Barriers to addressing obesity in
minority children and adolescents.
• Environmental Barriers
– To physical activity
2,3,5
• high neighborhood crime rates that discourage outdoor activities
• dilapidated parks, and
• reduced access to facilities
– To good nutrition
2,4,5
• more fast-food restaurants
• few supermarkets that carry fresh produce
• small grocery stores that sell high-fat, energy-dense foods
• greater exposure to televised commercials for high-calorie, lownutrient food
• Cultural Barriers5
• Those who do not maintain normal weight outnumber those who
do; thus, overweight is often the community norm.
• Caloric restriction and leisure-time physical activity are not
routine in minority communities.
CBC- Braintrust on Obesity, 2007 Drs. Kathy Burke & Starr Eaddy
6
• 59% of New Jerseyans are obese or
overweight, 60% of adults, 10% of teens
• In NJ, the age groups most at risk are the
45-64 year olds at 26.3% and 28.7%
obesity
(NJ DHSS7/2006)
• • New Jersey has the highest incidence in
the nation in obesity among low-income
kids aged 2-5 years. (F as in Fat, 2005)

• The Meadowlands Environment Center was formed to increase
awareness and enjoyment of our vital ecosystem. The New
Jersey Meadowlands Commission and Ramapo College of New
Jersey entered into a partnership in 2003, to develop a
comprehensive environmental education program for schools
and the general public.
• The Meadowlands Environment Center has hands on
educational programs for grades K-12. Our experienced team of
educators will introduce your students to a variety of topics
while satisfying the NJCCCS. Through inquiry learning and
cross-curricular activites, you and your students will experience
the best of these unique wetlands.
