Course Description:
The goal of the French program is to create an atmosphere in which students feel motivated to
communicate in French. Much of the instruction is given in French, and students are encouraged
to use their language skills in a number of real and simulated situations. By Grade 12, students
should already have a fairly good grasp of the French language and this course will serve to
solidify that knowledge while preparing for the final exam. In addition to acquiring new
vocabulary, students will enhance their knowledge of French grammar and will learn new tenses,
while practicing their speaking, writing, listening, and reading skills. As this is an advanced level
French course, students will be expected to use French to communicate their thoughts and ideas
in class as much as possible.
Course Aims and Objectives:
It is expected that students will:







use a range of useful vocabulary and expressions
link statements in past, present and future tenses in speaking and in writing
exchange ideas and thoughts about areas of personal interest
give reasons and information to support points of view on various issues
interact effectively in French with some spontaneity drawn from real life
negotiate meaning by using questions in French and other clarification techniques
actively review common, useful expressions and patterns to refine communication
Students will continue to develop French language proficiency in the areas of: listening,
speaking, reading and writing. Throughout the year, students will:
 Interact in meaningful ways to a variety of situations (theatrical skits)
 Analyze songs, poetry, short stories, etc.
 Compare, contrast and respond to authentic creative works from around the
Francophone world (i.e. advertisements, news articles, websites, etc.)
 Summarize acquired information in oral, visual and written forms; short
stories, interviews, posters, mind maps, etc.

Assessment:
Assessment is the systematic gathering of information about what students know, are able to do, and are
working toward. Term assessment strategies may include:
Written work:
Quizzes, assignments, projects, reading
Oral work:
Speaking and listening activities, presentations and dialogues
Personal and Social Responsibility:
Homework, promptness, class engagement, leadership
At year end the student will be given a mark with terms weighted as follows:

Students must:









Bring required materials to class: one three ring binder with loose-leaf paper,
pencil/pen, and an agenda book. A French/English dictionary is highly
recommended.
Arrive to class on time, ready and willing to learn.
Make a consistent effort to always speak French in class, participate in class in
French, use class time efficiently, and complete homework. My homework is
posted in the classroom and also on my homework site (follow “Homework” link
@ www.carsongraham.ca).
Complete assignments on time. (-10%/day late; -15%/weekend late (to a
maximum of -50%)
Respect the cleanliness of the classroom and only drink water and eat small
snacks, if needed.
Seek help when necessary. Email me at: lwilson@sd44.ca or see me after class
to set up an appointment.
Take the initiative to catch up on missed work during an excused absence and
PROMPTLY make up assignments, quizzes and tests. You must inform me of an
upcoming absence (sports event, field trip, vacation etc…) and you accept
responsibility to complete the work.
Respect the ideas and work of others by listening attentively and participating
actively and appropriately during whole class activities.
Be an active and respectful participant during group work, contribute ideas and
work, and are helpful to other members of the group. Don’t depend on others!
Concerns:
1.
If electronic devices (cellphones, etc.) are brought to class and disturb from
the learning process, they will be confiscated and returned at a later time.
The classroom is a working environment where you are encouraged to maximize
your learning.
2. Academic Integrity:
Please refer to your agenda book for the policy regarding cheating and
plagiarism. In addition to the policy as outlined in the student handbook, you are
expected to take note of the following procedures:
If a translation website or other methods of translation are used for an athome assignment, students will required to rewrite the assignment so that
they can demonstrate their own abilities.

Accents on the computer:
For both kinds of computers (PC/Mac) you can go up into the top menu and select INSERT, scroll down to
SYMBOL and select the menu on symbol that has the accents – usually called something like Normal
Text. There you can choose the letter with the appropriate accent. However, you can also use the
shortcuts as follows.
