How I spend my waking hours (work, volunteering, hobbies, etc.): I have a volunteer job as Director of our local town Food Pantry. Depending on the season, this can take anywhere from 8 - 30 hours/week. I am retiring this June from my part-time job as Music Director and Organist of a small Episcopal church in my community, a position I will have held for 41 years! This retirement brings mixed emotions, since so many people important to my life are members of this church community. My hope is that the time freed up with this retirement can be spent reading the many books I've wanted to read and never had/made time for. I spend up to a couple of hours a day reading the Boston Globe (print edition!) newspaper because I am fascinated with keeping up with all that's going on nationally and internationally. Tim and I have been able travel some each year, including a near-annual trip to Sweden where he has sons and 4 grandchildren. I think I would tell new graduates to truly appreciate having had the opportunity to get a true liberal arts education. Many young people now don't have the luxury of being able to spend 4 years exploring mind-expanding fields they knew little about that may not prepare them for a career that can enable them to pay off their mountains of debt. While enjoying my music major, which I have used since graduation, I equally loved the opportunity to explore religion, history, psychology and sociology courses and to start a new language. The college's willingness to waive normal graduation requirements for our class of 1970 due to events at Kent State College that spring enabled me to begin getting involved in what has led to a lifelong interest and involvement with social justice, peace, and political issues. I had these opportunities because my parents were able to afford my education, and I graduated with no debt. ( Of course, my father wanted me to go to Katy Gibbs after gradation and offered to pay for it. I chose musicology to pursue, which I paid for, although I didn't end up continuing with that.) From my perception, Mount Holyoke is allowing students to keep their feet in both worlds, by continuing to encourage a breadth as well as depth of studies and experiences while recognizing the reality of today's economy. One excellent example is the goal of offering to pay for an internship for every student, along with other programs designed to prepare every student for productive and successful lives after graduation. I would encourage graduates to cherish each moment of life, no matter how small. It is good to have that college degree and a good job, but these should not define you as a person. Keep a positive outlook, even in the face of adversity. Accept life's challenges as a part of learning -- we should always be learning and growing as a person. We learn a lot from problem solving. Keep a smile close by. Extend kindness to others, be a good listener, and don't be in such a hurry. Most important in life are your family, your friends, and savoring the in-between moments of life. As solid as your MHC education is, it's valuable to have a graduate degree. You won't necessarily earn more, but you will have a better chance of excelling in your chosen profession or field, and you will gain added depth. I use both my MHC and graduate knowledge every day. However, I recommend working for several years before entering a graduate program - first to find a field of real interest to you; and second, to bring maturity to the experience. Don't let your professional life overshadow your personal life. As you reach your 50s and beyond, your family and social lif should become as important as your profession. Sacrifices are part of advancement, but beware of foregoing your personal happiness. Control your own time, to the extent you can. Remember that, in most professional settings, you're not irreplaceable. You should be (highly) valued but not fearful of losing a job if you don't devote yourself to it 24/7. With your education and outlook, you will always have choices. The horrors we are witnessing now will destroy civilization as we know it. I would like to be more connected. Our world needs all the informed, intelligent, caring women it can get. And I would like to be more in touch with women who shared a common experience--that I feel bonded with. As we aged, my husband and I assumed that we would stay "whole" well into our 70's, that we had time to do all the things that were still on our bucket lists. Life delivered some crippling blows over the last two years. My husband had some 15 surgeries. I became a fierce hospital advocate and used all my college and business skills to stay on top of a mountain of details. Here are some take-away lessons. First, you cannot survive this sort of tsunami without family and friends. The burden is just too staggering. So I did call in people, including one of my MHC roommates who dropped everything and came. a great and kind gift. Second, don't wait to live life. Grab it while you can. Third, appreciate what you do have. I came close to losing my husband last year. He is now compromised, but he still has all his marbles and we can talk to each other. Instead of focusing on what we have lost, I focus on what I still have. A battle won.
