2014 - A record 73.4 million passengers made journeys through Heathrow in 2014, an increase of 1.4% on 2013. Fast-growing emerging markets continue to be a driver of traffic growth at Heathrow, with passenger volumes up 6.3% to Latin America, 5.2% to East Asia and 3.5% to the Middle East & Central Asia. Growth of 2.5% in transfer passenger volumes at the UK’s only hub attracted more long-haul flights to growth markets like China and
Mexico.
January – Heathrow welcomed 5.45 million passengers travelling through the airport’s terminals, an increase of 1.3% on January 2014. Larger, fuller, quieter aircraft at Heathrow continued to be a driver for passenger growth. Seats per aircraft increased 2.0% to 209.0, while load factors increased 0.2 percentage points to 70.7%. Passengers per aircraft rose
2.2% to 147.7. Within emerging markets, passenger volumes were particularly strong to
Latin America – with Mexico increasing 17.9% and Brazil 4.7%. The Middle East & Central
Asia also saw growth of 4.9% and passenger volumes to China grew 2.0%. Heathrow continued to welcome an increasing number of the transfer passengers that make such longhaul routes viable, with year-on-year volumes up 4.3%.
February – Heathrow saw another record month in February with 4.95 million passengers travelling through the UK’s only hub airport, an increase of 1.1% on February 2014.
Operating at capacity, passenger growth at Heathrow was primarily driven by larger, quieter aircraft deployed at the airport. Seats per aircraft increased 1.8% to 205.1 while load factors remained at 69.3% and passengers per aircraft rose 1.7% to 142.1. Emerging markets continued to perform strongly, with passenger volumes increasing 23.5% to China, 14.9% to
Mexico and 10.9% to Brazil in addition to robust performance on North American segments where volumes increased 4.3%. Heathrow continued to be a hub of choice for the transfer passengers that make such long-haul routes viable, with year-on-year volumes up a significant 5.0%
Heathrow brings business to Columbia
Representatives from Heathrow took part in a successful trade mission to Colombia, South
America's fastest growing economy and an exciting export market for British business last month. The mission was led by former government minister, Kenneth Clarke MP, in conjunction with London Chamber of Commerce (LCCI) and sponsored by Heathrow. It saw firms from several sectors including infrastructure, design, the built environment and solar energy meet with potential trading partners and identify new business opportunities. It also saw the signing of an MOU between the London Chamber of Commerce and its counterpart, the Bogota Chamber of Commerce, promising to bring closer dialogue and support to businesses in the UK and Colombia, particularly SMEs.
Building on the success of the flight from Heathrow to Bogota, talks are now underway to increase the service from four times weekly to a daily direct this summer. Research has shown that one of the key factors to increasing trade with emerging markets is a direct air link, with up to 20 times more trade possible when there is a one. Independent analysis by
Frontier Economics assesses that the route increase could create 400 jobs for the UK
economy and an additional £111 million in economic benefit over the next ten years, not to mention the benefits to the Colombian economy in encouraging investment and tourism.

Financial results for year end 2014
Heathrow’s financial results show improved performance in several areas which includes the highest passenger satisfaction of all European hub airports in 2014 and strong operational performance.
The busiest year ever, with 73.4 million passengers served, up 1.4%, but no real growth in flights.
There was strong financial performance, with revenue up 8.8% to £2.7 billion and EBITDA up
10.3% to £1.57 billion. An £11 billion transformation programme was completed with the successful opening of Terminal 2: The Queen’s Terminal, on time and on budget. Heathrow has moved into a more modest investment period, generating cash after capital investment and interest for the first time in over a decade.

Policy and sustainability issues
Heathrow responds to calls for world - class noise insulation scheme
Last month Heathrow unveiled new plans to provide insulation to homes, if the Government gives planning approval for a third runway. The newly proposed scheme would cover a zone based on the 55 decibel noise contour, the preferred measure of noise used by the
European Union and the Mayor of London.
This noise insulation offer goes above and beyond UK policy requirements, expands on
Heathrow’s previous proposals and is comparable to those offered by other European hub airports. In total, Heathrow estimates that over £700 million could be spent through this insulation package, an increase of over £450 million from that previously offered by
Heathrow in its May 2014 submission to the Airports Commission, and an increase of over
£610 million from its previous proposals for a third runway.
The scheme is based on two newly designated insulation zones, and residents would be eligible regardless of whether they experience noise under existing flight paths or will be newly affected by noise from a new runway. Under the proposed scheme, homes in the designated zone closest to the airport with higher levels of noise stand to have the full costs of their noise insulation covered by the airport. In addition, up to £3,000 in noise insulation would be offered to homes further away from the airport.
In total, over 160,000 homes could be eligible for insulation in areas from Windsor in the west to Richmond in the east. Over 35,000 homes in Hounslow alone would be eligible for full costs of the noise insulation package, with all homes in Heston and Cranford eligible.
Similarly, all homes within the towns and villages of Wraysbury, Datchet, Sipson,
Harmondsworth, Harlington, Colnbrook, Brands Hill and Stanwell Moor would be covered by the scheme.
The improved noise insulation package follows public consultations held between 21st July and 12th October in 2014.
Jobs and Careers Fair
The 8 th Heathrow Jobs and Careers Fair was held at the Hilton Hotel Heathrow Airport
Terminal 5 on Tuesday 10 February 2015. The day welcomed school groups, individual job seekers and parents.
The event is about supporting local young people and inspiring future career paths. As the
UK’s only hub airport, Heathrow has a unique role to play in boosting jobs, skills and supporting economic growth both locally and nationally. We want Heathrow to be seen as a career destination for young people to realise their potential and fulfil their ambitions; there is a career at Heathrow, not just a job.
As part of Heathrow’s community investment programme Heathrow has worked in partnership with local borough and education partners. The aim of the event is to help guide the future career paths of local young people aged between 16 and 24 who live in
Ealing, Hillingdon, Hounslow, Slough and Spelthorne.
The fair welcomed 4,922 visitors from schools and college groups between 9.30am and
3.30pm and the evening session between 3.30pm and 7.00pm was aimed at young people aged 15 - 24 and their parents.
Heathrow Secondary School Challenge
Secondary schools from across Ealing, Hillingdon, Hounslow, Slough and Spelthorne have been invited to take part in the half day Challenge, which asks Year 8 students to build a T5
Track Transit System, which is the automated transportation system that transfers passengers between the main terminal and satellite buildings.
The activity provides an enjoyable way for young people to explore their enterprise skills, develop social and personal skills, encourage team working and build communications skills.
This free programme is supported by current Heathrow Apprentices, Engineering Managers, and employee volunteers. The activity will take place from Tuesday 24th March to
Wednesday 13th May.
