st 1 Grade Coffee Talk 2013-2014 1 Attendance • Being in school everyday is a priority. • As soon as the 8:20 bell rings, our day begins. If a student comes in after 8:20, they must report to the office for a tardy pass. • Make sure your child is present and in school on time everyday, so they are not left out of any activities. • If your child is absent, please make sure to send in a note the following school day. • Mondays and Fridays are especially important for your child to be present. • Please try to schedule appointments after school. 2 School Security • After the 8:35 bell rings, all school doors will be locked except for the main school entrance. • All visitors must report to the main office, to get a pass. • For your child’s safety, please exit the school as soon as your child is in the classroom. • Your child’s safety is our priority! 3 SAT’s for Parents What should you know about the SAT’s? 4 What is the SAT? SAT=Standard Achievement Test • The SAT is a test given to students in Kindergarten through Second grade to assess their knowledge in Reading & Mathematics. • Multiple choice questions • Two days of testing (one reading session & one math session) 5 When is the SAT Test? Week of April 7th – 11th Reading Math 6 How to prepare your child for the SAT’s? • Make sure your child completes their Reading and Math SAT packets. • Make sure they work on it independently. • Your job is to review and check it daily. • For Reading, remind your child to go back in the story and underline where they found the answer. • For Math, you may read the question to your child, but they must work out the problem and answer it on their own. 7 What to do on test days? Make sure your child: • Arrives to school on time • Gets a good night’s sleep • Eats a healthy breakfast • Be positive and encourage your child to do their best! 8 Test Taking Strategies *Below are test taking strategies that we do with the students in class that you can do with your child at home. • Make sure to carefully read each question (Reread if necessary). • Go back in the story and underline the answers. • Do not spend too much time on any one question (If the question is too difficult, skip it and come back to it later). • Read ALL answer choices and mark your x’s. 9 • Eliminate the answers that you know are silly or wrong, then select the best answer. • Do NOT leave ANY questions unanswered (They will be marked wrong) . • In math make sure to show ALL your work (Do NOT do the work in your head) . • If finished before time is up, go back and check each answer . 10 Helpful Websites • Ticket To Read- A useful website for Reading Comprehension. • Spelling City- A useful website to learn and practice weekly spelling words. • Starfall- A useful website to practice letter recognition and sounds. • Riverdeep- A useful website for Reading and Mathematics. • Think Central- Math books online • Connect ED- Reading books onlinel *All of these websites can be found on our school website at http://beckham.dadeschools.net *Students may also go through the student portal. 11 Any Questions? 12 Thank you for coming! 13
