in the number of individuals coming to GTCC to prepare for/get a new job, with an increase of 13.1% from 2007-2008 to 2012-2013. This is intuitive considering the current condition of the economy and the poor job market. However, “The program I wanted was offered” is still the most frequent reason for enrolling at GTCC with the percentage of individuals responding this way fluctuating throughout the years.
Conclusions
The Graduate Exit Survey Report offers valuable insight into perceptions of GTCC graduates’ during their education at GTCC as well as insight into their future plans. Information gleaned from the survey can be used by various divisions and departments to further enhance College operations. The comparisons across years show some fluctuations and when used with previous reports can identify trends over time highlighting valuable information

General
The teachers need to communicate better with their online students. If my teacher had communicated better than I would have graduated earlier.
This is my 5th program completion. I love GTCC and what it offers. The instructors are amazing. I am also very pleased with the outcome of the CoOp Internship.
E-degree students are not given consideration about being sick. You have students who work full time and have families. People get sick this should not be held against them.
The only negative experience that I would like to share is admissions. I almost decided not to enroll in GTCC because no one calls you back and everyone has a poor attitude there. Overall, everywhere else I have had great experiences, especially with the teachers!
I highly recommend that the ACA118 FHT-01 class be observed for some changes. It is my opinion that students can benefit from using actual techniques for time management, student stress and critical thinking. I believe many individuals can clearly define each of these terms; however many individuals are unaware of the various "hands on" techniques that can be used to assist students with situations that are inevitable to happen while pursing or farthing their education.
Get better teachers.
I am glad that I attended GTCC. It was a memorable experience. The education that I received has enhanced my intelligence and caused me to be a better informed person.
I believe that the Pharmacy Technology program could be a great program. However, I believe its instructors are less than satisfactory.
make sure Instructors and advisors tell students that subjects in their field are only offered in certain semesters i.e. Basics is only offered in the fall and Advanced, and Garde
Mange is only offered in Summer, things of that nature. When you begin to enroll and you don't in the "first" class it sets you back by a semester or year!!!
This educational experience has been such a great tool to carry on with me, I've retained, and learned a numerous amount of knowledge to utilize and help me to be a resourceful
individual contributing to society as a helper..... Thanks to the instructors in the Human
Service Department who aided in the process....
I really have enjoyed my academic experience here at Guilford Tech. I have enjoyed learning from well educated professors and look forward to using all that I have learned in the professional workplace and in my daily life. My experience has encouraged me to pursue my education even further and I look forward to passing down the importance of education to my children as they grow and learn.
Gtcc was very helpful to me and my career because I have been taught by the best instructors who are in my career field. I feel like I have learned the necessary tools to be successful after graduating college.
This has been a great learning experience.
This has been a great learning experience.
My program was very thorough and covered all aspects of the industry ex. Financial,
Managerial, Practical.
No, I had a great experience at GTCC and look forward to continuing my education.
I find the administrative rules and bureaucracy at the NC community colleges unnecessarily rigid and frustrating to deal with and could cause many more impatient people to give up. While colleges don't view themselves as businesses, they probably should. Helping and pleasing the 'customer' will take on increasing emphasis as students have more and more educational options to choose from. Audrey Floyd has been extremely helpful from the very beginning of my GTCC experience. Had she been impatient, difficult or even slow to respond to my requests for information - I probably would never have enrolled at GTCC. I can't say enough good things about her. I also appreciate the hard work of Dr. Pagan and Mr. Badick. In my opinion, GTCC offers the best aviation program in North Carolina. Had the online aviation courses not existed I would also not have enrolled. Thank you all!
It was a life changing experience at GTCC and the teachers taught me a lot about responsibility and time management.
Love GTCC!!
Proud to be a Titan Grad.
I've attend GTCC since 2006, and it has not been easy at all for me. This experience has been such a roller coaster ride for myself, family, and a host of other things in my life. I am 51 years of age and I am not giving up because I know that the God that I serve has so much more for me at the end of my Journey. I am so thankful for the good times, and the bad time, and even the in between. My very first instructor has been such a huge blessing in my life. Mrs. Sharon Stover if it had not been for this woman in my life to tell me that it does not matter how old you are. It is what you want out of it. She let me know that it did not matter what I was called as a child that was the past, and it was up to me now to prove to myself that I could do the work. I did it, and I'm not what my father calls me to
be. I am an intelligent Black Woman, and I will encourage other to take that step towards education. It can be done.........
I am graduating in May, although I have been advised by the head of my program, I was one credit hour short. I cannot fathom how I was advised and registered each semester by a trusted staff member like the head of an associate’s degree program and yet still come up one credit hour short. Things need to change in the academic advising department.
Thank you for everything.
I am pretty pleased with my experience at GTCC!
The wait times in the enrollment and academic advising department can be quite excessive. I also didn't like have my "own" adviser I could contact if I had questions. I would have loved to have been assigned a person who I could call or email with any questions rather than having to come to GTCC and wait in line for sometimes hours.
The college is not very understanding when it comes to military personnel or others who have completed college courses or degrees in the past, when it comes to things like registering for GTCC specifically SOAR. Also, those people should not be required to take a mandatory study skills course. Clearly they already meet and or exceed those requirements and there should be an option to negate those requirements for experienced individuals.
my core classes were excellent
It was a great experience.
I have met a lot of great teachers, faculty, and students during my time here.
I really enjoyed my time here, even though it took a while to make it through. I do plan to move on with pursing my goals and ambitions and do big things in my life.
I thought GTCC was a great way to start my college life.
Your online teachers need to work harder to help the students that do not understand the class. They do not like to email the students back and are very rude
Financial Aid has some very rude employees. They act like it's a hassle to answer a question.
I Love the educators in the Human Services Dept at GTCC, but with the program being so popular, staff need help in handling all the people that come through this department.
They are all wonderful and very good teachers. Seems may have trouble holding on to good teachers, not sure why but maybe a departmental assistant would help.
I do not feel like I received the proper education to fulfill my requirements for employment. All other general ed. classes were fine, but classes pertaining to my particular program fell short, and have left my discouraged.
Great school
Great Advising Counselors at the High Point Campus
TECHER AND STAFF CONCERN AND HELP THE STUDENT.
It was a great experience. Great service from the beginning to the end.
Get a consistent logo/brand down - too many different logos floating about. Also, a website redesign would be a good idea.
I enjoyed my time at G.T.C.C. The teachers are as diverse as the students. My only regret is that there are no actual degrees geared towards my major (Archaeology/ History). This created a problem with the academic advisors that were trying to recommend a transfer degree. This problem caused me to end up at G.T.C.C much longer than I had planned.
Good school. Love Mr. Boz.
In my experience, I found that most of the instructors have a genuine interest in the success of the student. That was important to me I would not trade my experiences here for anything. This program has been great, but I feel that there is a severe limitation on the quality of instruction due to the lack of funds to the program. This program could be taken to new heights if it was allowed any extra bit of budget, and I feel that GTCC's reputation could skyrocket if there was some way to raise the budget of the culinary department. They can only go as far as they will be allowed.
The Cosmetology Department was such a wonderful experience, I have learned so much from the teachers that will forever be instilled in me to be the best at what I do. I love each and every one of them. They are truly awesome.
I feel that the quality of the education and the academic staff employed are both first rate, however I feel that they drop the ball in the advising department, and assisting in solving situations that may potentially derail an aspiring student.
excellent Design Faculty
I love GTCC. I've been a student here almost consecutively for the last 10 years and have graduated several times from this school. I will probably re-enroll in continuing education curriculum at some point even after I graduate this time. I owe this school so much for helping me to make a new plan for myself after being laid off so many times.
Drop the Architectural program all together or bring in teachers that will educate students. There really is no point in offering this program, because there are no jobs in this area and with the majority of the student demographic being older they are unable to relocate. Some of the teachers are much unprepared. Also the ladies in charge at the testing center at Jamestown are very rude and make the learning environment hostile for students, they seem like they don’t want to be there argue with the students and overall are very disrespectful to students. I loved the program and the teachers. We earned many certifications that aren't earned in other programs like the one offered at GTCC. I wish that GTCC could offer more courses to further my education in this field or offer other courses to go along with it just to be able to take for personal interests that are more focused on certain subject matters (for example, a detailed class on interpreting EKGs within cardiology spectrum).
Has improved greatly since I first came to campus and the wait is shorter in the admissions office. I am very pleased at how advanced the system is coming to better serve the students and employees.
Thank you GTCC!!!!!!!!!!
SGA Experience
I can say that the experience has been pleasant I wasn't sure what to expect but I have really enjoyed it. Every single one of my teachers has made the experience great they have shown me that they actually care and they are always here to help.
The experience of attending GTCC was an enjoyable one. I was able to meet nice and intelligent professors and an advisor who was personal, kind, and caring. Thank you for the opportunity to attend such an amazing institution.
I'm glad I graduate in May. It was hard from time to time, but I made it through.
It was not too easy and I like that about the program I am graduating from and I got great hands on experience.
Great School
Overall Gtcc was a great experience. I made some good friends as well as business contacts. The turnover rate for teachers seems to be high in the general studies at night program. I was completely dissatisfied with the advising when to sign up for classes and the work necessary to graduate. There seems to be a high dropout rate each semester which makes the first 4-5 weeks of enrollment and going to class a nightmare. After the
4-5 week mark the school is enjoyable and navigating becomes easier.
THANKS FOR THE HELP OF GTCC WITH THE HELP OF ITS FINANCIAL
SUPPORT.IAM REALLY IMPRESSED OF GETTING AN ASSOCIATE
DEGREE.FRIENDS THOUGHT I WILL NOT MAKE IT, BUT DETERMINATION
AND PERSEVERANCE IAM GRADUATING WITH FLYING COLORS.
My experience has been a journey. I have had some good times, hard times and bad times, but overall I made it through. Thanks for you your help and support.
IAM SO IMPRESSED THAT IAM GETTING AN ASSOCIATE WITH THE HELP OF
GTCC & ITS FINANCIAL AID SUPPORT MAY GOD GUIDE GTCC AND KEEP IT

WILL NOT MAKE IT,BUT WITH MUCH DETERMINATION AND
PERSEVARANCE.
I would recommend this school to anyone. I love GTCC!
Mrs. Bunge does an impeccable job with the middle college students.
Overall attending GTCC has taught me how to apply each skilled learned. With comprehension of my studies I'm able to challenge myself beyond my college experience.
GTCC has been flexible and affordable and I would recommend others with hectic schedules to give it a try.
It was a long journey for me because I have been out of school for some years. Therefore,
I had a lot of ups and downs. But I was able to accomplish my goals with the help of instructors, advisors, and determination not to give up!
There is a need for someone with knowledge of the aviation program that works on the
Jamestown campus because no one seems to have any idea of what to advise.
I believe GTCC better equip their students for employment than some universities.
Especially the technical aspect.
It has been a good experience. At first I thought I could not endure but, the turnout has been a great one.
DR. BESON WAS THE BEST! HE ENSPIRED ME TO CONTINUE MY
EDUCATION
The best experience I've had at GTCC was having Mr. Phillip Straughan as an instructor for numerous classes. He loves what he does so much and it shows at every class meeting. Listening to him made me want to love it as much as he does. His enthusiasm really inspired me. I use his phrase all the time..... "Are you loving it?"
I did not like being graded in a group as a whole. I think each student should have their work graded individually on what they do, not what is done as a team. The Mathlab and
MyITlab both have issues that need to be looked into.
I had the BEST instructors that I think anyone could have at GTCC. Linda Beitz and
Patrick Sanecki really care about their students and they always go above and beyond to make sure that they get the very best out of life. The whole Culinary Department and all the Chefs were also great. The Culinary and Hospitality Department has made a huge impact on my life and I am thankful to have had the experiences I had with them.
GTCC has provided me with an exceptional education that has afforded me with the much needed information that help me to get the employment that I have now.
I enjoyed the time there and glade I choose to go there it gave me a good feeling about completing something I started out to do for myself.
I would like for the Instructors to really learn how to use the Moodle system. Some instructors placed high demands on students regarding using Moodle to post assignments, however they do not do their due diligence in accurately keeping records and grades.
Most of professors have been flexible throughout my term. My educational experience overall was one where I took away many lessons learned. I enjoyed the instructors in my program and feel like they have given me the tools to move forward into a career in that field or pursue another level of education.
This e-degree program has been very beneficial to me and my family. Had I not been able to go to school online, I wouldn't have had time to attend having 2 small children, a husband, home and work.
Some of the teachers were not teachers
The Advertising & Graphic Design program is an excellent program with fantastic instructors. I would highly recommend it!
I have had a wonderful experience at GTCC. I have had wonderful professors who made me feel valued personally and an academic advisor that was willing to work with me through many personal struggles in my path to my Associates degree.
Library could be updated to include current resources and a better place to study.
Consider building a building for studying
All over is good.
The instructors for the Fire Protection Technology program are great at what they do.
I was successful happy to be at GTCC
Although all instructors are skilled in culinary, a few need assistance in people skills and teaching methods. Handing out laptops for testing purposes has proven to be unreliable.
Please consider adding a computer room to cut down on the technical difficulties that may arise with a mobile computer cart. Other than that, all of the instructors that I have encountered in the And program for the most part have been easy to work with and really do care about their student's success. I have enjoyed being in this program and I am so proud to have attended GTCC! I am a better person overall.
I was very happy to attend GTCC.
GTCC should disclose up front when extra expenses are required in courses (at the time of registration). Classes in ART, Drama, Theater, Music Appreciation and Religion were a great financial burden on me and my family. These expenses should be included in the course at time of registration or at least disclosed so that we can make informed decision as to whether or not to take them. I was a part of the Early College program. I took my classes on this campus since 9th grade. It would be nice if the college helped us feel a part of the campus and not a segregated "freak" step-child. I was looking to form a lasting legacy hear and have fond memories of my "school", but this did not happen. GTCC needs more student activities, in general.
This was a great experience! I was unpleased with the lack of open slots in the PTA program, and the classes relating to other degree programs also had limited spots. I had to change my degree program 3 or 4 times because spots were not open in the classes required for those programs. It would seem that if you offer a program, you should also be able to make room for the people who are in the program to continue in the program for more than one semester.
My experience as a student at GTCC has been a joy. I would recommend this community to anyone who wants a better education.
I thank GTCC personally for helping me grow and starting out my future! I have learned so much educationally and about myself. It has truly set me up for success with job skills, knowledge and preparing me to enter UNCG. I advise anyone and everyone who is just starting college out of High School like I did, to first come to GTCC. Get a grasp on college life and courses; obtain your associates and if you decide to further your education, GTCC will have already set you up for success!
Overall this was a great school to attend.
I am happy with my experiences at GTCC.
The Greensboro Campus on E. Wendover Ave. needs more counselors to help Ms.
Frankie Lane with the huge workload that she has. One counselor for six-thousand students is not enough.
Would recommend school to others.
I am an immigrant. I am grateful to everybody( teachers) to support me to accomplish my goal
I would just like to thank everyone there for helping me make my dreams come true.
High Point Campus Advising in particularly Ms. Velina Ebert has been very helpful to my success. She has been with me from the very beginning. Although the High Point
Campus is equal distance from my house as to the Jamestown Campus I prefer going to the High Point Campus for me advising needs even though all classes are located at the
Jamestown Campus.
Great school!
Mrs. Alice Jordan/Counseling Services, Mr. Donald Sowell/Electrical Systems, and Tom
Grant/Mathematics were very instrumental in my education process. I want to say Thank you for their assistance.
Mrs. Alice Jordan/Mr. Donald Sowell and Tom Grant were very instrumental in assisting me with my educational goals.
I believe that GTCC has a very active staff and faculty that work hard to meet the needs of its students. However, I believe that students would benefit more from experiencing their education mostly in the classroom where they have the instant opportunity to ask questions and receive direct answers from a more interpersonal interaction.
I am truly an advocate for education and see the importance of setting myself apart with the high demands of our changing economy.
My educational experience was awesome. GTCC had a lot of improvement on this year
(SLO, Attending policy...etc) Great program; great teachers; very disciplined which helps to learn and take responsibility
Great program; great teachers; very disciplined which helps to learn and take responsibility.
I like the instructors that I had but the Department head has been very difficult to work with. It is ridiculous and something needs to be done about this. I am very disappointed and I am not the only student who feels this way.
GTCC's dental hygiene program was above and beyond what was expected. I value every learning experience from the entire dental faculty.
GTCC needs to make an early call on bad weather and post on Fox8.
GTCC needs to make calls on bad weather much sooner! They also need to post it on
Fox8!
I thought being able to work as a Student X-Ray Tech was a valuable experience.
Learning while being paid is great. Too bad it ends when I graduate.
GTCC is a great college and I am appreciative to faculty and staff for their wonderful assistance.
This school needs a makeover on the school. The worst school ever.
I am glad to have been able to attend GTCC. GTCC has given me the opportunity to complete an unfinished task that I started 20 years ago, a college degree. GTCC was
instrumental in offering me financial aid, counseling, and a plethora of excellent instructors and staff.
I enjoyed being on the High Point campus because of the environment. The students and instructors made you feel comfortable.
I am glad I had the opportunity to attend GTCC; it has been an excellent experience.
I am so glad I had the opportunity to attend Guilford Technical Community College. It was a great experience.
I had a great experience at GTCC, but I felt like I was set up for failure by the curriculum of your biology department.
I am thankful for the instructors that challenged me. This helped me to realize that I had more inside of me than I thought I did; and it feels good!
I really enjoyed my learning experience at GTCC! I would definitely recommend GTCC to others. Was most disappointed in the "Scheduling/Estimating" classes, that they were not able to offer access and training in "Software Applications" that are commonly used in the "Construction Management" field. We were told repeatedly that GTCC had these applications, but that they "were not functional or instructors were not trained on them".
Regardless, they were never made available to any of the classes that I was enrolled in.
The last class I took attic (CIV-230, Fall 2012) had serious problems and left a bad impression at the end. Instructor had English as a 2nd language and students struggled to understand him and he seemed to struggle to understand students questions and comments. Class information on Moodle was carried over from a previous semester with inaccurate information and due dates on assignments. Students would often start an assignment early in the week and notice that the requirements had been changed later in the week. Requirements and data used to complete assignments were sometimes changed on the evening they were to be turned in. Students were having to redo final "class projects" in class on the night they were to be turned in because of instructor changes. No color printer was available to students and the quality of the printed materials suffered.
The entire class suffered with turning in assignments and then not having a grade show up. Instructor would say that he did not get the assignment. Students had to do assignmnets more that one time because of this. Students learned quickly to save electronic copies of all assignmnets, because they would likely have to produce them again at a later time. Instructor was knowledgeable about subject matter, but had no experience with class management in Moodle prior to the semester starting. Student stress level was high in this class.
I did not know due date to submit graduation application until I checked the paper, 5 days after the due date. Please be more informative about such important ssubject.
It was tough to work full-time and go to school, but GTCC allows so many different classes and times that it made it easier.
Overall, I would say that the institution has a communication problem, cooperation seems to be the exception to the normal, and lacks the ability to foster a fulfilling educational experience.
I have enjoyed attending GTCC. I have learned many new things, and feel prepared to move forward with education goals.
Most teachers have very high standards, and those are the ones that I have learned the most from. I like the diversity of students here, and I have learned to work in groups. I wish the AT computer lab was open later in the evening because I get most of my homework done there.
Quality of instructors matter. I think that paralegals should not teach in this paralegal program unless they are really qualified i.e 10 + year of experience in the field and teaching experience.
For the most part I found the nursing program to be somewhat disorganized. Especially in my early classes. There are a few very good instructors within the program, but some that truly shouldn't be teaching. Some do it out of a desire to help and teach, while others it just seems to be a job. There are some fabulous clinical instructors and some that just shouldn't be doing it. There are a couple that thrive on intimidation and making people feel stupid. I was actually blessed to several very good clinical instructors for the most part, but some of my fellow students were not so lucky.
I have become friends with many here at GTCC and will keep in close contact with many. This has been a great learning experence for me .
The application, registration, financial aid process is the WORST that I have ever experienced and I have attended 5 colleges and universities. The cattle call that we have to deal with is atrocious. If you only need to pick up a transcript, get a signature, etc you
SHOULD NOT have to wait after every person that's there to do anything having to do with records, registration, financial aid, advising, etc. This process needs to be split up and streamlined. Possibly answer the phone every once and a while too. If all you have is a question, it would be great if the phone didn't ring incessantly. If someone would actually answer it and answer your question, or maybe have a better FAQ on the website that would answer questions, it would be awesome! Again, having to wait in line after every bum off the street that hasn't even changed out of their pajamas or arranged for child care before piling into the waiting room.
I enjoyed being here at GTCC. my experience here was great. I should have came here first but i didnt know that what I wanted to pursue was at Greensboro campus. overall enjoyed being here.
Even though some program instructors teach the same material at 4-year institutions the classes from GTCC don't transfer for credit at those instituitions. Also, the volume of students and economic cut-backs decrease the personal feel of the college by limiting the interaction of administrative personnel with students. I used to call and be able to speak
to someone, now, I get a recording that says no one will answer or return my call...at least from the admissions office.
