Principles of Business, Marketing and Finance Course Syllabus Teacher Amy Venghaus Phone (979) 732-5746 Room 17 E-mail venghaus.amy@columbusisd.org Tutorials: Morning and Afternoons Conference: 9:33-10:23 each day Course Description: In Principles of Business, Marketing, and Finance, students gain knowledge and skills in economies and private enterprise systems, the impact of global business, marketing of goods and services, advertising, and product pricing. Students analyze the sales process and financial management principles. This course allows students to reinforce, apply, and transfer academic knowledge and skills to a variety of interesting and relevant activities, problems and settings in business, marketing, and finance. Methods of Instruction: Class lectures, class discussions, interpersonal and small group activities, presentations. Course Requirements: Students should have some knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Publisher) Materials Required: Pen, Pencil, 3-Ring Binder, paper, 1 spiral notebook, Index Note Cards Textbook: No class textbook Class Rules/Expectations: Classroom Rules Be on time. You will be tardy if not in the classroom when the tardy bell rings. Use the restroom, go to your locker and take care of other business on your own time, not during class time. Four minutes between classes is plenty of time. No food or drinks - bottled water only (but not by the computers) No Profanity – no one wants to hear it Pick up your trash and materials before you leave the classroom – a clean room is a happy room No cell phones, i-pods, etc… (unless used for in-class activities) They will be confiscated No Cheating or plagiarism. If you are caught cheating on any assignment, project, or test or speech, you will receive a grade of ZERO for that assignment. Take responsibility for yourself and your own learning. Class participation is essential. Come to class each day ready to participate. Be willing to talk to me. Students will stay in their assigned seat at all times Do not roll the chairs around the classroom. Stand up and push them to the tables when instructed. Failure to follow this rule will result in you standing for the remainder of the class period. The teacher dismisses the class, not the bell Observe the student dress code and the student code of conduct in the handbook. Your grades will be posted on the wall each week using your Student ID number. RESPECT. This means respect for your teacher, your classmates and the equipment. Homework policy: You will have homework in this class. There are many concepts to cover in this class and you will be expected to complete assignments outside of the classroom. Grading policy: Major Grades- 40% (Projects, Tests, Speeches) Minor Grades- 50% (worksheets, quizzes, etc) Work Ethic/Participation-10% (Come to class prepared each day) Late Work: The student will have one opportunity to turn in the late work with a grade no higher than a 75. Make-up Work: The student will have 3 days to make up missed assignments after an absence. School related absences should be arranged by the student before the absence. Topics to be covered: 1st 6 weeks - Business: characteristics of businesses, ethics, types of businesses, economic systems, international business, businesses role in government, etc. 2nd 6 weeks – Marketing: web, branding and packaging, customer knowledge, competition, SWOT analysis, retail, buying vs. selling, supply vs. demand, forms of marketing, advertising, commercials, etc. 3rd 6 weeks – Finance: personal budgets, personal finance, finance in a business setting, payroll, cost and profit analysis, banking, investments, credit, debit, etc. Signature Page By signing below you are acknowledging that: I agree to the terms, rules, and expectations listed in the syllabus. I will participate fully in class discussions, group projects and on individual work. I agree to log in to one and ONLY one computer in Room 17. This will be my computer for the remainder of the semester. I also understand that grades and grade averages will be posted by student I.D. number each week.
