Scientists have estimated that they have identified over 2.5 million organisms on earth. They still have over a million organisms to go. 2. Scientific classification is grouping organisms based on their similarities. 3. Some of these similarities include the characteristics that classify them as “Living”. These characteristics include: • • • • • • • • Made of Cells Reproduce Highly Organized Grow and develop Energy Respond to environment Evolve Genetic code made of DNA 4. Classification is the science of taxonomy. It helps compare a new species to an already known organism and decide what and how to name it. 5. The science of taxonomy and classification is very systematic. A taxon is a group of organisms that shares similar characteristics. There are 8 main groups of taxons or classifications. The levels of taxons from the most general to the most specific are: • • • • • • • • Domain Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species • • • • • • • • Dude! King Philip Came Over For Green salad 6. As we move through the different taxons, from kingdom to species, they become more unique or more specific. 7. Carolus Linnaeus developed this classification system used today as well as the naming technique called binomial nomenclature used by all scientist. 8. Binomial nomenclature gives the organism a two part scientific name. • For example, the common name dog has the scientific name Canis familiaris, • The common name red oak as the scientific name Acer rubrum . • The common name human has the scientific name Homo sapiens. • In binomial nomenclature, the Genus name is written first with the first letter capitalized and the species name is written second with the first letter lowercase. • So dogs belong to the Genus Canis • while the red oak tree belongs to the species rubrum • and humans belong to the Genus homo and the species sapiens 9. Latin words are used for the scientific names. 10. There are 3 domains: • Archea • Bacteria • Eukarya • Old or ancient bacteria • “bacteria” • Plants and animals 11. There are 6 kingdoms. The kingdoms in the order of what scientist believe to have inhabited the earth first to the most recent is… • • • • • • Archeabacteria Eubacteria Protista Fungi Plantae Animalia • • • • • • Attention Everyone!
