I continue to teach courses at the local community college, adjunct, as enrollment permits. I am an ordained minister, and I serve as an assistant Pastor at my church. I am a certified life coach, and I work about 10 hours per week in my coaching business, KEM, Inc. I lost a sister to breast cancer in 2009, so my remaining four sisters and I are very close and spend as much time together as we can. One has Alzheimer's, and I manage her finances and care for her jointly with another sister. I have a HUGE extended family. My mom was one of 13 children, and I have one aunt and two uncles remaining. One is aging and ailing, and I spend time caring for him and his wife. In addition, my husband is the eldest of 13 children. He is very close to all of them. So I have a HUGE extended family that leaves me no time to feel bored or unfulfilled. I feel greatly blessed. I would tell them that their Mount Holyoke education will open many doors for them. Every door might not be the best door. Choose wisely. Life goes by really fast. I would tell them to pursue their dreams, and that the best barometers to measure success are inner peace and happiness. I try to stay in touch with (Doug's son) my nephew Sean and his wife Patricia and daughter Elsa. Then there's my second brother Bert who now lives in Maine. I spend holidays (this year it was Thanksgiving) with his family. I keep in touch with his oldest son Danny in Charleston, SC and with his oldest daughter Caitlin in Madison, NJ. Bert and his wife Marilyn have two children still living at home: Tim (freshman in high school) and Kristin (seventh grade). I live in the same town with my best friend from high school, Krystyna Koski Budd. It's great to have a least one close connection living nearby. I miss my work colleagues since retirement, but luckily for me one of them lives a few houses away across the street so I can stay in touch that way. I'm also in touch with a few other friends from high school and last year worked on a class-sponsored scholarship committee with them. How I spend my waking hours (work, volunteering, hobbies, etc.): Nothing too exciting to report here. Due to back troubles, I need to do some stretching exercises almost every day upon getting out of bed (some of it in bed, actually). Twice a week at least I go to the gym to improve my fitness. This year I'm going to try for three times a week. Besides an occasional classical music concert with my friend Krys, I have only one regular outside activity: I belong to the Fanwood "Hook and Needle Club", a group of mostly women--we do have one man--that meets weekly in the local library to work on knitting and crocheting projects. Some of these projects are personal, but many of them are for donation. We have made baby hats, sweaters and blankets; hats for veterans; lap-ghans (small afghans) for wheelchair patients at local hospitals, and a variety of scarves. I can't name all of the groups we have given to or even come up with the number of items donated, but with at least twenty of us, I can say that the donations were numerous. I spend some time on household maintenance, fixing up the house. Now I am thinking about possible renovations--to enjoy while I am here and to prepare the house for eventual sale. I have hopes of planning some travel with Krys, now that we are both retired and her children are almost independent. I get regular emails from Road Scholar about educational trips, and I imagine that's what we'll go for when we're ready. In summer, when in Maine, I also go to a similar craft group that meets in the local library. Up there I have some small yard work and cottage maintenance tasks, too. Hope to cross paths with Susan Ellis when she's in New Hampshire and I am in Maine--next summer. Oh! And this year I have spent a good deal of time trying to plan this upcoming 45th reunion. I've enjoyed having the contacts with classmates and with the staff of the Alumnae Associ ation. One way to keep from feeling too isolated. I hope to renew my MHC connections in May and carry on with them in future. I can't imagine that I could have much to say to any eager young graduates--and I dislike public speaking--so I'll have to pass on this option. I tried to upload a photo below but my photos are all at least 3 MB. So I'll just say that I go to Center Lovell, Maine in the summer. It's only about 10 or 15 miles to the New Hampshire border. The family cottage is on Kezar Lake. We're on the east side and have a spectacular western view of the White Mountains and of the sun setting behind the mountains on clear days. Last summer I discovered a wonderful place in Maine--the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. I recommend it to anyone who can get to the Boothbay area. If anyone is thinking of visiting Maine or already lives in Maine and wants to get in touch, I would love it. Just email me before July at khkendall@Comcast.net and we can plan to meet. We are a very close family and regularly spend together a significant amount of time. Our older son lives in Brookline, MA, where we have our primary home; our younger son and his family reside in NH less than a mile from our other house. We enjoy frequent family dinners and gatherings in both locations, and love to vacation together in interesting spots. We are very active and take pleasure in hiking, cross-country skiing, and water sports with our family. I also consider my old and dear friends a part of my inner circle. I take great pride and pleasure in maintaining friendships formed as a young girl and in college. These close friends and confidants become increasingly important to me as I age. How I spend my waking hours (work, volunteering, hobbies, etc.): In December 2007, I retired from thirty-five years in public education, mostly as Elementary Mathematics Coordinator in the Brookline Public Schools. By that time, I was no longer raising two sons, one of whom was a two-time Olympian, and the other who had special needs. I was able to immerse myself in many activities that I could not attempt before that time. My husband and I had always done extensive travel, but starting in 2008 we added some even more exotic adventures. We boarded an expedition ship for a month-long journey to Antarctica, South Georgia, and the Falkland Islands. We spent a week in Denali National Park at the end of the ninety-mile road into the park. We explored Tasmania, and culminated that trip on a party boat in Sydney Harbor where we witnessed a spectacular fireworks display to ring in the new year. Next year, we are off to Patago nia for what we hope will be another memorable vacation. In 2008, I became a master gardener, and eventually served a two-year stint as the Education Coordinator for the Massachusetts Master Gardener Association and as a member of the MMGA Board of Directors. I joined a book group comprised of Brookline teachers and librarians, and began to participate in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Brandeis University. In my NH community, I train and lead a group of twenty weed watchers who monitor our lake and small ponds for potential invasive species; as of now we are grateful that we have no invasives in our water bodies. Since the birth of my first grandchild, I have devoted a full day a week to babysitting for the grandchildren. I love that I know my three grandchildren so intimately, and that I keep involved in their daily activities. They are truly a special joy. And the increasing joy of mentoring younger - now much younger! - colleagues. I supervise three young Chinese women, for whom my husband and I are the "modern" parents they don't have. My work relationships, which cross cultural and generational divides, continue to enrich my life in unexpected ways. How I spend my waking hours (work, volunteering, hobbies, etc.): In 1970 just after graduation I joined the Peace Corps and went to live in a small farming village in South Korea, where I worked on a rural community development project. After a reasonably successful career as a college professor, and another ten years in international education, my life has now come full circle. In 2010, I took a job with the Quaker-affiliated American Friends Service Committee, and my husband and I moved to China, from which I manage AFSC's agricultural development assistance program in North Korea. The chance at my age to be back working at the grass roots level, mucking about in rice paddies on the other side of the DMZ, is an enormous challenge and an unexpected blessing. I travel alot - to North Korea, and around China organizing study tours and exchanges for North Korean partners, to Southeast Asia for business and pleasure, and to the US to do advocacy work and visit family and friends. I run an office in China and manage a program... actually, I'm rather obsessive about my job and pretty much all I do is work. My husband, on the other hand, is very happily retired from college teaching and does all the cooking, laundry, cleaning, and household management. We both think we have the better part of the bargain. I'm also visiting my mother once or twice a week in the assisted living facility to which she chose to move after she was flooded out of her home in October 2012 by Superstorm Sandy. Alternatively, feel free to use this form to comment to the Class in any way you wish, including uploads (see below) of art, photos, poetry, etc. Please don’t leave a blank! I was president of my class of 1970 because i could never have accomplished all i have had the opportunity to do in my life without my four years at MHC. I feel it was an education and exercise in building self- esteem to graduate from MHC. My Washington DC internship opened many doors for me in Law which ended up combining my interests in both art and law for the rest of my life. i feel you have to be grateful for everything that comes your way, and MHC has been a part of the life of 5 in my family.
