Menu – FOR FINAL PROJECT for Mrs. Ratcliffe’s The Outsiders presentation.
You will choose on. It may be modified with teacher approval. See the rubric as to
expectations. This work will be completed in the computer lab, so put your thinking cap
on as to how to integrate the project into a digital presentation.
1. The Outsiders is written from Ponyboy’s first person perspective. However, he is
certainly not the only character who has a major role in the book’s action. Select
another character from the novel and re-write two scenes from that person’s
perspective.
a. Prewrite- a web and/or brainstorming, or outlines (may be done as two
separate sections)
b. Rough Draft – the scenes
c. Final draft - 3 page, double space minimum- correctly used dialogue is a
must. You may add pictures and place into a power point presentation if
you wish.
d. You will need a bibliography of the resources. Remember, even pictures
taken off Google images will need to be cited. Also, be sure to reference
the book as to which pages you are transforming.
2. Create an anti-bullying/ anti-stereotyping or anti-violence public awareness
video/poster/ or PowerPoint. Focus on what the issue is, the negative effects, and
how it can be prevented or stopped. You will need to do research.
a. Prewrite- a web and/or brainstorming, or outline
b. Make references to the book, and give us statistics in today’s world.
c. You will need a bibliography of the resources. Remember, even pictures
taken off Google images will need to be cited. Also, be sure to reference
the book as to which pages you are referencing.
3. Brochure/map - Create an original map of the setting for the novel. Include all of
the important places in the novel (ex: the church at Windrixville). Next, create the
brochure to go with the map. Remember, it is the 1960’s.
a. You will need to write descriptions to go with your travel brochure to
describe the settings.
b. You will need to take a character from the book and make them the travel
tour director. You will want to write a short biography of the tour director
as part of your brochure, as well as write a description of the settings in
the voice of the tour director.
c. Turn in a separate script – which the tour guide used to take the viewer
through your map.
d. You will need a bibliography of the resources. Remember, even pictures
taken off Google images will need to be cited. Also, be sure to reference
the book as to which pages you are referencing.
4. Review the themes from The Outsiders (poverty, bullying, underage drinking, cliques
& gangs). You will write three commercials/podcasts to teach tolerance.
Tolerance is the ability or willingness to tolerate something, in particular the
existence of opinions or behavior that one does not necessarily agree with. Teaching
tolerance occurs when one sets an example for how to work with, understand,
appreciate, respect and treat other people who may be different from you in some
way. American society was founded on freedom from religious persecution and on
tolerance of differences in beliefs and cultural heritage. The differences (or diversity)
that comes from people from all over the world enrich our culture, bringing new
ideas and energy. Today, more than ever, you will interact with people of differing
ethnicities, religions, and cultures.
a. You will need a bibliography of the resources. Remember, even pictures
taken off Google images will need to be cited. Also, be sure to reference
the book as to which pages you are referencing.
5. Create a scrapbook of important characters from the book. The scrapbook
must include at least five pages. Content on each page should be straight from the
book. You may look in magazines for pictures. Each picture should have a caption
and written description telling about the picture. Be creative! No dull and boring
scrapbooks. May them lively, bright and attractive! Remember, it is the 1960’s.
a. Since a scrapbook is mainly visual, you will need to add more of a writing
element in your pages, with descriptions, quotes, biographical elements,
etc.
b. You will need a bibliography of the resources. Remember, even pictures
taken off Google images will need to be cited. Also, be sure to reference
the book as to which pages you are referencing.
6. Create a poetry presentation, based on the book. Put this into a power point
presentation. Find or write 3-4 poems for each character that really “capture” them
and one about the novel as whole and what we can learn from it.
a. You will have to defend your choices. After each character’s poetry
section, write a brief reason as to why you made your choices and include
references to the book.
b. You will need a bibliography of the resources. Remember, even pictures
taken off Google images will need to be cited. Also, be sure to reference
the book as to which pages you are referencing.
7. Create an illustrated plot line or power point sequencing ten major events from
The Outsiders. Label each part (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action,
resolution) and include references to the book.
a. You will need a bibliography of the resources. Remember, even pictures
taken off Google images will need to be cited. Also, be sure to reference
the book as to which pages you are referencing.
8. Create a matching game in power point matching vocabulary, setting, and
characters, from the book. Show your creativity and try to illustrate exposition,
rising action, climax, falling action, resolution.
a. You must have at least 20 items and include references to the book.
b. You will need a bibliography of the resources. Remember, even pictures
taken off Google images will need to be cited. Also, be sure to reference
the book as to which pages you are referencing.
9. In chapter 11, Ponyboy spends some time pondering one of Sodapop’s old
yearbooks. Create some pages from a yearbook from Ponyboy’s high school.
Be sure to include descriptions of the major characters. The writing element should
include more than that of a “regular” yearbook- so you will need to add some written
stories in your yearbook pages. You may choose to draw, as we can scan your
sketches in. Put this yearbook together as a digital presentation (Power Point, etc.).
a. Pre-write- draw/find rough sketches of your yearbook pages
b. Rough draft – all of the writing to be included in the yearbook
c. Final Copy - 4 pages minimum, full color pictures required – the writing
must be included
d. You will need a bibliography of the resources. Remember, even pictures
taken off Google images will need to be cited. Also, be sure to reference
the book as to which pages you are referencing.
10. One of the major criticisms of The Outsiders is that it contains too much
violence. Conduct research on the internet and see if you can find at least two
essays on this subject. Then, write a paper where you state whether or not you
think this criticism is fair using quotes from the novel to back yourself up.
