Metric Conversions #1
With the metric system you have the ability to change a number from one unit to another with relative ease by
just changing the prefix and the number of zeroes before or after it. For example 10,000m is equal to 10 km. 100,000
cm is equal to 1000 m or 1 km. This makes it easy to take a measurement and transfer it into an easily expressed similar
unit. For example, it would be much easier to count by label every 4 centimeters, as opposed to every 0.00004 km.
The basic prefixes for the metric system are kilo (1000), hecto (100), deka (10), base (1), deci (.1), centi (.01) and milli
(.001). The most common prefixes are kilo, base, centi and milli, which will be what we use to convert back and forth in
8th grade. The other beautiful thing about the metric system is that the prefixes apply to all of the quantities that are
measured (mass, length, volume, energy, power, etc).

As you filled in the chart for the earlier metric conversions, hopefully you picked up on the patterns that emerge.
You can convert from one unit to another unit by just moving the decimal. Try
