BUILDING DNA Building DNA requires a step by step approach Get the K^NEX box of DNA parts. Work in groups. Each box has a booklet that explains each part of the DNA molecule. Make sure you are well versed on each part. Show me each part before you continue to the next part. 1. PARTS OF DNA List the parts of a DNA molecule. Include all four of the base pairs. The 2 H bond and the 3 H bond. Phosphate and deoxyribose sugar. (Pg 3) TAKE PICTURE OF EACH PART. . 1. deoxyribose sugar- white (parent strand) 2. 2- Hydrogen bond 3. 3-hydrogen bond 4. thymine 5. adenine 6. cytosine 7. guanine 8. phosphate group 2. DNA STRUCTURE Following this sequence : Adenine Thymine Cytosine guanine 1. Individually build each of the FOUR nucleotides. Label. (Pg 3) use your laptop to take a picture 2. 3. Connect the 4 base nucleotides to each other in a straight line.. (pg 4) use your laptop to take a picture 4. Build four more bases and connect them properly (remember to determine if they are double-triple hydrogen bonds between the nucleotides.) (pg 5) use your laptop to take a picture - COMPLETED DNA DOUBLE HELIX 3. REPLICATION: 1. Use your hand to represent helicase to break the hydrogen bond between the two strands. Take a picture 2. Use your hand to represent polymerase and pick up free nucleotides to attach the daughter nucleotides to parent nucleotides. REMEMBER TO REPRESENT LAGGING AND LEADING STRAND IN YOUR POWER POINT EXPLAIN. use your laptop to take a picture OF EACH. 3. Use your laptop to take a picture of the two NEW daughter DNA molecules POWERPOINT: Use your pictures to create a learning powerpoint that explains the structure of NUCLEIC ACID, DNA, AND REPLICATION. PUT IN TURNITIN. DUE FRIDAY 12/18
