Learning outcomes
Students will:
1. learn to create simple face expressions.
2. Students will then use their expression to create a 2-d construction paper pumpkin for
a Halloween pumpkin carving contest.

flashcards (see attached)

ELMO projector, PowerPoint about expressions
Pre-activities
Completion of the previous weeks assignment on action poses.
Activities
DAY ONE
1. Remind students of their hard work creating action poses, and explain that they will
now be learning to create face expressions. Explain that to learn about face expressions,
students will be learning about Jack O’ Lanterns.
2. Show PowerPoint about Jack O’ Lanterns.
3.Lead discussion about how features (eyes, eyebrows, eyelids, and cheek/mouth area)
change as expression changes
4. Handout Jack O’ Lantern expression cards. Have students draw the expressions they
see on their card for practice.
5. Encourage students to create large drawings of pumpkins to fill the page to
exaggerate the emotion chosen.
6. Students will print their first and last name and teacher’s initial on back of paper.
Students will leave their paper in their table folder for next class.
DAY TWO
1. Briefly review the lesson from the previous class and review their sketches.
2. Have students select one of their Jack O’ Lantern faces to create on construction
paper.
3. Have students design their pumpkins using orange and black construction paper.
4. Students will print their names and leave Jack O’ Lanterns to be entered in to art
competition.
