UNC Charlotte Methods Semester Clinical Experiences Second Semester Methods Courses • READ 3226: Teaching Reading to Intermediate grade Learners • ELED 3223: Teaching Social Studies to Elementary Grade Learners • ELED 3221: Teaching Science to Elementary Grade Learners • ELED 3226: Teaching Language Arts to Elementary Grade Learners • MAED 3224: Teaching Mathematics to Intermediate Grade Learners You must be in at least 3 (including Lang. Arts) to participate! Clinical Experience Improvements & Reasons to Celebrate!! • 2 week intensive clinical experience (40 hrs. minimum) – Weeks of Oct. 20th & 27th – Flexible time two weeks before and after – 5 hrs. prior to two weeks • Released from classes • Co-op teacher that is informed • UNC Charlotte faculty on site • Integrated assignments Handbook • Provides expectations, procedures, assignments, attendance log, evaluation form, etc. • READ, READ! Suggested timeline Timeline Activities Initial Meeting with • Classroom Introduction • Share Curriculum plans Co-op Teacher • Discuss potential SS/Science/Math/ Two-three weeks Reading lesson topics and objectives prior to start of clinical experience. • Conduct a Teacher Interview protocol • Develop a schedule for the two week Student will make experience that allows you to log contact to set this minimum 16 hours each week date. • Initial meeting can occur during or outside of school hours and should last no longer than one hour Suggested timeline Timeline Week One 16 Hours Activities • Collect observational field notes and classroom documents • Conduct observations and informal conversations with small groups of students • Stay actively engaged in the classroom • Participate in read alouds, small group/center instruction or monitoring, or other activities that are appropriate for gaining experience • Develop and implement small group reading and math activities • Do NOT monitor students without co-op teacher present • Attend mid-point seminar on Thursday or Friday with University Coordinator (hour can be logged) Suggested timeline Timeline Activities Week Two • Teach one social studies/science/reading and math lesson • Use the direct instruction lesson plan for social studies/reading and an indirect plan format for the science lesson • Lesson format for math is included in the handbook • Seek guidance and feedback from co-op teacher as you prepare and implement the lessons. • Have co-op teacher complete the Lesson Feedback Form for each lesson. • Complete any leftover assignments from week one • Attend final seminar on Thursday or Friday with University Coordinator (hour can be logged) 16 Hours Required Clinical Activities Clinical Experience Checklist During your two-week immersion in the field, you will collect various forms of data to reflect upon your experience in the elementary classroom.
