What is poetry?

 Poetry is a type of writing
 Uses words
 Intense focus on expression of feelings or ideas
 Not just feelings
 Uses distinctive rhythm or style
 Sounds of words, syllables, emphasis
Key Terms

 Writer – person that wrote the poem
 Speaker – “narrator” of the poem
 Line – one line of poetry
 Stanza – “paragraph” of poem
Patterns

 Rhythm – the pattern of emphasis on the words
 Rhyme – repeated end sounds of words
 Alliteration – repeated beginning sound of word
 Consonance – repeated consonant sound in words
 Assonance – repeated vowel sound in words
Figurative Language

 Allusion

 Metaphor
 Personification
