GENERAL EDUCATION GOAL STATEMENT
The General Education Goals are designed to ensure that graduates of Tulsa Community College have the skills,
knowledge and attitudes to carry them successfully through their work and their personal lives. General
Education Goals relevant to this course include Critical Thinking and Effective Communication.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
The primary objective of this course is to give the student a good foundation for using algebra in future
applications. Upon completion of the course the student should be able to understand and apply the following
(summarized) concepts:
Use function notation; find domain and range; solve and graph linear equations; solve absolute value equations
and inequalities; solve systems of equations and inequalities; perform the fundamental operations on algebraic
fractions and radicals; simplify complex fractions; solve variation problems; simplify and work with complex
numbers; apply the rules of exponents with positive, negative and fractional exponents; solve quadratic
equations; solve word problems by algebraic methods; apply analytical reasoning and problem solving
techniques to a variety of situations.
TEACHING METHODS
Class time will consist of lecture and student participation.
ADA POLICY
DISABILITY RESOURCES: It is the policy and practice of Tulsa Community College to create inclusive
learning environments. Accommodations for qualifying students in compliance with the Americans with
Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act are available. To request accommodations,
contact the Education Access Center (EAC) at eac@tulsacc.edu or call (918) 595-7115 (Voice). Deaf and hard
of hearing students may text (918) 809-1864.
EVALUATION TECHNIQUES
Your grade will depend upon the scores you earn in the four areas below:




MyMathLab Homework:
Quizzes, Classwork and Worksheets:
Exams (3):
Final Exam:
10%
25%
40%
25%
MyMathLab Homework
MyMathLab Homework sets will be assigned and due regularly. Homework must be done using the online
MyMathLab program whose access license accompanies your textbook. At the end of the semester your
average homework percentage will be used to calculate your score.
Quizzes, Classwork and Worksheets
Quizzes will be given regularly at the beginning of class. Topics will always be announced in advance. You
will not be allowed to use books or scratch paper during quizzes. For some quizzes, I will allow you to use
approved notes. Calculators may not be shared during quizzes. If you are absent on a day that a quiz occurs, you
will not be able to make up those points.
Classwork will consist of problems you will be asked to complete in class. You will often be allowed to use
your notes and/or book when doing classwork. Often you may be working with your classmates as a team. To
earn your points, you are expected to participate, not use your cell phone or do something else while your
teammates do all the work! If you are absent on a day that classwork occurs, you will not be able to make up
those points.
2
Worksheets will be sets of take-home problems, typically due at the next class meeting. Worksheets will be
accepted one class meeting late, with a penalty.
Exams
There will be 3 exams, each covering material from several chapters. They will be worth 100 points each. You
will not be allowed to use books or scratch paper during exams. For some exams, I will allow you to use
approved notes. Calculators may not be shared during exams. See the calendar in this syllabus for exam dates.
If you miss an exam you will receive a score of zero. Exams cannot be made up. See the section of this
syllabus on MAKE-UP AND LATE ASSIGNMENTS POLICY for more details.
Final Exam
There will be a comprehensive computerized departmental final exam, given through the MyMathLab program.
You may not use your own books, notes, or scratch paper during this exam. Calculators may not be shared
during this exam.
Common finals are given to all Beginning & Intermediate Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, and College Algebra
classes. To assist students in preparing for these exams, the following policies have been established.
1.
The common final will be the only exam for this class given during finals week.
2.
Each student should receive instructions for accessing a sample final.
3.
Students may use a calculator.
4.
A list of standard formulas will be supplied with the exam. (College Algebra Only)
5.
Students who do not earn a raw score of at least 50% may not receive an A, B, or C for the
course. Any exceptions to this must be appealed by your instructor to the Division Chair.
Also, your final exam percentage can be used to replace one of your first three exam scores. This will be
especially important if you miss an exam, as it is the only way to make up those points.
Grading Scale
Your final grade will be based upon the overall percentage that you have earned, *assuming that you score at
least 50% on the final exam. You can check on your current grade at any time during the semester by going to
our Blackboard site.

MAKE-UP AND LATE ASSIGNMENTS POLICY
MyMathLab homework sections can be completed up to 2 days after the due date, but a 15% penalty will be
applied. Any worksheet or assignment not turned in at the start of class on the due date is considered late. It
does not matter why it could not be handed in on time. I will take papers up to one class meeting late, but a
penalty of 1 to 5 points will be assessed. Missed classwork and quizzes cannot be made up. I will drop several
homework, classwork and quiz scores at the end of the semester, so you can afford to miss a few of these
without hurting your grade.
I will not give make-up exams, however, your lowest exam score (of exams #1 - #3) can be replaced at the end
of the semester with your final exam percentage. (EXCEPTION: I will allow make-ups for exams missed due
to bad weather, if they are taken within 2 weekdays (Mon – Thu) of the original test date. Be sure to contact me
3
ASAP if you miss a test due to weather but TCC is not closed. If TCC is closed due to weather on an exam day,
the exam will be postponed for everyone until the next class meeting when TCC reopens.)
Please do not make your explanations about missing or late work in front of your classmates. If you feel you
need to talk to me about why a worksheet was late, or why you missed an exam, please do so outside of class.
ATTENDANCE
Students should be familiar with the college policies on attendance and withdrawal from courses. Attendance
and class participation are necessary in math classes and are expected by your instructor. Students who are
absent from class for any reason are responsible for material covered and for any assignments, announcements
or changes in schedule made in their absence. See the section MAKE-UP AND LATE ASSIGNMENTS
POLICY in this syllabus for more details.
COURSE WITHDRAWAL
The deadline to withdraw from a course shall not exceed 3/4 the duration of any class. Check the TCC
Academic Calendar on Blackboard for the deadline that applies to the course(s). Begin the process with a
discussion with the faculty member assigned to the course. Contact the Advisement Office at any TCC campus
to initiate withdrawal from a course ('W' grade) or to change from Credit to Audit. Withdrawal and/or change to
an audit from a course after the drop/add period can alter the financial aid award for the current and future
semesters. Students may receive an outstanding bill from TCC if the recalculation leaves a balance due to TCC.
Students who stop participating in the course and fail to withdraw may receive a course grade of “F,” which may
have financial aid consequences for the student .
Students who enroll in this class but fail to attend during the first two weeks of class, will be withdrawn
Saturday, January 26, 2013, for non-attendance.
BAD WEATHER
TCC rarely closes. If extreme weather conditions or emergency situations arise, TCC always gives cancellation
notices to radio and television stations. This information is also posted on the TCC website, www.tulsacc.edu.
You can sign up for the TCC Alerts system on www.tulsacc.edu. This system will automatically send closing
information to any phone numbers and email addresses you supply to it. If TCC is closed due to weather, I will
not hold classes. Any exams or quizzes scheduled for that day are automatically postponed until the next class
meeting. Bad weather/driving conditions are always an acceptable reason for missing an exam (provided that
you call and schedule a make up!). Please consider your own safety first.
LEARNING SUPPORT SERVICES
The Math Lab, located in room SE 8150, is a great place to study alone or with others. It has various study aids
specific to this course. There are solution manuals, videos and self-paced tutorial computer programs. You may
use the computers there to complete your MyMathLab homework assignments. There are also friendly tutors
who can answer some questions for you. Students are encouraged to take advantage of this FREE facility. No
appointments are needed. Please be sure to sign in and out and follow lab rules concerning food in the computer
areas.
Hours: Mon – Thu 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. / Fri 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. / Sat 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
CLASSROOM ETIQUETTE
Please be courteous to your classmates and to me:
 Open and mutually respectful communication of varied opinions, beliefs, and perspectives during classroom
or online discussion encourages the free exchange of ideas that is essential to higher learning and to the
ability to learn from each other.
 Tulsa Community College rules clearly state that unenrolled children are NOT ALLOWED in classrooms.
If your child is ill, or has a day off from school, please do not bring him/her to class with you.
4




Music devices or any device with headphones including, but not limited to, radios, CD players and MP3
players must be off and put away at all times while in the classroom.
Laptop and tablet computers such as iPads may not be used during class.
Cell phones must be off and put away (NOT IN YOUR LAP!) during classwork, quizzes and exams.
Failure to abide by this rule will result in a score of zero. If you need to step outside to take an occasional
phone call you may do so as long as it is not a regular occurrence. If your calls and/or texting become what
I consider an unreasonable disruption to my class I will give you the option to change your behavior or be
permanently withdrawn from class.
Immature or disrespectful behavior that is construed by me as disruptive to any or all of your classmates is
absolutely unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Such behavior includes, but is not limited to, cell phone
use as outlined above, use of music devices, and:
a. Conversations with classmates – during lectures, quizzes and tests you should not talk to your
neighbors, even if it is to ask about something I am doing in lecture. You are ALWAYS welcome
to ask me questions, but please do not disturb those around you. This includes whispering!
b. Regularly arriving late – YOU registered for this class at this time of day. It should be a time that
you can meet. I don’t mind an occasional late entry, and am especially forgiving on bad weather
days when travel can be slow.
c. Leaving early – when you come to class I expect you to stay until class is finished. If you have a
valid appointment and must leave early once or twice during the semester, just be sure to make me
aware of it BEFORE class begins.
d. Eating – you may not eat in the classroom, but you are welcome to have a beverage. Please clean
up any spills. Cough drops are okay!
Disruptive students will be given the option to change their behavior or leave class for the day,
forfeiting any points already earned or to be earned for that session.
TOBACCO FREE COLLEGE
Tulsa Community College is a Tobacco Free college in accordance with the Governor’s Executive Order 201201 and Title 63 of the Oklahoma Statutes, Section 1-1523 which prohibits smoking or the use of any tobacco
products in all public places, in any indoor workplace, and all vehicles owned by the State of Oklahoma and all
of its agencies and instrumentalities. This Order includes property leased, rented, or owned by TCC including,
but not limited to, all grounds, buildings, facilities, and parking lots. Tulsa Community College’s policy
includes a tobacco free environment on all campus and off-campus locations conducting TCC credit or noncredit classes. The TCC Campus Police is responsible for ensuring compliance with the Tobacco Free
Environment Policy. Violations of the policy may be addressed through issuance of campus or state citations.
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY OR MISCONDUCT
Academic dishonesty (cheating) is defined as the deception of others about one’s own work or about the work of
another. Academic dishonesty or misconduct is not condoned or tolerated at campuses within the Tulsa
Community College system. Tulsa Community College adopts a policy delegating certain forms of authority for
disciplinary action to the faculty. Such disciplinary actions delegated to the faculty include, but are not limited
to, the dismissal of disrespectful or disorderly students from classes. In the case of academic dishonesty a
faculty member may:
 Require the student to redo an assignment or test, or require the student to complete a substitute
assignment or test;
 Record a "zero" for the assignment or test in question;
 Recommend to the student that the student withdraw from the class, or administratively withdraw the
student from the class;
 Record a grade of "F" for the student at the end of the semester. In this case, a student who has been
found responsible for academic dishonesty in a course may not drop or withdraw from the course. If the
student processes a drop or withdrawal from the course, the action will be reversed and the appropriate
grade will be recorded on the student’s transcript.
 Request that disciplinary action be taken against a student at the administrative level by submitting such
a request to the Dean of Student Services.
