Characterization Project ~The Outsiders

advertisement
Objective: You will design a product to reflect one character (other than Ponyboy) from The Outsiders. You
will use your characterization chart as the basis for your project. Your project should answer the following
essential question: How do particular lines of dialogue or actions of the character in a story reveal aspects
of that character?
You have three options in creating your product:
1. Compose a “Character Analysis Essay.” Your essay should contain an introduction, body paragraph(s),
and a conclusion and should contain details from each column of your characterization chart. (See the
given “Character Analysis Structure”* for the setup of the essay.)
2. Create a Facebook “page” for your character. This “page” should reflect various aspects of the
character. You should include the following: friends, photos, likes, quotations, timeline, basic info, and
a picture. Each aspect should show a clear connection to the character. You should also include FOUR
POSTS showing actions/events from the book. Finally, the “About” section should contain a
reflection/explanation of your character. You may create a hard copy of this, or you can present the
information on a WORD document. DO NOT create an actual account on Facebook!!!
3. Illustrate your character. Your illustration should include at least three physical details and seven
personality details. Attached to your illustration should be a 2-3 sentence explanation for EACH detail
(10 explanations TOTAL) you choose to include.
*Character Analysis
 The introduction needs to contain four parts…
 Hook
 Mention author and title of work.
 Two to three sentences which discuss the character generally
 Thesis statement: Clearly respond to the essential question.
 The body should contain at least three paragraphs…
1. Physical description and how it relates to the plot
2. Round or flat character,
 with details of support
 how it relates to the plot
3. Dynamic or static character
 showing the extent of change
 with details of support showing how it relates to the plot
 The conclusion…
 Restate the character and character traits by “echoing” your original thesis statement WITHOUT
using the exact words of that thesis.
 a summary of the three main points from the body of the essay.
 a final statement that gives the reader signals that the discussion has come to an end.
(Suggestion: Overall, how important/necessary was your character to the story?)
