SYLLABUS FOR SOCIOLOGY
DESCRIPTION:
Sociology is a one-semester elective course which examines the role of the individual within
society, as well as a wide variety of complex social environments around the world and
throughout history.
MATERIALS:
Students are to have a notebook (a three-ring binder with pockets and blank paper) devoted
exclusively to social science, and an ample supply of pens and pencils. The text is the seventh
edition (2011) of Society in Focus: An Introduction to Sociology, written by William E.
Thompson and Joseph V. Hickey, published by Pearson, Allyn and Bacon.
RULES:
All students are expected to abide by all school policies outlined in the Maine East Student
Handbook and the Maine Township High School Guide to Discipline. Additional class rules and
regulations are detailed in the handout, "MR. Z'S RULES & GUIDELINES."
GRADES:
Grades will be determined on a running point total basis for the duration of each semester, with
90.0% of the total possible points equaling the lowest possible A, 80.0% the lowest possible B,
70.0% the lowest possible C, and 60.0% the lowest possible D. There will be various grading
categories of roughly equal weight, including tests and quizzes, homework, notes, and projects.
The following assignments are generally worth the following points:
Homework, worksheets, extra credit
Quizzes
Tests & major projects
5 - 25 points
20 - 50 points
75 - 250 points
There will be a test at the end of each unit. The midterm and final exams are comprehensive.
UNITS OF STUDY:
Units of study in this course include Introduction to Social Science and Sociology, the
Sociological Perspective, Social Framework, Social Differentiation and Inequality, Social
Institutions, and Social Change. Certain holidays will be viewed from sociological perspectives
as well.
