Metric Conversions #1 With the metric system you have the ability to change a number from one unit to another with relative ease by just changing the prefix and the number of zeroes before or after it. For example 10,000m is equal to 10 km. 100,000 cm is equal to 1000 m or 1 km. This makes it easy to take a measurement and transfer it into an easily expressed similar unit. For example, it would be much easier to count by label every 4 centimeters, as opposed to every 0.00004 km. The basic prefixes for the metric system are kilo (1000), hecto (100), deka (10), base (1), deci (.1), centi (.01) and milli (.001). The most common prefixes are kilo, base, centi and milli, which will be what we use to convert back and forth in 8th grade.
