WL Paper 2
Biotechnology High School
An IB World School

You have three options for this paper.
Option a:Comparative study - This is
like WL 1, but with different books


Which books can I use for Option a?
WL 2
You must use one WL book
 You cannot use a WL book you already
used for WL 1
 So, you can use The Metamorphosis, The
Stranger, OR the book you did not use on
WL 1.

WL 2, Option a
 Ok,
so what am I comparing with the WL
work?
 Any one of the following:
Pride and Prejudice
Slaughterhouse-Five
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
Hamlet
The Fire Next Time
Life of Pi
Not a 2nd WL work!!!
WL 2, Option a

What if I’m sick of comparative studies?
We just did one for WL 1.

Not to worry - there are other choices.
WL 2

Creative assignment - Think IOP, but
written and only on 1 or 2 works

Which works?
WL 2, Option b

You must use 1 WL work
◦ The Metamorphosis
◦ The Stranger
◦ The one you did NOT use for WL 1
WL 2, Option b
 What if I want to use
 You can use 1 of:
a second work?
Pride and Prejudice
Slaughterhouse-Five
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
Hamlet
The Fire Next Time
Life of Pi
Not a 2nd WL work!!!
 **Keep
in mind that the assignment is
MUCH more difficult with 2 works**
WL 2, Option b

What else do I need to know about the
creative option?
◦ It’s harder to do a creative WL paper (it’s
scored on the same rubric as the others, so
you have to make sure it fits the categories).
It can also be really rewarding if you love
creative writing
◦ You need to accompany it with a Statement of
Intent to explain why your creative piece has
value. It’s a rationale.
WL 2, Option b
 What
not to do:
Characters from two works meeting in a
random place and having a discussion; ie:
Nora and Cunegonde talking about their
husbands in a supermarket
A diary entry or dramatic monologue that
only paraphrases statements from the work
**So, you must show knowledge of and
insight into the work’s literary features
WL 2, Option b

Ideas for what you can do:
◦ Develop an extra scene for something that is
mentioned but not seen in the work
◦ Turning the “story” or part of it into another
form such as dramatic monologue, poem, or
folk tale
◦ A transcription of an imaginary interview
with the author about the work in question
WL 2, Option b
Detailed study - A formal essay, analysis
of a key passage, or commentary on an
extract (Think IOC, but written)
 An essay should have an argument. It’s
like WL1 but only focuses on 1 work.
 A commentary should focus on stylistic
choices made by the author and the effect
of these choices

◦ The extract should be about 30 lines
WL 2, Option c

A key passage needs to make it clear why
the passage is key and how it relates to
the larger work as a whole. This option is
also an essay.
◦ The passage can be a paragraph, a page, or a
chapter
◦ You can actually use two key passages from
the same work - then it becomes like a
comparative paper
 No two students can use the same key passage, so this
choice may be more difficult
WL 2, Option c
If doing a commentary or a key passage
essay, you must provide the
passage/extract you are using.
 ***You may not use the same
passage/extract as someone else.***

WL 2, Option c

What work can I use?

You can only use ONE of the following:
◦ The Metamorphosis
◦ The Stranger
◦ The other WL book you did NOT use for paper
1.
WL 2, Option c
How much do these count towards my IB
grade?
 Each WL paper counts for 10%.
 Part One of the course makes up 20% of
your IB grade.

WL 1 and WL 2
What’s my word count?
 The same as WL1: 1000-1500 words

◦ No, the passage/extract does NOT count
towards that.
◦ Yes, the statement of intent (2b) DOES count
towards that.
Word Count

Don’t repeat your aspect from WL1.
◦ So, if you did symbolism for WL1, you can’t do
symbolism for WL2
◦ If you did characterization, you can’t for this.
◦ Theme, etc.
