Dear Parent/Guardian: Loudoun County School District is committed to providing a quality Physical Education program that builds knowledge, fitness, movement skills, social well-being and confidence, so that all students can enjoy a healthy and active lifestyle. Understanding how fitness affects general long-term health and performance will empower students to make informed decisions about their lives. As part of this curriculum, students will receive developmentally appropriate instruction in topics such as: development of motor and movement skills, the components of fitness, goal setting, nutrition, physical activity strategies, and personal-social development. In physical education your child will also participate in fitness measurements to evaluate their current fitness levels in the following four components of fitness: • Cardiorespiratory endurance will be assessed by the PACER • Muscular strength and muscular endurance will be assessed by the curl-up & push-up tests • Flexibility will be assessed by the back saver sit & reach test Your child’s fitness levels are compared to the minimum health-related standards that have been developed for children of the same age and sex. National standards and protocols for the above fitness measurements are derived from the Cooper Institute’s set of assessment procedures, scoring guidelines and defined healthy fitness zone standards. Fitness measurements will consist of 3 phases: pre-measurements, goal setting, and post measurements. This systematic approach to the development of fitness begins to build a value of how to maintain or improve individual fitness. WELNET® will simplify the process of gathering student fitness data while providing historical data to demonstrate change and progress. Your child will have the ability to access his/her own personal WELNET® Fitness Profile, fitness scores and history from any internet-enabled device at school or off campus. As a parent/guardian, you will be able to track your child’s fitness scores and progress through system-generated reports to be able to discuss your child’s progress in meeting health standards together. To access your child’s WELNET® information, please go to www.focusedfitness.org and enter in your child’s student ID for username and then the password is their last name. Students can change their passwords once they have logged in. Your log-in information will be the same as your child’s. If you have any questions about our fitness testing procedures or the WELNET® system, please contact your child’s respective Health & Physical Education teacher at 571-252-2200 or via email at Carolyn.Cleveland@lcps.org, Randall.May@lcps.org, Mickey.Thompson@lcps.org or William.Rice@lcps.org.
