Career Expl oration
Changes to myfuture
This month (November 2013) myfuture, Australia’s career information and exploration
service website, will be updated. The new website will provide information and
resources in the following key sections:
Getting started will encourage career pathway exploration in secondary and
tertiary students and graduates. It will give tips for connecting with people in
industry and finding work experience, as well as practical tools like sample
resumes and cover letters for those entering the workforce for the first time.
Change direction will provide career information for people seeking a career
change, including those returning to work after an absence or those facing
retrenchment.
Assist your child will include activity ideas for parents and carers, from
introducing young children to the world of work to supporting older children with
their career decision-making.
Tools and resources will feature supportive tools and activities for career
practitioners and teachers to help primary and secondary students to learn about
careers and the world of work and to develop career plans.
Explore careers will allow you to browse occupation, industry and labour market
information, and search for university and VET courses and providers across
Australia.
My career profile (formerly My Guide) will continue as a free tool for
personalised career exploration. Activities in this section will help you develop
your career profile and explore career ideas and options in line with your profile.

Upgrading pathways
'Upgrading' means doing something that will give you a better tertiary entrance score
to help you gain entry into your preferred course, usually in the following year. Some
of these pathways can be built into your current list of QTAC preferences (e.g. the
'foot-in-the-door' courses).
QTAC has a very useful information sheet on upgrading pathways at
http://www.qtac.edu.au/InfoSheets/UpgradingPathways.html. When choosing an
upgrade pathway you need to consider the following:








Will this pathway give me a high enough score to get into the course I want?
Will this pathway give me credit into the course in which I wish to gain entry?
Does the university to which I wish to gain entry accept this pathway?
Could this pathway lead to my second career preference?
Does this pathway match my learning style – will I be successful in it?
How much does this pathway cost?
How long will this pathway take me to upgrade sufficiently to gain entry to the
course I want?
Will this pathway give me the prerequisite subject I need to gain entry to the
course I want?
It is essential that you check with the institution to which you wish to gain entry that it
accepts the upgrade pathway you choose.
UQ’s Community Access Program (CAP)
The Faculty of Arts at the University of Queensland (UQ), through CAP, provides the
opportunity for members of the community to access Arts courses without
undertaking a whole degree or applying through QTAC. To apply you need to be at
least 18 years or have completed Year 12. You could explore this program as a
possible upgrade option. Visit http://www.arts.uq.edu.au/cap for more information.
What courses are offered at TAFE?
The TAFE Queensland website at http://www.tafe.qld.gov.au/abouttafe/publications/index.html has a number of useful publications that provide
information about the courses offered at the various TAFE institutes. The following
publications would be of particular interest to Year 12 students:

TAFE Queensland Guide
15

TAFE and University Pathways.

Occupational Informati on
Emerging ‘green’ jobs
The following information has been adapted from ‘The Green Jobs Market’, an article
from the Graduate Careers Australia website at
http://www.graduatecareers.com.au/CareerPlanningandResources/careerprofiles/Gre
enCollarSectorEmergingMarkets/index.htm.
Global social interest in addressing environmental issues, along with responses by
government regulators and industry, are creating jobs in a growing ‘green collar
sector’. This term refers to employment opportunities loosely related, but not limited,
to the climate change, energy and sustainability arenas.
Evolving key green areas are likely to create demand for graduates in roles such as
economists, mathematicians, marketers, public relations experts, legal professionals,
scientists, engineers and designers. Example areas include:













renewable energy generation and design (including solar, tidal, geothermal and
landfill gas power sources)
environmental impact assessment
energy management and distribution
carbon capture, storage, mitigation and management
climate change strategy and adaptation (e.g. the Carbon Pollution Reduction
Scheme, or CPRS)
public transport infrastructure development
manufacturing developments (e.g. electric cars)
building design and construction
engineering design
public policy and legislative development
advertising and marketing of green/environmentally sensitive initiatives
‘greening’ of existing companies and their practices
community engagement.
You can read more about green careers on the myfuture website at

QTAC a nd Tertiary E ntry
QTAC updates
Changing preferences
Year 12 students wanting to change preferences or add courses not previously listed
on their application, can do so on their online application via QTAC’s Current Applicant
online service (do not submit a new application!). Courses with fixed closing dates that
have passed cannot be added. The final date to change preferences for the 16 January
2014 major offer round is 8 January 2014. When changing preferences, make all
amendments before clicking the ‘save’ button. The first three times the ‘save’ button
is clicked, the changes are free. Further ‘saves’ will cost $34 each.
EAS – Educational Access Scheme
If you believe you have been disadvantaged in some way in your studies during Years
11 and 12, you can still apply for this scheme. Read about EAS and download the
required cover sheets at http://www.qtac.edu.au/ApplyingSAS/EduAccess.html. Remember that 16 December 2013 is the last date to submit
documentation to QTAC for the major offer round on 16 January 2014.
OP ineligible students can apply for tertiary study through QTAC
Students who complete Year 12 and do not qualify for an OP can apply for tertiary
courses through QTAC. When you apply through QTAC, you will be given a QTAC
selection rank based on your Year 12 results. You must still meet prerequisites (e.g.
subjects, audition, etc). You can download an information sheet at
http://www.qtac.edu.au/Applying-CurrentYr12/2012NonOp.html. Your QTAC
selection rank will be available on your application (accessed through QTAC’s Current
Applicant online service) on 30 December 2013.
Checking for an offer
Once an offer round has occurred, successful applicants will be advised by email that
they have an offer and to access their online application via the Current Applicant
online service to view and print their offer letter and to respond to the offer. Offer
letters are not mailed to applicants. Remember you receive one offer only at any given
offer round. If you were not offered a place into one of your preferred courses in the
21
major offer round, contact QTAC Information Services for further information about
why you were not successful in gaining a place.
Responding to an offer
See www.qtac.edu.au/InfoSheets/OffersResponses.html for information about the
options you have when responding to a QTAC offer. If a response has not been
received at QTAC by the specified date, you may automatically lose the course place
offered and not be considered in any future offer rounds.
Enrolment
In addition to responding to QTAC, you must complete the enrolment requirements of
the institution to which you have gained entry. You will be mailed an enrolment
package by the institution or linked from the QTAC website to the enrolment website
of the institution.
University information sessions for when you get your OP
Many universities hold information sessions in December for students who have
received their Year 12 results and are reviewing their QTAC preferences and/or
